US Dollar/Russian Rouble FX Spot Rate

USD/RUB is the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Russian rouble. The rouble is a classic petrocurrency, with its value closely tied to the oil and gas export revenues that dominate Russia's economy. Beyond crude prices, the rouble carries a significant geopolitical and sanctions premium, and can gap sharply on conflict, capital controls, and central-bank intervention, making it one of the more volatile emerging-market currencies.

Commerzbank Expects Russian Central Bank to Hold Key Rate at 14.0%

Commerzbank analyst Tatha Ghose expects the Russian central bank to keep its key rate at 14.0%, arguing that inflation fundamentals do not justify further easing despite weak growth. The call points to a pause rather than a cut at the upcoming decision, with building inflation risks cited as the reason the CBR is unlikely to loosen policy. Ghose's view rests on the gap between subdued growth and still-uncomfortable price pressures, which he says leaves no room for additional easing. The forecast keeps the focus on the central bank's next rate announcement and whether it holds at 14.0% as Commerzbank anticipates.
USDRUB.FOREX · Monetary · Negative Commerzbank expects the Russian central bank to hold its key rate at 14.0%, signaling no further easing and supporting the rouble.
CBK.XETRA · Capital · Neutral Commerzbank analyst Tatha Ghose's forecast of a CBR rate hold is the subject of the article, but it carries no clear positive or negative implication for Commerzbank itself.

Russia's central bank set to hold rates at 14% as inflation climbs to 6.3%

Russia's central bank will decide at Friday's meeting whether to pause its rate-cutting cycle, with the choice likely coming down to holding the policy rate at 14% or trimming it by a modest 0.25% to 13.75%, amid rising inflation risks from fuel supply problems and accelerating government spending. Russia's annual inflation has picked up again to 6.3% after increased attacks on oil refineries, which have worsened fuel shortages and pushed up gasoline prices. Alexei Zabotkin, deputy governor of the Russian central bank, said fuel-related effects have added roughly 1.5 percentage points to price growth, and the central bank will not have new forecasts until October. President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, said the high policy rate is a deliberate and necessary decision to preserve macroeconomic stability, in contrast to July, when he twice signalled that rates should be lower. Most economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect the Russian central bank to hold rates at this meeting, with only 3 of 11 expecting a 0.25% cut to 13.75%. Herman Gref, chief executive of Sberbank, said the central bank may take a tactical pause while it assesses the situation, but could still cut rates to 13-13.5% by the end of the year, and that the economy will only begin to see meaningful easing once rates fall to 10-12%.
RU-10Y.GB · Monetary · Negative Bank expected to hold the policy rate at 14% rather than cut, keeping yields elevated and bond prices under pressure.
USDRUB.FOREX · Monetary · Negative Central bank set to hold rates at 14% with inflation at 6.3%, keeping the rouble supported by high yields.
Sberbank of Russia · Monetary · Neutral Sberbank CEO Gref comments on a possible tactical pause and year-end cuts to 13-13.5%, a mixed signal for the bank.

Russians withdraw 3.4 billion dollars in two weeks

Russians rushed to withdraw cash from domestic banks worth nearly 286.4 billion rubles, or 3.4 billion US dollars, during the first two weeks of August, amid concerns that the government may seize citizens' deposits to fund the war in Ukraine. The Washington Post reported, citing data from the Russian central bank, that the figure follows withdrawals of as much as 7.3 billion US dollars in July and more than 4.5 billion US dollars in June. Alexandra Prokopenko, a former adviser to the Russian central bank, said the large-scale cash withdrawals further underscore the level of fear among the Russian public and reflect that people have lost confidence in Russia's banking or financial system.
USDRUB.FOREX · Monetary · Positive Russians withdrawing rubles for dollars/cash signals ruble weakness and loss of confidence in the banking system, strengthening USD vs RUB.
