BOI Confirms Japan's Continued Investment in Thailand, 328.7 Billion Baht in First Half

The Board of Investment (BOI) has revealed that Japan remains a key investment partner for Thailand. In 2025, Japanese investors applied for investment promotion for 302 projects with a total value exceeding 113.7 billion baht, more than doubling from the previous year. In the first half of 2026, there were 123 projects worth 32.79 billion baht, reflecting that Thailand remains an important investment base for Japan, particularly for investments aimed at upgrading technology and increasing production efficiency to support the transition of global industries. BOI Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi stated that Japanese investment is entering a new cycle, building on existing production bases to develop high-value products. For instance, Isuzu is investing over 15 billion baht to upgrade its pickup truck production base, Mazda is investing 7.4 billion baht to produce new hybrid models, Mitsubishi has announced an additional investment of 16 billion baht by 2030, and Honda plans to invest 12 billion baht by 2029 to produce two new car models. This makes Thailand the only country outside Japan to produce a total of eight car models. Meanwhile, the automotive supply chain is shifting towards EV and hybrid components, such as Astemo investing 3.5 billion baht to produce PCU inverters and Aisin investing in hybrid transmission systems. The electronics sector is also expanding into advanced components, with Murata producing MLCCs and Panasonic producing upstream materials for circuit boards. The new factory will be the first production base for MEGTRON materials in ASEAN to support AI. Additionally, there are investments in aviation and agri-food, such as NMB-Minebea investing over 2.6 billion baht to open an aircraft parts factory in Lopburi, and Toyo Saikan investing 2.47 billion baht to produce plant-based beverages. A survey by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce (JCC) indicates that 23% of Japanese companies plan to increase their investment in Thailand in 2026, while 48% will maintain their current investment levels. The BOI also supports the establishment of regional offices in Thailand, with over 40% currently coming from Japan.

Tesla's Japan Sales Surge as Delivery Network Expands

Tesla registered roughly 12,000 vehicles in Japan in the first six months of this year, more than doubling its 2025 full-year total of over 10,000. June registrations jumped 183.7% year over year to 3,997 vehicles, making Tesla Japan's second-best-selling imported brand for the month behind Mercedes-Benz and ahead of BMW. To keep up with demand, Tesla plans to increase its delivery sites in Japan by 60% this year, from seven to 11, adding locations in Yokohama, Kobe, the Greater Tokyo Area, and Nagoya. The company also added Mikawa Port in Aichi prefecture as a second import entry point, roughly doubling annual import capacity to about 48,000 vehicles. Japan's revised EV subsidy framework, which emphasizes supply-chain security and V2X capability, favors Tesla due to its Panasonic battery cells and bidirectional charging support, while reducing incentives for Chinese EV makers like BYD.

Global bond issuance hits record $3.68 trillion in first half on AI investment

Global bond issuance in the first half of this year reached a record high of $3.68 trillion, up 10% from the same period in 2025 and up 50% from the trough in 2022, according to LSEG data. The number of deals fell 12% to 10,408, reflecting larger individual fundraisings. Large bond issues were concentrated in the United States, which accounted for over 30% of global value for the first time in six years. The biggest deal was Amazon's $36.8 billion bond sale in March, which together with euro-denominated bonds brought the total to $54 billion for data center and AI investment. Meta and Nvidia each issued about $25 billion in bonds. SoftBank Group issued dollar- and euro-denominated bonds worth 570 billion yen in April to invest in OpenAI, and Panasonic Holdings issued $500 million in dollar bonds this month. Concerns over rising debt burdens have led investors to demand higher returns, with Amazon's credit spread widening from 1.2% to 1.4% after announcing an additional $25 billion bond sale. S&P Global Ratings downgraded Oracle's long-term bond rating to BBB- due to higher debt from AI investments. Meanwhile, the BIS warned that an AI bubble could affect financial stability, and Goldman Sachs views this competition as a winner-takes-all dynamic.

Panasonic to localise US data centre battery production, CEO says

Panasonic is seeking to localise its U.S. supply chain for energy storage systems as it prepares to produce battery cells at a plant in Kansas for data centres, CEO Yuki Kusumi said on Tuesday. The company plans to begin mass production of battery cells for data centres at the Kansas plant of its energy unit, which also makes batteries for Tesla, in the financial year ending March 2029. Kusumi said Panasonic does not plan to make lithium iron phosphate batteries, as they are less suited to its focus on distributed systems that smooth peak power demand at individual servers. He added that Panasonic was not struggling to secure supplies from China, even as Beijing added 20 Japanese firms to a dual-use export control list this week, though Panasonic was not among those targeted.
