Semiconductors

No chips, no AI, no smartphones, no EVs — nothing in the digital age works without them. But 'making a single chip' isn't done by one company. It's a long relay, handing the work off across dozens of specialists. This lesson is the map that strings the industry's 9 categories together — who does what, how they connect, and where the real power sits (each category has its own deep-dive lesson to read).

AI Memory Boom Drives Semis; Regulatory Risks Loom

  • AI Memory Pricing Power DRAM prices more than doubled, and Micron locked in about $100 billion of AI memory contracts, showing that memory makers now have strong pricing power thanks to soaring AI demand.

This is the core driver of the period's AI-driven boom.

  • Record Results and Foundry Deal Nvidia, Broadcom, and chip equipment makers reported record results, while Intel signed a foundry deal with Apple, boosting confidence across the semiconductor ecosystem.

It highlights broad-based strength beyond memory.

  • Global Fab Expansion SK Hynix raised $29 billion in a US listing, and Samsung, Micron, and Korea's AI plan fueled a global wave of new chip factories, expanding supply and investment.

It shows the scale of capital flowing into chip manufacturing.

  • Competition and Regulatory Risks Qualcomm entered data-center CPUs, adding competition. Meanwhile, US-China export controls threatened ASML, Taiwan raided Super Micro over alleged Nvidia chip smuggling, and Apple lobbied to buy from blacklisted Chinese memory firms.

It captures the key counterweights to the boom.

Memory shortage drives record profits; AI demand broadens; digestion risk looms

  • Micron's record quarter and guidance confirm memory shortage has no end in sight Micron reported blowout fiscal Q4 results (revenue $54.23B, up 379% year over year) and guided Q1 revenue to $61.5B, well above estimates. Management said there is no line of sight to when memory supply will meet demand, with conditions tighter in 2027 and 2028. This locks in strong pricing and profits for memory makers.

This is the period's biggest new event, showing the memory shortage is deepening and driving record profits across the theme.

  • AI chip demand broadens: AMD hits $1T, xAI doubles Nvidia chips, China may allow Nvidia sales AMD crossed $1 trillion market cap on record data center growth and new AI GPU deals. xAI said its Colossus 2 cluster could more than double Nvidia chip count by year-end. China signaled Alibaba and ByteDance may buy Nvidia's new RTX Pro 5500 chips. These show AI demand spreading beyond Nvidia and potentially reopening China.

These events show demand broadening across the theme and a potential new market opening, which is new information for readers.

  • Chip equipment and EDA demand surges on AI buildout KLA's backlog jumped to $12.57B on AI demand, and it raised its 2026 wafer fab equipment market outlook to low-$150B. Onto Innovation posted 35.3% revenue growth and landed a Goldman Strong Buy. Synopsys signed a $1B+ custom silicon IP deal with AWS and guided to 15% revenue growth. These confirm the AI buildout is lifting the entire supply chain.

This shows the AI demand is not just chips but also the tools and software that make them, a key part of the theme.

  • Nvidia CEO warns of eventual 'digestion' period, but not for 2-3 years Jensen Huang said the AI infrastructure boom will eventually produce more capacity than needed, leading to a 'digestion' period, but not for another two to three years. This is a long-term risk for the theme, though near-term demand remains strong. Investors should watch for signs of oversupply.

This is a new cautionary signal from a key industry leader that could affect the theme's long-term trajectory.

AI Demand Boosts Chip Results, But Valuation and Supply Risks Mount

  • Record AI-Driven Results and Multi-Year Orders Micron, TSMC, Broadcom, Nvidia, and AMD posted record results and locked in multi-year orders, with pricing power spreading across foundries, materials, and PCBs as AI and memory demand stayed relentless.

This is the core positive force that drove the sector's fundamentals during the quarter.

  • Semiconductor Index Plunges on AI-Capex Return Fears The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell over 20% as investors worried that huge AI spending may not pay off, compounded by hawkish Fed signals and China's DUV breakthrough, shaking confidence despite strong earnings.

