BofA Raises AI Data Center Market Forecast to $2.2 Trillion, Names Nvidia, Intel, Micron Top Chip Picks
BofA semiconductor analyst Vivek Arya raised his estimate for the AI data center systems addressable market to $2.2 trillion at a 40% annual pace for CY26-30, up from a prior $1.8 trillion at 33%. Arya said the virtuous flywheel of agentic tool adoption by consumers and enterprises, competition between public and private AI labs, and limited chip supply will likely keep AI spending robust for the next several years, adding that any pacing or addition of safety guardrails to frontier models is likely to increase rather than reduce compute requirements. He named Nvidia, Intel, Micron, Marvell and Lam Research as top picks with near-term catalysts, citing enhanced buybacks and multiple GTC tradeshow events for Nvidia, agentic CPU strength and foundry win anticipation for Intel, the start of buybacks from December 9 for Micron, an Analyst Day on October 6 and an XPU ramp for Marvell, and share gain potential across memory and logic for Lam Research. Arya said he also continues to like AMD, Applied Materials, Analog Devices and On Semiconductor, and is staying watchful on Broadcom, which he rates Buy on compelling valuation with potential for enhanced buybacks when the company reports fiscal fourth-quarter results in December. He noted that the SOX is trading at a 21x forward PE, 12% below its 24x median multiple since the onset of ChatGPT and well below 40%-plus projected EPS growth potential, and that the fourth and first calendar quarters have historically been the two best seasonal quarters to own chip stocks, with 300-500 basis points of median outperformance versus the S&P 500 from 2010 to 2025.
TCW Fund Flags ON Semiconductor's $7 Billion Synaptics Deal as Shares Fall 20%
ON Semiconductor Corporation announced in late June an all-stock acquisition of Synaptics valued at $7 billion, a deal that sent its shares down 20% and prompted several sell-side analysts to downgrade the stock. TCW Relative Value Mid Cap Fund disclosed the development in its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, noting that ON Semiconductor shares had rallied more than 100% in May and June on a data center story before the Synaptics announcement. Despite the late-June pullback, the stock still gained 52.7% over the quarter and was among the fund's best performers, alongside Centene Corporation and Jabil. The fund said the all-stock structure has caused investors to question the impact of dilution and the motivation behind the deal, making the ON Semiconductor investment story more convoluted. ON Semiconductor closed at $75.95 on September 29, 2026, with a $29.49 billion market capitalization and a roughly 39.45% year-to-date gain, within a 52-week range of $44.56 to $134.92. The TCW Relative Value Mid Cap Fund returned 14.10% in the quarter versus the Index's 13.40%, with portfolio stock selection contributing positively at plus 174 basis points.

ON Semiconductor Shares Fall 9% as Investor Day TAM Drops $30 Billion
ON Semiconductor shares closed down 9.02% at $66.60 after its own investor day, where the total addressable market presented was $213 billion, $30 billion below the $243 billion figure the company cited in June when it announced the Synaptics acquisition. CEO Hassane El-Khoury told CNBC the smaller number reflects the core onsemi business, since the Synaptics deal, expected to close in mid-2027, keeps the two companies separate until antitrust review concludes. He described the AI data center growth assumption as anchored to a 30% market, the middle of the range, plus 10 points of outgrowth, a claim testable only through design wins such as expanded content in the NVIDIA MGX ecosystem, two power-supply platform wins with Great Wall in China, and AWS power-supply and battery-backup content in the United States. Management's 53% gross margin target compares with a Q2 non-GAAP gross margin of 39.3%, and the company's sensitivity of 25 to 30 basis points of gross-margin improvement per point of utilization shows how much depends on volume that has not yet arrived. The stock carries a forward P/E near 17 against an average analyst target of $106.88, while a trailing P/E of 47 leaves little room for another miss.
