Bayerische Motoren Werke has partnered with HEVO Inc. and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop wireless charging technology for electric and autonomous vehicles. The collaboration will assess a next generation polyphase coil system, with Oak Ridge National Laboratory providing research capabilities and HEVO contributing its wireless charging platform to BMW's vehicle focused testing. Bayerische Motoren Werke, a €34.8b auto manufacturer of cars, motorcycles, parts and accessories, is using the work to explore how its broader vehicle line up might connect with future infrastructure for electric and autonomous transport. The effort backs BMW's long term EV and autonomous platform roadmap rather than near term model cycles, though it sits against existing flags on debt coverage and a dividend not well supported by free cash flow. The key test will be whether BMW sets measurable targets for wireless charging integration in its EV line up at the Berenberg and Goldman Sachs German Corporate Conference this week.
