Columbia Banking System Q2 revenue misses estimates, shares fall

Columbia Banking System reported second-quarter revenue of $683 million, missing analyst estimates of $688.3 million and triggering a negative market reaction. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.76 beat the $0.73 consensus. CEO Clint Stein attributed the top-line shortfall to disciplined lending, saying the bank will not meet irrational market pricing and structures. Elevated commercial real estate payoffs and intentional runoff in transactional loans led to a net decline in total loans. Management expects net interest margin to exceed 4% in upcoming quarters and targets mid-single-digit annual growth in fee income.
