US Pushes to Cut Taiwan Chip Reliance as TSMC's US Investment Hits $265 Billion
The United States is pouring billions into domestic semiconductor manufacturing to reduce its reliance on Taiwan for advanced AI chips, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s U.S. investment commitment reaching $265 billion. The planned expansion includes six logic fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and a research and development center in Arizona, and TSMC has indicated that roughly 30% of its 2-nanometer and more advanced manufacturing capacity could eventually be located in the state. Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities, cautioned that expanding domestic production does not mean the U.S. can fully replace Taiwan, saying he views the U.S. buildout as a strategic hedge rather than a true replacement, and noting that even chips manufactured in Arizona could continue depending on Asian facilities for parts of the final packaging process. Boloor said Washington is prioritizing capabilities where disruptions could have the greatest consequences, including advanced logic, packaging and domestic capacity to support critical AI infrastructure, while Taiwan is expected to remain central to leading-edge research and manufacturing. In February 2026, Taiwan rejected a U.S. proposal to shift 40% of its semiconductor supply chain to America, with Taipei's top tariff negotiator calling the plan impossible.

Wells Fargo Sees Semiconductor Equipment Suppliers as Winners in TSMC 2nm Expansion
Wells Fargo says semiconductor capital-equipment companies could be the biggest near-term beneficiaries of a potential TSMC expansion of 2-nanometer production. Analyst Joe Quatrochi wrote that reports of the possible capacity increase should be viewed as a potentially incremental positive opportunity for semi cap companies, though timing, size and node details are still unconfirmed. Building additional 2nm capacity would require significant spending on lithography, deposition, etching and inspection equipment, adding a layer of demand for suppliers supporting TSMC's fabs. Quatrochi pointed to the so-called Silicon Prairie as a logical location for a potential second U.S. campus, citing existing semiconductor operations in Texas from Texas Instruments, Samsung, Coherent and Terafab, plus TSMC's design service center in Austin. TSMC's major 2nm customers include Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm, with Google, Broadcom, Marvell, Amazon and OpenAI also expected to use the advanced process.

TSMC to Raise Wafer Prices 3% to 6% Starting in 2027
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing plans to raise wafer foundry prices by 3% to 6% starting in 2027, with the largest increases targeted at advanced process nodes used in high performance computing and AI chips. Management is preparing the multi-year pricing update as capacity remains tight for AI-related demand and advanced packaging through 2030. The move is intended to give the company more room to earn a return on heavy spending for 2nm and other advanced facilities, tilting its foundry model further toward higher-value capacity rather than pure volume. Raising prices first can signal confidence in tight supply, but it also invites Samsung and Intel to adjust their own pricing, and any meaningful discount or aggressive incentives from rivals could pull future AI programs or advanced packaging work away. The key test for investors is whether customers lock in multi-year agreements through 2027 at the higher wafer rates, especially on 2nm and related advanced nodes, with disclosed capacity commitments, utilization data around those leading processes, and management commentary on pricing discipline as the metrics to track.

TSMC and ASML Launch 12-Inch EUV Photomask Initiative Targeting 2031 Pilot Line
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and ASML Holding announced a collaborative industry initiative on September 8 to transition the semiconductor sector to a 12-inch Extreme Ultraviolet photomask format, replacing the 6-inch masks chipmakers currently use for High NA EUV systems. The shift aims to boost scanner productivity, eliminate stitching constraints on ultra-large chips, and lower long-term advanced node manufacturing costs, with the initiative targeting a pilot line by 2031 and 12-inch High-NA production by 2033. TSMC plans to adopt High-NA EUV starting in 2030, with the 12-inch masks providing a multi-year roadmap for scaling complex AI architectures. For ASML, establishing a 12-inch standard locks in the long-term economic case for its High-NA scanner line, supporting its 15% revenue expansion outlook, while for TSMC the larger format helps defend its leading-edge and AI/HPC manufacturing dominance. The decade-long roadmap carries execution risk, as the entire global supply chain, from mask blanks and inspection equipment to automated handling, must retool from scratch, and TSMC faces near-term gross margin dilution from its N2 ramp and overseas fab expansions while ASML contends with gross margin pressure in late 2025 and geopolitical growth uncertainties through 2026.

Asset Plus Fund Management Says AI Is Not Yet in a Bubble, Eyes Return on Investment
Asset Plus Fund Management assesses that the rally in technology stocks and the massive investment in AI infrastructure still show no clear sign of entering bubble territory. Kamolyot Sukhumsuwan, Chief Investment Officer, said such concerns are reasonable given the rapid rise in share prices and the accelerating investment by hyperscalers in data centers, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence infrastructure, pushing capital expenditure budgets to record highs. However, any assessment should look at demand across the entire supply chain rather than share prices or the size of CapEx alone. Upstream, ASML reported sales of 9.3 billion euros, beating market expectations, and raised its full-year revenue target, with nearly all of its order book already secured for 2027. TSMC, meanwhile, posted revenue of 40.2 billion US dollars, up 33% from a year earlier, with its High Performance Computing business accounting for 66% of total revenue, and raised its 2026 capital expenditure budget to 60 to 64 billion US dollars. In memory, Micron said its HBM production capacity for 2026 is fully booked under long-term contracts, while SK Hynix has begun mass shipments of HBM4 and has long-term agreements with several customers. On the conversion of orders into revenue, NVIDIA reported revenue of 96.2 billion US dollars in its latest quarter, up 106% from a year earlier, with Data Center revenue at 89.0 billion US dollars, while Broadcom posted revenue of 29.6 billion US dollars, up 86%, with AI chip revenue up 221% to 16.7 billion US dollars. The key issue to watch next is how well this enormous wave of investment will generate adequate returns, since CapEx is starting to pressure cash flow and financing costs remain high. AI Infrastructure and AI Labs, which rely heavily on external funding, carry more risk than hyperscalers with strong financial positions. Asset Plus Fund Management still sees AI as a key long-term investment trend, but investors should focus on the quality of growth and choose companies that can sustainably turn AI opportunities into earnings.