This explains the major market pullback that contrasted with record company results.

  • Memory Shortages and Trade Barriers Raise Costs Memory shortages squeezed device makers—Apple's memory costs jumped from 10% to 34% of materials—while US tariffs and export controls raised costs and cut Nvidia's China sales, adding pressure across the supply chain.

This highlights the real counterweight of supply tightness and policy costs on the sector.

  • China's CXMT IPO and Oversupply Warnings Threaten Pricing China's CXMT IPO threatened long-term memory pricing, and Nvidia faced regulatory scrutiny plus warnings of an eventual oversupply 'digestion' period within 2–3 years, clouding the longer-term outlook.

This points to emerging competitive and regulatory risks that could undermine future pricing power.

Jabil Guides Fiscal 2027 Core EPS to $17.55 as AI Revenue Set to Jump 54%

Jabil reported fourth-quarter revenue up 29% year over year and core earnings per share up 34% to $4.40, and guided fiscal 2027 core EPS to $17.55, another gain of about 34%. The company generated $14.4 billion of AI-related revenue in fiscal 2026 and expects $22.1 billion in fiscal 2027, a 54% increase, with six customers in the segment expected to top $1 billion each in fiscal 2027. Jabil supported $36.0 billion of revenue in fiscal 2026 on just $470 million of net capital spending, lifting core return on invested capital to 59%, nearly triple the fiscal 2020 level, and buybacks absorbed about $1.1 billion of free cash flow during the year. On the risk side, chief supply chain officer Francis McKay said memory is being pulled toward AI and hyperscale buyers, squeezing other markets, and Connected Living is expected to shrink 15% to $2.3 billion, while healthcare fell short in the fourth quarter on equipment delays and a slipped customer program. Jabil is adding more than $8.5 billion of revenue in fiscal 2027, which management called unprecedented, and a second hyperscale customer is expected to pass 10% of total revenue, while net inventory days of 64 remain above the 55 to 60 day target.

Micron Adds $43 Billion in Quarterly Sales as AI Demand Drives Blowout Earnings

Micron beat sales and profit forecasts for its latest quarter, driven by voracious demand from the AI boom, with guidance also strong except for margin comments on the earnings call that may have caused a muted market reaction. The memory chipmaker added about $43 billion in sales during the most recent quarter compared to the year-ago quarter, and more than $13 billion in sales from the quarter reported three months ago. Operating margins exploded in all business segments, exceeding 80% in some segments. Micron executives signaled tight capacity and higher prices for its products until 2028, with D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria saying expectations for tightening supply-demand conditions through both 2027 and 2028 meaningfully extend the industry's runway for strong pricing and earnings growth. The stock trades on a single-digit forward P/E ratio.

Semtech Fair Value Raised to US$210.33 as Analysts Back Data Center and LoRa

Semtech's modeled fair value has been lifted from US$204.83 to US$210.33, reflecting a modestly higher assessment of the stock's worth in the updated framework. The revision follows a broad pattern of raised price targets from Oppenheimer, Roth Capital, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Seaport Research, and BMO Capital, tied largely to stronger expected contributions from data center and LoRa. Oppenheimer noted that data center exposure has shifted from about 5% of sales a couple of years ago to a figure it expects to exceed 40% by the end of the current year, while Roth Capital and UBS said data center and LoRa together are approaching 60% of the mix and supporting expanding gross margins over time. Morgan Stanley kept an Equal Weight rating even after lifting its target, and Roth Capital flagged potential confusion around guidance following the divestiture of cellular modules, which removes at least US$40m of quarterly sales and associated earnings. Alongside the fair value change, the revenue growth assumption moved from 27.53% to 34.83%, the net profit margin assumption from 24.19% to 30.20%, the future P/E from 58.82x to 32.02x, and the discount rate from 11.27% to 11.40%.

