GE Vernova and Hitachi Win NRC Construction Permit for New Reactor Design
GE Vernova and Hitachi have secured a construction permit from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a new reactor design, allowing the partners to begin licensed construction activities tied specifically to the advanced nuclear reactor project. The NRC approval confirms the reactor design meets current US regulatory requirements for safety and construction readiness. The permit adds nuclear hardware and long-cycle reactor work to GE Vernova's existing power equipment and services footprint, which already spans generation, grid hardware, and electricity storage across the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The company's narrative leans on higher margin power and grid projects backed by recurring service contracts, and the permit ties that story directly to US regulators. Nuclear projects nonetheless add long-duration, lumpy exposure to a business already sensitive to big contracts, permitting cycles, and potential policy shifts, with any delay, redesign, or new safety requirement feeding into project timing and cash conversion.

Tobu Railway launches Tokyo's first walk-through facial recognition gates at Ikebukuro and Kamitabashi stations
On July 15, 2026, Tobu Railway began service for Tokyo's first "walk-through facial recognition gates" at Ikebukuro and Kamitabashi stations on the Tojo Line. The service is available to passengers holding PASMO commuter passes for sections including the two stations. The gates utilize the biometric authentication service "SAKULaLa," developed jointly with Hitachi, where cameras installed on the automatic ticket gates recognize faces to verify identity, allowing passengers to pass without stopping. Tobu Railway had previously introduced the system at Tobu Utsunomiya Station in May 2026, and for these two stations, existing automatic ticket gates were modified to accommodate the system. To expand the number of stations with the system, the company has collaborated with OMRON Social Solutions, Nippon Signal, and Toshiba to enhance the versatility of the facial recognition system. On the security front, the system combines Hitachi's "PBI" technology with Panasonic Connect's facial recognition technology, storing biometric information in the cloud in a form that cannot be restored, and generating and deleting secret keys each time. Ikebukuro Station, with an average of about 420,000 users per day, is the company's largest station and includes commercial facilities, making it a model case for the implementation.

Face recognition 'face pass' services expand, raising privacy concerns
Face recognition 'face pass' services are gradually expanding at station ticket gates, supermarket payments, and baseball games. Trial Holdings has introduced a payment service using NEC's face recognition technology at 15 stores in Tokyo and Fukuoka Prefecture, and at Yomiuri Giants games at Tokyo Dome, face pass entry and hands-free payment at some shops using Panasonic Connect technology have become possible. Hitachi and Tobu Railway have introduced face recognition ticket gates at Ikebukuro Station on the Tobu Tojo Line and plan to make them usable for payments at nearby commercial facilities. Panasonic Connect evangelist Kunio Furuta expects the face recognition market to grow from 55.7 billion yen last year to around 130 billion yen by 2030. Meanwhile, the ID Authentication Technology Promotion Association has pointed out concerns about tracking user behavior and is urging businesses to operate carefully to avoid privacy violations.

Business Leaders Voice Concerns Over Trump Administration's New Tariffs
Japanese business leaders have voiced a series of concerns over the new tariff measures on Japan announced by the U.S. government, citing the impact on the global economy and the lack of predictability. Nippon Steel Chairman Eiji Hashimoto expressed dissatisfaction regarding the company's investment plan of over 2 trillion yen in the acquired U.S. Steel, calling the tariffs somewhat unreasonable and a major blow to global manufacturing. The new tariffs replace a temporary measure that was invalidated by a court ruling on reciprocal tariffs, and they apply a maximum total rate of 12.5 percent when combined with existing tariffs, citing deficiencies in the ban on imports of forced-labor products. Fujitsu President Takahito Tokita pointed out that policies are constantly changing and stressed the need to build resilience to adapt to such changes. Hitachi Chairman Toshiaki Higashihara said there would be no major impact due to the company's region-specific supply chains, while Sumitomo Corporation Chairman Masayuki Hyodo commented on the 550 billion dollar Japan-U.S. investment agreement, stating that it is the role of the business community to ensure it benefits both countries.

Ikebukuro Station Now Allows Hands-Free Gate Passage with Hitachi and Tobu Face Recognition System
Hitachi and Tobu Railway, among others, launched a face recognition system at the ticket gates of Ikebukuro Station on the Tobu Tojo Line on the 15th. By registering facial data and commuter pass information in advance, passengers can pass through the gates hands-free. This is the first deployment at a major terminal station in Tokyo, and for now it is limited to travel between Kami-Itabashi Station and Ikebukuro Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. The system was jointly developed with three ticket gate manufacturers including Toshiba, as well as Panasonic Connect, and can be built by adding cameras to existing gates, so expansion to other railway companies is also under consideration. The partners also aim to promote it as a face recognition payment service at commercial facilities around Ikebukuro Station.

Hitachi completes ¥100 billion share buyback in 2026
Hitachi completed a share repurchase of 20,346,300 shares, approximately 0.45% of its stock, for ¥99,999.58 million between April 27 and June 30, 2026. The buyback is part of management's focus on higher-value, growth-oriented businesses, alongside fresh investments in US grid infrastructure and AI-ready data platforms. The completed buyback is relatively modest against Hitachi's market value and does not materially shift the near-term balance between funding growth and the risk of heavy capex and M&A not earning adequate returns. The recent expansion of Hitachi Energy's US transformer facility ties directly into that capex risk, committing more capital to power grid capacity at a time when returns will depend on how demand and costs evolve. Hitachi's narrative projects ¥12,835.0 billion revenue and ¥1,196.6 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 6.6% yearly revenue growth and roughly a ¥394.2 billion earnings increase from ¥802.4 billion today.
Hitachi Stock May Still Be Undervalued by 17.4% Based on DCF Analysis
Hitachi's stock may still be undervalued, with a discounted cash flow model estimating an intrinsic value of ¥5,621 per share compared to the current price near ¥4,642, implying a 17.4% discount. The company generated trailing twelve-month free cash flow of about ¥1.22 trillion, and the model assumes continued cash flow growth. On an earnings basis, Hitachi trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 26.0 times, below a fair P/E estimate of 33.7 times, also suggesting undervaluation. However, broader valuation checks are mixed, with the stock screening as undervalued in only three of six tests. Recent developments include Hitachi Vantara's role in unstructured data management, Hitachi Energy's investment in a new US power transformer facility, and a partial exit from Astemo, which carry both growth potential and execution risks.