Meta to Deploy Custom AI Chips in Data Centers by 2027
Meta Platforms is moving deeper into custom AI silicon, with a new generation of internally designed chips set to enter its data centers in the first half of 2027. The company is currently testing its third-generation MTIA 450 processor, code-named Arke, while its successor, MTIA 500, or Astrid, is expected to complete design work in about a month and reach data centers by the end of 2027. Meta is working with Broadcom on chip design and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on production, and has committed to deploying more than a gigawatt of the chips over a 12-month period. Twelve Arke chips delivered by TSMC on Sept. 1 performed within 2% to 3% of Meta's simulations and have already run Meta models alongside models from DeepSeek and Alibaba. Meta also canceled its planned Olympus processor, which was intended to handle both AI training and inference, partly because of cost concerns, and is instead prioritizing inference, the day-to-day running of AI models.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's co-chief operating officer Y.J. Mii warned that artificial intelligence remains powerful but immature, saying the technology is like a three-year-old superman that can be quite powerful but doesn't know what kind of damage it can inflict and doesn't know right from wrong. Speaking to students at National Taiwan University, Mii said TSMC remains wary of using AI with confidential research and development data because improper deployment could lead to information leaks or data loss. He also said current AI systems provide limited assistance in developing cutting-edge chipmaking processes, where progress depends heavily on physics, manufacturing constraints and access to increasingly advanced equipment. The comments come as the broader technology industry debates whether frontier AI development should slow while safety controls catch up, following recent incidents involving rogue AI agents accessing external systems. TSMC sits at the center of the AI supply chain, with Nvidia and Apple among the major customers depending on its leading-edge manufacturing capacity, making protection of proprietary process technology critical to its competitive moat.

Anthropic is expected to list as early as October and is in talks to bring Nvidia in as an anchor investor.
TSMC Plans High-NA Lithography by 2030 as A14 Node Targets 2028
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing plans to adopt High-NA lithography by 2030, according to Reuters, while its A14 manufacturing node is slated to begin production in 2028, roughly two years earlier. The two milestones are not interchangeable: High-NA is the next step in extreme-ultraviolet lithography equipment, whereas A14 is an entire manufacturing node built from multiple process technologies, so TSMC does not need every next-generation tool running simultaneously to advance its leading-edge roadmap. The U.S.-listed shares traded at $418.84, down approximately 3.3% from the earlier session reference point. GuruFocus puts GF Value at $363.08, leaving the stock 15.36% above that estimate. The key test for investors is whether TSMC can keep improving yields, performance and cost per transistor with the equipment already available.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported record August revenue of NT$514.81 billion, up 53.3% from a year earlier and 10.1% sequentially, with January-through-August revenue up 39.3%. The result signals strong advanced semiconductor demand as Advanced Micro Devices scales its data-center CPUs and AI accelerators, which depend on leading-edge foundry capacity. Barron's noted concerns over reports that TSMC could raise chip prices by as much as 10% next year, with AMD among the customers exposed to higher foundry costs. Hedge fund ownership of both stocks rose in the second quarter, with 249 funds holding TSM, up from 234, and AMD ownership climbing to 164 funds from 134, while short interest stood near 0.6% for TSM and roughly 2.5% for AMD as of August 14.

TSMC Trades at $428 as 24/7 Wall St. Sets $492 Target on Record August Sales
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is trading at $428.29 against a 24/7 Wall St. price target of $492.37, implying 14.96% upside on a buy rating with 90% confidence. The call rests on record August 2026 revenue that surged 53.3% year over year, with January-through-August revenue up 39.3%, prompting management to raise full-year 2026 revenue guidance to slightly above 40% USD growth. Q2 2026 delivered EPS of $4.31 against a $3.8866 estimate, revenue of $40.20 billion, up 36.05% year over year, and a 67.7% gross margin, while Q3 revenue is guided to $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion and the 2026 capital budget was raised to $60 billion to $64 billion. The bull case leans on demand from Nvidia, whose Q3 guide of $108 billion, and Broadcom, whose Q3 FY26 AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year, effectively lock in TSMC's advanced-node order book, while Intel Foundry lost $2.1 billion in its latest quarter. The main near-term risk is gross-margin compression, with the 2nm ramp expected to dilute gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points and overseas fabs adding another 2 to 3 points of drag, alongside Taiwan-Strait geopolitics as an unpriced tail risk; the bear-case one-year price is $413.79 against a bull case of $525.08 and a sell-side consensus target of $552.38.
