Chip Stocks Slide as AI Leaders Urge Slowdown in Frontier Model Development
Penguin Solutions, Kulicke and Soffa, and Qorvo shares fell sharply after the chief executives of Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX publicly united to call for a deliberate slowdown in the development of frontier AI models over escalating safety risks. According to CNBC, the sell-off was triggered by an essay published over the weekend by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who urged a more cautious approach to frontier model advancement and called for independent safety monitoring, a proposal quickly endorsed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Penguin Solutions fell 7.2%, Kulicke and Soffa dropped 6.3%, and Qorvo declined 6.7% as the warnings sparked concern over the sustainability of the heavy capital spending that has driven tech valuations higher. Citigroup shifted to a neutral stance on broader equity risk, cautioning that any institutional pause or deceleration in AI deployments could temper corporate earnings growth and pressure chipmakers reliant on rapid infrastructure expansion. Penguin Solutions is up 135% since the beginning of the year, but at $47.60 per share it remains 41.5% below its 52-week high of $81.39 from July 2026.

Processors and Graphics Chips Stocks Post Strong Q1, Intel Leads with 93% Surge
The nine processors and graphics chips stocks tracked by this publication reported a very strong first quarter, with aggregate revenues beating analysts' consensus estimates by 2.9% and next-quarter revenue guidance coming in 4.2% above expectations. Allegro MicroSystems posted revenue of $243.2 million, up 26.1% year-on-year and 3.2% above estimates, though it missed EPS forecasts. Lattice Semiconductor delivered the best performance with revenue of $170.9 million, a 42.2% increase that beat estimates by 3.6%, while Qualcomm was the slowest, reporting $10.6 billion in revenue, down 2.2% and in line with expectations but issuing weak guidance. 3 Reasons to Avoid QRVO and 1 Stock to Buy Instead
Qorvo has underperformed quality standards, with three key concerns highlighted: revenue has declined at a 1.7% annual rate over the past five years, analysts forecast a further 5.7% drop in the next 12 months, and operating margin has shrunk by 15.2 percentage points over five years to a trailing 11.2%. The stock trades at 13.8 times forward earnings, or $92.50 per share, which suggests good news is already priced in. Investors are pointed toward a dominant aerospace business as a better alternative.
Qorvo shares surge 3.6% on progress in Skyworks acquisition
Qorvo shares rallied 3.6% in the last trading session to close at $101.98. The move came on notable volume and was largely buoyed by a positive response to exchange offers by Skyworks for Qorvo's Senior Notes due 2029 and 2031, clearing a major hurdle for the proposed acquisition of Qorvo by Skyworks to close by early 2027. Qorvo is expected to post quarterly earnings of $1.10 per share, a year-over-year increase of 19.6%, on revenues of $738.71 million, down 9.8% from the year-ago quarter. The consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has remained unchanged over the last 30 days, and the stock carries a Zacks Rank of 3, or Hold. Skyworks Solutions, another stock in the Zacks Semiconductors - Radio Frequency industry, finished the session 5.1% higher at $76.18 and also holds a Zacks Rank of 3.

Chip Stocks Qorvo, onsemi, and Lam Research Fall as Fund Survey Flags Overcrowding
Shares of Qorvo, onsemi, and Lam Research declined in afternoon trading amid a broader semiconductor sell-off triggered by a Bank of America fund manager survey showing 80% of respondents view semiconductors as the most crowded trade, the highest reading in the survey's history. The exit was intensified by May import prices rising 1.9%, nearly double the 1.1% consensus, and an annual gain of 6.7%, the largest since August 2022, which complicated the inflation outlook. Market anticipation of Kevin Warsh's first meeting as Federal Reserve Chair, with some expecting a hawkish hold, added to the pressure. Qorvo fell 4.1%, onsemi dropped 4.7%, and Lam Research also lost 4.7%.
