Q2 2026

Costco's strong sales and membership growth face high valuation and slowing traffic

  • Strong Q3 earnings and sales growth Costco reported a 15% jump in net income to $2.19 billion and net sales up 11.6% to $69.15 billion. Comparable sales grew 9.8%, and membership fee income rose 10.7%. This shows the core business is thriving, which supports the stock price.

This is the latest earnings report, a key driver of the stock's fundamental value.

  • Resilient sales despite Fed holding rates The Fed kept interest rates steady at 3.5%-3.75%, with inflation still high. Costco's May comparable sales jumped 12.5%, showing it can attract shoppers even when rates are high. This resilience makes the stock appealing in uncertain times.

It highlights Costco's ability to perform well regardless of monetary policy, a key concern for investors.

  • Slowing warehouse traffic growth Worldwide warehouse traffic grew only 2.4% in the latest quarter, a slowdown that challenges the idea that frequent visits will keep driving sales. If traffic growth stays weak, investors may worry about future comparable sales and the stock's high valuation.

This is a new negative development that could pressure the stock if the trend continues.

  • High valuation and analyst caution Costco stock trades near $1,000 with a P/E around 47, which is expensive. Analysts see 16% upside on average, but some warn of a pullback to the low $900s. The high price means the stock is vulnerable if growth slows.

Valuation is a major factor in whether the stock can rise further or is due for a correction.

Costco's Q4 Beat, Delivery Expansion, and Ancillary Strength Drive Optimism

  • Q4 Earnings Beat and Full-Year Sales Near $300B Costco reported fiscal Q4 net sales up 12% to $95.72 billion, beating estimates, with EPS up 15% to $6.57. Full-year sales reached $297.2 billion. This confirms shoppers are still spending at Costco, supporting the stock price.

This is the core financial result that reassures investors about Costco's growth and profitability.

  • Uber Eats and DoorDash Delivery Expansion Costco expanded Uber Eats delivery from 17 to 47 states, covering nearly 600 warehouses, and launched nationwide on DoorDash. This makes Costco products available to more customers who want home delivery, boosting sales and membership appeal.

This shows Costco is aggressively growing its digital and delivery footprint, a key driver of future sales.

  • Strong Ancillary Businesses: Gas, Pharmacy, Travel Costco's ancillary businesses delivered strong Q4 results: record gasoline volumes, nearly 20% pharmacy sales growth, and double-digit travel growth. This diversification adds steady profit and offsets weakness in other areas.

These ancillary segments are increasingly important profit drivers and show Costco's ability to grow beyond groceries.

  • Analysts Split on Valuation Despite Strong Results Analysts are divided: some see more upside with targets up to $1,100, while others warn of slowing traffic and membership growth, with a Sell rating and $781 target. This creates uncertainty about how much growth is already priced in.

This highlights the key debate that could cap stock gains or cause volatility, giving a balanced view.

Costco grows sales and expands, but faces margin and regulatory pressures

  • Sales near $300B and expansion plans Costco's sales approached $300 billion with 10.2% growth, and digital and delivery expanded to 47 states. Market share gains led to a $7.5 billion plan for 33 new warehouses.

This shows the core business is still growing strongly, which supports the stock price.

  • New ventures in healthcare and China Costco entered Medicare through SCAN Health Plan and advanced in China with JD.com, while pursuing green logistics. These moves open new revenue streams and show strategic innovation.

These new business lines could drive future growth and diversify revenue.

  • Slowing comparable sales and membership growth Comparable sales slowed and membership fee growth decelerated to 7.3%, raising concerns about future revenue. A grocery price war loomed, threatening margins.

Slowing key metrics and competitive pressures could hurt profitability and investor confidence.

  • Regulatory probe and margin pressures The DOJ expanded a beef-price probe to Costco, and inflation squeezed electronics margins. Kirkland oil price hikes hurt its low-price reputation, while Fed rate caution and retail selloffs added volatility.

These issues create legal, reputational, and financial risks that could weigh on the stock.