Arm's Data-Center Chip Push Tests Its Licensing Moat

Arm Holdings is moving beyond designing processors for others by selling its own data-center CPU, a shift that could capture more revenue per system but changes its relationship with the customers that license its technology. In its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results released July 29, Arm reported $1.29 billion of revenue, with royalties of $715 million, up 22%, and licensing and other revenue of $574 million, up 23%, while data-center royalty revenue more than doubled. Arm said its AGI CPU had been delivered to initial customers and that it had secured capacity for a $1 billion revenue opportunity across fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028, with management describing demand exceeding $2 billion over those two years, a figure it characterized as demand commentary rather than recognized revenue or a guaranteed order book. At a September 30 market-data snapshot, Arm traded at roughly 59 times enterprise value to trailing revenue and about 205 times trailing free cash flow, and the company had 15,521,694 shares sold short at the September 15 settlement with 3.9 days to cover. The bull case rests on Arm earning royalties from customers' processors while using its own product to accelerate adoption of its architecture, while the bear case is a gradual erosion of neutrality as customers grow reluctant to share roadmaps with a supplier competing for the same server budget.

Chuangyao Technology Earnings Call Responds to SparkLink 2.0 and M&A Questions; First-Half Revenue and Net Profit Both Decline

Chuangyao Technology held its 2026 semi-annual earnings briefing on September 29 via the Shanghai Stock Exchange's SSE Roadshow Center, responding to investor questions on SparkLink 2.0 tape-out and M&A progress. In the first half of 2026, the company achieved operating revenue of 167 million yuan, down 9.02% year-on-year; net profit attributable to the parent was 11.7539 million yuan, plunging 63.16% year-on-year; non-GAAP net profit swung from 26.7156 million yuan in the same period last year to a loss of 2.7683 million yuan, a decline of 110.36%, which the company said was mainly due to a year-on-year increase in government subsidies during the period. Gross margin fell to 28.00% in the first half, down 3.28 percentage points year-on-year, and net margin was only 7.05%, down 10.36 percentage points from the same period last year; net cash flow from operating activities was 45.7005 million yuan, surging 181.95% year-on-year, but the company admitted this was mainly due to an increase in deposit interest actually received. In the second quarter, the company achieved operating revenue of 96.1239 million yuan, up 36.23% quarter-on-quarter, but net profit attributable to the parent was only 1.368 million yuan, down 93.2% year-on-year and down 86.83% quarter-on-quarter. The company confirmed that SparkLink 2.0 has been initiated and is under continuous R&D investment, with the protocol standard adding a network layer and featuring ranging and positioning as well as integrated sensing and communication functions, but regarding when tape-out and shipment will occur and when mass production will begin, it only said to refer to company announcements; EtherCAT slave controller chips have achieved sales to customers in industrial, medical, semiconductor and other fields, and have entered the domestic mainstream embodied robot industry chain, but related revenue still accounts for a relatively low proportion. On M&A progress, the company responded that its investment and M&A layout is advancing steadily, and it will actively yet prudently promote external expansion under strict risk control. As of September 30, the company's stock price closed at 31.99 yuan per share, down more than 50% from the issue price of 66.6 yuan per share, and remains below the issue price.

Micron's Low P/E Hinges on Whether Memory Profits Hold

Micron Technology's fiscal 2026 results leave investors weighing how much of its memory-shortage profit can erode before the stock stops looking cheap. At its September 30 close of $1,065.11, the company carried a roughly $1.2 trillion equity value against $84.97 billion of fiscal 2026 net income, about 14 times annual earnings. Micron reported $133.19 billion of annual revenue, with its final quarter generating $54.23 billion and an 86.8% GAAP gross margin, and guidance for the next quarter calls for $61.5 billion of revenue, plus or minus $1.5 billion, at an approximately 85.95% GAAP gross margin. Management said 26 take-or-pay agreements cover over 35% of estimated revenue through 2030, with most revenue under a defined pricing framework carrying floor-and-ceiling bands, and it expects margins at floor prices above prior cycle peaks. Micron produced $89.68 billion of fiscal 2026 operating cash flow and $62.31 billion of adjusted free cash flow after $27.37 billion of net capital expenditure, an approximately 5.2% cash yield on the $1.2 trillion equity value.

