JR Central to Compensate Under National Standards for Water Level Drop at Gifu Linear Construction Site

JR Central said on the 14th that it will compensate in line with national standards over the problem of well water levels dropping around the excavation site of the Hiyoshi Tunnel on the Linear Chuo Shinkansen in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture. For the wells and other facilities the company has been drilling and providing as alternatives, it will pay in a lump sum the increased maintenance and management costs compared with before, covering 30 years' worth. For defects in homes and other structures caused by ground subsidence, the company will confirm the situation and carry out repairs at its own expense. Until now, JR Central has installed new wells to replace those rendered unusable by the water level drop and has switched users to public water supplies, with the company provisionally bearing the increased maintenance and management costs such as electricity charges. After the tunnel excavation work is completed, the company will hand over the wells and pay compensation to the small-scale water supply associations and individuals.

Shinkansen Gets Private Rooms for First Time in 23 Years, Top-Class 'Supreme Class' Debuts in October

Central Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company will begin offering top-class private rooms called 'Supreme Class' on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines starting in October. This marks the first introduction of private rooms on the Tokaido Shinkansen since the retirement of the 100 Series trains 23 years ago, aiming to provide a premium service that surpasses Green Car. Two-person private rooms will be installed in Car 7, featuring reclining seats and a sofa, with a space equivalent to three Green Car seats. A one-way fare between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka will be 60,790 yen per adult, which is 41,400 yen more than Green Car. Fully private single rooms will be set up in Car 10, equipped with an electronic lock door and offering drinks and snacks from along the railway line. The former 100 Series private rooms lacked adjustable lighting and air conditioning, but as travel demand diversifies in the wake of the pandemic, semi-private rooms are also planned for the next fiscal year. Senior researcher Kazuhiro Fukushima of the private think tank Sompo Institute Plus analyzes that this is an experiment to explore new roles for the Shinkansen as high-speed customers shift to the maglev Chuo Shinkansen after its opening. East Japan Railway Company is also moving to propose travel where the journey itself is the purpose, with plans to operate the limited express train 'Luna Azure' including nighttime runs from the next fiscal year.

Linear Chuo Shinkansen: Shizuoka Section Construction Approved, but Total Project Cost Swells to 11 Trillion Yen

Shizuoka Governor Yasutomo Suzuki has approved the start of construction on the Shizuoka section of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen, which is being developed by Central Japan Railway Company. The Shizuoka section is the biggest challenge on the Tokyo Shinagawa to Nagoya route, and even if construction begins within the year, the opening is expected to be pushed back to 2036 or later. Due to soaring prices and the difficulty of the construction, the total project cost was revised from the initial 5.5 trillion yen to 11 trillion yen as of last October. Central Japan Railway Company President Shunsuke Niwa stated, 'We will proceed with preparations so that we can start work as soon as possible,' but the business environment is becoming increasingly severe due to labor shortages and rising interest rates, leaving concerns about further cost overruns and construction delays.