Costco Fiscal 2026 Revenue Reaches $276.4 Billion, Up 8.1%

Costco Wholesale Corporation closed fiscal 2026 with total revenue of $276.4 billion, up 8.1% year over year, as the warehouse retailer reported net sales of $93.87 billion, up 11.2%, and net income of $2.998 billion in its September 24 earnings call. Membership remains the engine of the business, with 84.1 million paid members, including 42.3 million Executive tier members, a group that grew 9.4% and pushed that tier's share of the base to a new high, while renewal rates rose to 92.3% in the US and Canada and 89.8% worldwide. Membership fee income climbed 7.3% to $1.849 billion, and management plans 33 openings in fiscal 2027 as it works toward 30 net new warehouses a year, with digitally enabled sales topping $33 billion on growth above 20%. The quarter was not spotless, as reported gross margin slipped to 11.02% from 11.13% a year earlier and the LIFO charge jumped to $152 million from $43 million, tied to pricier memory in electronics and Middle East conflict costs for gas, motor oil, and resins, while tariff refunds added $0.15 per share and the $184 million received covers only about a third of the expected recovery. With the stock trading near historical valuation highs at a forward P/E of 40.32 and hedge fund ownership slipping to 104 funds from 107, the debate now centers on whether membership loyalty and the expansion plan can keep earnings growing into a premium that leaves little room for a stumble.
COST · Capital · Positive Fiscal 2026 revenue rose 8.1% to $276.4B with net sales up 11.2% and net income of $2.998B, though gross margin slipped to 11.02%.
COST · Demand · Positive Paid members grew to 84.1M with Executive tier up 9.4%, renewal rates at 92.3% US/Canada, and digitally enabled sales topping $33B on 20%+ growth.

UBS Flags Six U.S. Hardlines Retailers as AI Shopping Agents Reshape Retail

UBS has identified the leading U.S. hardlines retail stocks as the industry confronts the emergence of AI-powered shopping agents, which the firm calls one of the most consequential developments in retail since the rise of e-commerce. The analysis examines how retailers with scale, fulfillment capabilities, and genuine differentiation may navigate the shift as AI agents increasingly intermediate commerce between consumers and merchants. UBS says the most immediate downside risk to revenue remains low, but the larger risk may emerge in profit pools rather than top-line sales, particularly as AI agents potentially bypass sponsored search results and retail media advertisements. The six names on the list are Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Kroger. Walmart is cited for a balanced strategy that embraces partnerships with external AI platforms while investing in its own capabilities, with the challenge centering on protecting high-margin advertising businesses and ecosystem economics rather than preserving sales growth. Costco benefits from scale, pricing power, and a differentiated membership model, while Home Depot and Lowe's retain defensive advantages through installation services, technical expertise, and project guidance, and Kroger operates in grocery, where repetitive shopping is conducive to automation but fresh food selection and immediate consumption needs continue to anchor consumers in physical stores.
COST · Competition · Positive UBS cites Costco's scale, pricing power, and differentiated membership model as advantages as AI shopping agents reshape retail.
HD · Competition · Positive UBS says Home Depot retains defensive advantages via installation services, technical expertise, and project guidance amid the AI-agent shift.
LOW · Competition · Positive UBS says Lowe's retains defensive advantages through installation services, technical expertise, and project guidance as AI agents reshape retail.
WMT · Competition · Neutral UBS cites Walmart's balanced AI-agent strategy but warns of risk to its high-margin advertising and ecosystem economics as AI agents may bypass sponsored search.
KR · Competition · Neutral UBS notes Kroger's grocery niche suits automation but fresh-food and immediate-consumption needs keep consumers in stores, a mixed read.
TGT · Competition · Neutral Target is named on UBS's list of six hardlines retailers facing the AI shopping-agent shift, but no specific advantage or risk is detailed.

Costco Wholesale reported fourth-quarter sales of US$93,873 million and full-year sales of US$297,247 million in late September 2026, with both revenue and net income rising compared with the prior year. The company also launched nationwide on the DoorDash Marketplace, broadening same-day delivery access to all U.S. warehouses as part of its digital and omnichannel push. Costco's narrative projects US$363.2 billion in revenue and US$11.6 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 7.4% yearly revenue growth and a US$2.8 billion earnings increase from US$8.8 billion today. Costco Membership Fee Revenue Rises 11% to $5.907 Billion in Fiscal 2026