Google Raises Pixel 10a Price by $100 to $599 on Memory Cost Pressure

Google has raised the price of its seven-month-old Pixel 10a smartphone by $100 to $599 for the 128GB model, another sign of how rising memory costs are pushing up prices across the consumer electronics industry. The Pixel 10a launched in March at $499 for the 128GB model and $599 for the 256GB version, and Google's U.S. website now lists the phones at $599 and $699, respectively. The increase was first spotted on Google's online store in Japan and later appeared on its U.S. website, according to 9to5Google. The move comes amid a persistent memory-chip shortage that has pushed up costs across the consumer electronics industry, with Samsung this week raising prices on most of its Galaxy S26 smartphones by $100, while Apple raised prices on its iPhone 18 lineup and also increased prices on some older models. Google had already raised prices across its Pixel 11 lineup by $100 when it introduced the phones in August, according to Bloomberg, offsetting some of the higher starting prices by including more storage in the base configurations. The Pixel 10a had been discounted to $424 last month, and Walmart still appeared to be selling the phone for $499, although supplies were limited.

Micron Earnings, Soft Jobs Data and Bitcoin Rally Lift Bull Market

Micron Technology delivered another outstanding earnings report Wednesday evening, with revenue, earnings and margins all surging and management offering another strong outlook as demand continues to overwhelm available supply. According to UBS estimates, memory represented roughly 14% of total AI capital spending in 2025, a share expected to jump to 37% in 2026 and 64% by 2027. The U.S. economy added just 29,000 jobs in September, while July was revised down to a 10,000-job loss and August was revised lower to 133,000, with July and August payroll growth reduced by another 60,000 jobs combined; St. Louis Fed estimates put the breakeven rate needed to keep unemployment stable somewhere around 15,000 to 87,000 jobs per month. Bitcoin has gained roughly 35% over the past three months compared with about 10% for the Nasdaq 100, reversing its earlier summer underperformance. The Nasdaq is printing fresh all-time highs while the S&P 500 knocks on the door of record highs, as softer labor data pulls Treasury yields lower and eases pressure on the Fed to raise rates again.

Micron Beats Estimates With $33.42 EPS, Guides Stronger for Fiscal 2027

Micron reported quarterly earnings per share of $33.42, beating Wall Street expectations by 5.73% and marking its 14th consecutive quarter of topping Zacks Consensus Analyst Estimates, with record profits and triple-digit revenue and earnings growth driven by AI demand. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said fiscal 2027 will be even stronger, and the company's Q1 2027 guidance did not disappoint. Micron shares have surged over 1,300% in the past five years yet trade at a price-to-earnings ratio of 23.61x and a market cap of just $1 trillion, even as the company is expected to generate more quarterly profit next quarter than NVIDIA did in the first quarter of 2026, when NVIDIA earned $40 billion in quarterly profit at a $4.8 trillion market cap. Management said Micron holds 26 multi-year take-or-pay agreements covering more than 35% of expected revenue through 2030, with customer financial commitments rising to $32 billion from $22 billion last quarter, mostly in cash deposits. Micron also confirmed the DRAM supply and demand imbalance remains, saying it has no line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance, and expects humanoid robot production and physical AI to add a significant layer of memory and storage demand by the end of this decade.

TSMC Weighs Additional Chip Plants in Texas With Tens of Billions in Spending

TSMC is considering building a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, with expectations of adding several tens of billions of dollars in investment under a multi-year plan to expand its chipmaking business in the United States. Sources say the Texas project covers the construction of multiple chip plants, and if the investment goes ahead, each plant would cost at least 20 billion dollars. Previously, TSMC pledged to invest 265 billion dollars in Arizona, where several plants are currently under construction. The Texas investment depends on whether the U.S. government extends a tax credit measure for advanced manufacturing that is set to expire at the end of this year. The plan is still at an early stage and no details have been officially disclosed. TSMC is a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, with revenue from wafer manufacturing in America accounting for more than 75% of its revenue from that business this year.

