UK M&A value on track for record £347 billion in 2026 as corporate buyers dominate

UK M&A value is tracking to a record high in 2026, reaching £178.9 billion in the year to July 7 and putting the market on pace for an annualized total of around £347 billion, which would eclipse the prior high of £309.2 billion set in 2015, according to PitchBook data. The top 10 deals accounted for roughly 52% of overall M&A value, with eight of those 10 largest transactions struck by strategic acquirers in the first six months, led by McCormick's $44.8 billion merger with Unilever's food business in March. Sponsor acquisitions made up just 33.1% of overall UK deal value in the first half of the year, the second-lowest share since 2014, and PE accounted for only 15.1% of the value of the 10 largest deals, as firms like EQT took Intertek private for £10.9 billion and TDR Capital acquired Escode for £3.09 billion. The gap stems from financing, as roughly two-thirds of McCormick's Unilever Foods combination was funded in stock, a currency PE funds cannot offer, while corporate acquirers rely on balance-sheet cash and equity to pursue scale that would once have drawn sponsor competition.
MKC · Capital · Positive McCormick's $44.8 billion merger with Unilever's food business is a major strategic acquisition, likely to boost scale and market position.
UNLYD · Capital · Positive Unilever is selling its food business for $44.8 billion, a large divestiture that could unlock value and streamline operations.
ITRK.LSE · Capital · Negative Intertek is being taken private by EQT for £10.9 billion, meaning public shareholders will be cashed out at a premium, but the company ceases to be publicly traded.
Escode · Capital · Negative Escode is being acquired by TDR Capital for £3.09 billion, resulting in delisting for public shareholders.

European M&A value falls just 6.4% in Q2, far outpacing North America's 24.3% drop

European M&A value fell 6.4% quarter-over-quarter in the second quarter to $344 billion, a much shallower decline than the 24.3% drop recorded in North America, according to PitchBook's Q2 2026 Global M&A Report. Deal count in Europe rose 0.9% to 5,061, even as it fell an estimated 7.3% in North America. The region's resilience has been building for a year, with sponsors and corporate acquirers drawn by lower entry multiples and untapped family-owned businesses. B2B was Europe's strongest sector, with deal value up 35.6% to $129 billion, driven by two megadeals: Kone, Advent International, and Cinven's $34.3 billion purchase of TK Elevator, and EQT's $14.6 billion take-private of Intertek at a 62% premium. The European Central Bank became the first G7 central bank to raise rates in June, responding to an energy shock tied to Middle East conflict, and the region's resilience through year-end will depend on how monetary policy and geopolitical uncertainty evolve.
0II2.LSE · Capital · Positive Kone is part of a consortium acquiring TK Elevator in a $34.3B megadeal, boosting M&A activity and deal value.
ITRK.LSE · Capital · Positive Intertek is being taken private by EQT at a 62% premium, a clear positive for shareholders.
Advent International · Capital · Positive Advent International is a buyer in the TK Elevator acquisition, reflecting active deal-making.
Cinven · Capital · Positive Cinven is part of the consortium acquiring TK Elevator, indicating strong deal activity.
TK Elevator Holding GmbH · Capital · Positive TK Elevator is being acquired for $34.3B, a significant M&A transaction.