Costco Wholesale Corporation reported fiscal 2026 membership-fee revenue of $5.907 billion, up from $5.323 billion, an increase of $584 million or approximately 11%. The company ended the year with 84.1 million paid memberships, up 3.8%, including 42.3 million Executive memberships, which accounted for 75.6% of fourth-quarter sales; renewal rates were 92.3% in the United States and Canada and 89.8% worldwide. Annual net sales rose 10.1% to $297.2 billion, while operating income increased approximately 12.5% to $11.685 billion, and fourth-quarter earnings benefited by $0.15 per diluted share from International Emergency Economic Powers Act tariff refunds after partial reinvestment in member value. Costco's Executive program generally offers a 2% reward on qualifying purchases subject to an annual limit, and rewards reduce sales after allowing for estimated nonredemptions, a reduction that totaled $3.007 billion in fiscal 2025. Accrued member rewards stood at $3.037 billion at fiscal year-end versus $2.677 billion a year earlier, but the results release does not disclose the fiscal 2026 rewards reduction, so investors cannot directly compare incremental fee revenue with incremental reward costs.
COST · Capital · Positive Membership-fee revenue rose 11% to $5.907B, net sales up 10.1%, and operating income up ~12.5%, with Q4 EPS boosted $0.15 by tariff refunds.

Costco reinvests $184 million in tariff refunds into price cuts

Costco received $184 million in tariff refunds during its fiscal fourth quarter and has reinvested about half of that into lower prices on certain high-volume items, Mizuho Americas Director and Senior Analyst David Bellinger said on Market Domination. Costco is due for another $300 million plus in tariff refunds, which Bellinger expects will largely flow back into the membership experience through low prices and rewards. The warehouse retailer posted US same-store sales growth of about 7% and membership growth of just under 4%, a deceleration from the 7% to 8% heights of a few years ago, while earnings growth came in slightly above the published Street number. Bellinger said the in-line quarter should be rewarded even at a big valuation, given signs of a strained consumer, including AutoZone's earlier results and McDonald's reporting negative same-store sales growth in August. More than nine out of 10 members renew their Costco memberships, a rate that has picked up slightly over each of the past few quarters.
COST · Demand · Positive US same-store sales grew about 7% and membership growth just under 4%, with over 90% renewal rates.
COST · Pricing · Positive Costco reinvests $184M in tariff refunds into lower prices on high-volume items, with $300M+ more expected, supporting membership value.

Microsoft Unveils Unified Copilot With Autopilot Mode as Nadella Warns on AI Subsidies

Microsoft has launched a new version of its Copilot AI assistant that merges the consumer and workplace products into a single offering aimed at corporate customers, with three modes — chat, code, and autopilot — and roughly 30 million customers so far, CEO Satya Nadella told Yahoo Finance's Deirdre Bosa in an interview. Nadella said the autopilot mode, which connects to a user's apps, email and workflows and acts as a personal assistant, represents the next generation of enterprise automation and will roll out in the coming weeks, though he cautioned that token costs mean "once the subsidies stop for everybody" the business model must be justified by customer return on investment. On China, Nadella said it is in both countries' interests to agree on norms, including a direct notification channel between presidents in the event of a cybersecurity attack, following this week's Trump-Xi summit. Separately, Costco reported quarterly profit above Wall Street estimates with earnings per share of 695 cents, including 15 cents from $184 million in tariff refunds, while comparable sales rose 6.7%. Akamai announced a $12 billion computing deal with Anthropic, building on a $1.8 billion agreement earlier in the year, with warrants giving Anthropic the right to buy Series B shares at $113.33 each that convert into 7.7 million common shares. Tesla confirmed high-volume production of its Semi had begun at its Sparks, Nevada factory and announced a 2,500-truck order from a coalition of shipping companies including PepsiCo, which Fast Company called the largest US order for electric heavy-duty trucks.

Akamai Soars on $11.6 Billion Anthropic Deal; Costco Beats

Akamai Technologies shares soared after the cloud provider inked a seven-year $11.6 billion deal to provide computing power to Anthropic. Analysts said the contract, which is entirely focused on CPUs, should boost Akamai's growth and offers an attractive profitability profile, with TD Cowen noting that as long as industry-wide computer shortages remain, Akamai should be able to win more cloud infrastructure contracts. People shares jumped on a report that MGM Resorts is discussing making a bid to purchase the Barry Diller-owned media giant, in which People owns about a 27% stake. Costco Wholesale's quarterly profits surpassed Wall Street's estimates after the company recorded a benefit of nearly $200 million related to tariff refunds, though the stock was down about 1% as analysts noted it trades at roughly 40 times forward earnings. Swedish pharma company Nanexa rose 50% after Novo Nordisk, which makes Ozempic, agreed to pay up to 1.3 billion to license and develop Nanexa's drug delivery technology.