Infineon opens new semiconductor plant in Thailand with total project cost of 1.4 billion dollars

German semiconductor giant Infineon Technologies opened a new plant in Thailand on the first of the month. The new facility on the outskirts of Bangkok is a back-end site handling semiconductor assembly and testing, with an initial investment of more than 100 million euros, or 113.57 million dollars, while the total project value reaches 1.4 billion dollars according to a statement from Thailand's Board of Investment. According to Infineon Chief Operating Officer Alexander Gorski, the site initially features cleanrooms, the controlled environments required for semiconductor manufacturing, of up to 30,000 square meters, and can be expanded to as much as 150,000 square meters in the future. Gorski said this is a strategic long-term investment and cited Thailand's proximity to major markets such as China as a strength. According to Gorski, Infineon has 13 manufacturing sites in the United States, Europe, China and Southeast Asia, and leveraging existing cleanroom capacity could potentially double its revenue. The expansion in Thailand is also part of efforts to offer customers dual sourcing, and Narit, secretary-general of the Board of Investment, said the agency is focusing on photonics, power semiconductors and sensors as part of a long-term strategy in the semiconductor field, aiming to attract 18 billion dollars in semiconductor investment by 2030.

Musk Says Tesla Halved Optimus Chip Memory to Scale Production

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Thursday that the company cut memory specifications on its next-generation Optimus robot chips to scale production, after Micron said humanoid robots could require hundreds of gigabytes of memory each. In a post on X, Musk said Tesla cut the AI5 chip's memory in half to 72GB and the AI6 chip's memory by a third to 144GB, calling it the only way to get enough volume for Optimus production and saying it greatly reduces cost. He added the cuts should have a negligible effect on Optimus performance because memory bandwidth is a bigger limiting factor than total memory capacity. On Micron's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call Wednesday, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said humanoid robots are expected to need more than 200 gigabytes of memory and multiple terabytes of storage per unit, similar to autonomous vehicles, and that physical AI could become a significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of the decade. Tesla has reportedly placed its first large-scale component order for roughly 5,000 Optimus units and aims to eventually build 1 million units a year.

Krungsri upgrades electronics stocks to Bullish, highlighting DELTA and KCE as top picks

The analyst team at Krungsri Securities has raised its recommendation on the electronic components sector to Bullish from Neutral, expecting every company in the group to post stronger earnings in the third quarter of 2026 than in the second quarter, with momentum continuing through the fourth quarter of 2026 and into 2027. The brokerage expects the industry's combined profit to grow 52% in 2027, accelerating from 42% in 2026, driven by demand for both AI-related and non-AI products. It recommends buying all three stocks under coverage: DELTA with a target price of 320 baht and KCE with a target price of 97 baht, naming them top picks on the theme of product price increases, which should deliver the strongest net profit per share growth in 2027. DELTA is expected to post profit growth of 51% in 2027, up from 42% in 2026, while KCE is seen growing from 77% in 2026 to 82% in 2027, and HANA from 24% in 2026 to 45% in 2027. The brokerage also raised its earnings forecasts for KCE by 5% for 2026 and by 28% for 2027 to reflect its positive view that KCE is entering a sustained cycle of product price increases, including one more price increase in October 2026 on top of the two previously expected in July 2026 and January 2027. Among non-AI stocks, it still prefers KCE over HANA because KCE operates further upstream and owns its own laminate factory, giving it better control over raw material costs.