Costco Warns AI Memory Chip Inflation Is Squeezing Electronics Prices

Costco is absorbing low single-digit inflation across its merchandising categories, with the sharpest pressure coming from memory costs on consumer electronics tied to the AI boom. On the company's earnings call late Thursday, CFO Gary Millerchip said the increase was concentrated in non-foods, driven largely by memory costs on consumer electronics and oil-related items. Those pressured consumer electronics margins dragged Costco's gross profit margin down to 11.01% in the fiscal fourth quarter from 11.12% a year earlier. The memory chip market has tightened as demand for high-bandwidth memory and advanced dynamic random-access memory used in AI servers outpaces supply, and suppliers including SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and Micron have largely sold out their premium AI memory capacity through much of 2026 as customers such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta race to build AI infrastructure. Experts expect memory supply to remain constrained into 2027, a favorable backdrop for the industry's largest producers such as Micron and Sandisk. Costco still posted a solid quarter, with total sales up 11.1% from the prior year to $95.72 billion, total comparable store sales up 9.4% and online sales up 19.5%, and Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe said the company remains one of retail's highest quality long-term compounders.

Costco Tops Q4 Estimates as Tariff Refunds Add 15 Cents to EPS

Costco Wholesale topped fiscal fourth quarter earnings estimates, with quarterly profit beating Wall Street expectations as EPS came in at 695, though tariff refunds from the Trump administration added 15 cents to EPS, or $184 million. Same store sales rose 6.7%, better than expected, with strength in gas, travel, home furniture, small electronics and beauty. In fiscal year 2026, penetration of US member households that purchased gas hit a record high, and Costco said it saved members $3.2 billion versus the average price at the pump in markets where it operates. Executives on the call flagged two pressures on gross margin: higher memory costs in consumer appliances and electronics, and inflation in gas, motor oil and resin tied to the conflict in the Middle East.

Trump and Xi Meet as Oil Climbs and Bond Yields Hit Two-Decade Highs

President Trump welcomed China's President Xi to the White House today for a summit expected to cover the 18-month tariff war, oil supply security amid the seven-month Iran war, and the promise and threat of AI. Oil prices are climbing again, with WTI at $93 per barrel and Brent crude at $105 per barrel, levels last seen in the early weeks of U.S. and Israeli bomb strikes on Iran in mid-March. Bond yields remain at their highest level in two decades, with the 10-year at +5.12% and the 2-year around +4.86%, a strain the Fed will be forced to weigh at its October FOMC meeting. Weekly Jobless Claims stayed near six-decade lows at +197K initial claims, with continuing claims dropping to 1.719 million. Ahead of the open, Darden Restaurants reported fiscal Q1 earnings of $2.05 per share, missing by a penny, on $3.2 billion in revenues, short of the Zacks consensus by -0.14%, with comps up +3.1% year over year; shares fell -3% premarket. After today's close, Costco is expected to report fiscal Q4 earnings of $6.48 per share on $94.82 billion in revenues, both up over +10% year over year.

Costco Wholesale Corporation is set to report fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings on Sept. 24 after the market closes, with the Zacks Consensus Estimate projecting revenues of $94.82 billion, a 10.1% increase from the prior-year reported figure, and earnings of $6.48 per share, up 10.4% year over year though the estimate has fallen by 3 cents over the past 30 days. The company has a Zacks Rank #3 and an Earnings ESP of -0.19%, a combination that does not conclusively predict an earnings beat. In its August sales report, Costco said net sales rose 11.3% year over year to $93.9 billion for the 16-week fourth quarter, with comparable sales up 9.4% companywide, including a 10.7% gain in the United States and increases of 5% in Canada and 7% in Other International, while digitally enabled comparable sales climbed 19.5%. Costco shares have risen 4.3% year to date, roughly in line with the industry's 4.4% gain, and the stock trades at a forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 39.75, above the industry average of 27.04 and the S&P 500's 20.06 but below its own median P/E of 45.28 over the past year. The company faces margin pressure from higher input and component costs and tariff-related uncertainty, and its premium valuation alongside the lack of a clear earnings-beat signal suggests a measured approach ahead of the release.