Synopsys announced partnerships with OpenAI and Amazon at its investor day, positioning the chip designer as a major player in the AI boom. CEO Sassine Ghazi said the OpenAI partnership combines frontier intelligence and reasoning with Synopsys's domain-specific tools to help chip designers achieve better performance, power, and reliability faster. On the Amazon side, Ghazi said the company committed a billion dollars for next-generation chips to use Synopsys's new application optimized IP, a new business category aimed at the custom silicon market. Amazon is the lead customer for that emerging business, but Ghazi said Synopsys signed a number of other contracts as well, without naming them. He noted that companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are all building their own chips, driving demand for Synopsys software and interface IP that connects chips to each other and to systems.

Micron CFO Says No Line of Sight for End of Memory Shortage

Micron CFO Mark Murphy said there is no line of sight on when memory supply will be sufficient to meet demand, as the company reported blowout fiscal Q4 results driven by the AI buildout. Earnings per share came in at $33.42, up 1,002% from $3.03 in the same quarter last year, while revenue climbed 379% to $54.23 billion from $11.31 billion. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on the earnings call that industry demand has strengthened since the last earnings call and that memory and storage supply-demand conditions are expected to be much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, adding that as strong as fiscal 2026 was, fiscal 2027 should be even better. To head off a bust, Micron has signed 26 strategic customer agreements covering more than 35% of its revenue through 2030, most with pricing floors and ceilings. Murphy said Micron is building additional manufacturing capacity, but the facilities will take years to complete and months more to ramp once wafers start rolling off the lines.

Vishay Launches Four 650 V Superjunction MOSFET Power Modules in SOT-227 Package

Vishay Intertechnology introduced four new power modules featuring 650 V superjunction MOSFETs in the industry-standard SOT-227 package. The Vishay Semiconductors VS-FC50SA65, VS-FC100SA65, VS-FC150SA65, and VS-FC50LA65 are designed to deliver an optimized balance between conduction and switching losses for high efficiency power conversion in industrial applications. Three of the devices are in a single-switch configuration with nominal current ratings of 50 A, 100 A, and 150 A, while the fourth is a 50 A device in a low side chopper configuration that integrates a 650 V SiC diode. All four leverage the latest 650 V superjunction MOSFET technology to achieve a competitive tradeoff between on-resistance and gate charge, and they operate over a temperature range of -55 °C to +150 °C. The SOT-227 package provides a drop-in replacement for competing solutions, lowering costs by eliminating the need for PCB redesigns, and sample and production quantities are available now with lead times of 12 weeks.

Micron Posts Record Earnings as Taiwan Union Moves Toward Strike Vote

Micron Technology reported record quarterly results after the close on Wednesday, but a labor dispute at its Taiwan operations is now threatening production at one of its key manufacturing bases. Fourth-quarter revenue came in at $54.23 billion, ahead of the $50.45 billion consensus and nearly five times the $11.32 billion reported a year earlier, while adjusted earnings of $33.42 a share beat estimates of $31.16. For the full fiscal year, revenue reached $133.19 billion against $37.38 billion the prior year, with operating margin at 76% on a non-GAAP basis, and Micron guided first-quarter revenue to $60 billion to $63 billion, well above the $56.77 billion consensus, with earnings of $37.15 to $39.15 a share. Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra credited AI demand and the company's Strategic Customer Agreements for the record fiscal 2026 results. According to reports, Micron said its roughly 15,000 Taiwan employees would receive the company's largest-ever compensation package for fiscal 2026, worth the equivalent of 35 to 68 months of base salary for production staff, but the Taoyuan union is pushing for a permanent mechanism allocating 15% of operating profit to employee bonuses rather than another one-off payout. Union chairman Lin Che-jui has said the aim is a long-term, transparent system, negotiations broke down on Sept. 21, and the union has announced plans for a strike vote, while Micron has said it remains willing to continue talks and separate mediation with the Taichung union is scheduled for Oct. 22. Taiwan is one of Micron's most important manufacturing bases for DRAM and the high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers, making any disruption a risk for investors at a time when supply is already tight, and a poll on workplace platform Blind found 75% of respondents support the Micron strikers receiving the additional 15%.