Jim Cramer Flags Costco Membership Woes Ahead of Quarterly Earnings

Jim Cramer said Costco Wholesale Corporation's stock is "acting poorly" ahead of the retailer's quarterly earnings report, warning that the company is having trouble getting younger shoppers to renew their memberships because they prefer shopping online. Costco reported August net sales of $23.7 billion, up 9.9% from $21.56 billion a year earlier, while preliminary net sales for the 16-week fourth quarter ended August 30, 2026 reached almost $94 billion, an 11.3% gain over last year. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, the company posted GAAP net sales of $69.15 billion and diluted earnings per share of $4.93, with worldwide paid memberships at 82.9 million and a 92.2% renewal rate across the United States and Canada. Despite that momentum, Costco missed consensus EPS by a single cent in the May quarter, $4.93 versus $4.94 expected, a warning sign for a stock trading at a trailing P/E ratio above 45x. According to Insider Monkey, 104 hedge funds held positions in Costco at the close of the second quarter, down slightly from 107 in the prior quarter, while short interest stands at 1.71% of the public float.

Costco Expands DoorDash and Uber Delivery Deals, Stays Out of Arms Race

Costco Wholesale announced a new partnership with DoorDash and a major extension of its relationship with Uber, vastly expanding its same-day delivery reach while still leaving it well behind rivals like Walmart and Amazon. The membership-based retailer's same-day delivery had until now consisted largely of teaming up with Instacart for very quick delivery of groceries and other essentials, while Costco typically handles two-day shipping itself. Costco's hold on its customers remains strong: 92.3% of members in the U.S. and Canada renewed last year, and net sales for the fiscal year ended in August hit $297.3 billion, nearly triple what they were a decade ago. Its e-commerce business is growing faster than store sales, with digitally-enabled sales up 20.9% in the recently ended fiscal year against a companywide comparable sales uptick of 8.4%. GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders said e-commerce is important to Costco but not the be-all and end-all, and that the retailer is well differentiated enough that it isn't as involved in the digital grocery battle Amazon and Walmart are fighting. Costco's low-margin model, with membership revenue roughly equivalent to net income most years and an average of about 4,000 items per store versus 100,000 at Walmart, is why it partners with other companies for same-day delivery rather than building its own infrastructure.

Costco has delivered 22 straight years of dividend hikes, but its 0.7% yield has been overshadowed by special distributions declared every two or three years: $15 a share on Dec. 27, 2023, $10 on Dec. 1, 2020, $7 on May 8, 2017, $5 on Feb. 5, 2015, and $7 on Dec. 6, 2012. With three years now elapsed since the last payout, the article argues a substantial one-time dividend is likely before the end of this year, though the last two December payouts were declared in November and December rather than at the earnings report itself. Any language during the Sept. 24 earnings call suggesting the cash Costco has been stockpiling since 2023 is growing would be a dead giveaway.
COST · Capital · Positive Costco is expected to declare a record special dividend, a one-time capital return to shareholders, after reporting strong Q4 sales.

Costco Reports Q4 September 24 With DoorDash Deal Too Late to Count

Costco reports fiscal fourth-quarter results after the close on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, and its same-day delivery tie-up with DoorDash went live after the quarter closed, so the new channel cannot contribute to reported sales or earnings. The quarter covers the roughly 16-week period ending in late August or early September, and management has disclosed no fee split, margin effect, or volume target for the partnership. Costco's digital business was already accelerating without it, with fiscal Q3 2026 digitally-enabled comparable sales of 21.5% and e-commerce site and app traffic up 37%, following 22.6% digital comps in Q2. Membership economics remain the moat: Q3 brought 82.9 million paid members, membership fees of $1.37 billion, up 10.7%, and a worldwide renewal rate of 89.7%. The stock enters the quarter at $893.93, down 7.01% over the past month, and trades at a P/E of 45x, with analysts carrying a target of $1,072.20.

Costco raises motor oil prices, limits purchases as supply pressure builds

Costco Wholesale Corp. is raising motor oil prices and limiting purchases as supply pressure builds in energy markets. The bulk seller of common products through its membership warehouses is making what amounts to a tiny adjustment within its huge business, but the timing makes it worth watching. Energy markets have been under pressure, and rising oil prices could eventually reach consumers at the gas pump, in shipping costs and on store shelves. Costco's reputation rests largely on keeping prices low for members, so when costs rise the company must decide how much of the increase to absorb and how much to pass on to buyers. The purchase restrictions suggest Costco would rather keep goods on hand than risk some consumers buying exceptionally large amounts. The key question is whether this is an isolated incident; if similar price increases surface on more products, Costco buyers could feel rising energy costs far more broadly, which is the next thing investors should watch.
COST · Pricing · Negative Costco is raising motor oil prices and limiting purchases as supply pressure builds, a cost/margin pressure event on its own product pricing.
