JR East to Convert Company Housing into Condominiums

JR East President Yoichi Kisei announced at a regular press conference on the 8th that the company will abolish its company housing and convert it into condominiums and other properties. The company and Itochu Corporation have agreed to establish a new real estate company around October, which will promote the utilization of these properties. Through the development and conversion of company housing sites, the company expects to generate approximately 150 billion yen in revenue from its real estate business by fiscal 2031. Kisei stated, "The company housing we are abolishing is a valuable asset, and we want to create new revenue value with our own hands," also mentioning conversion to rental housing and sales as means of monetization. Since the maximum period for employees to reside in company housing is set at 15 years, some measures will be taken for employees who leave the housing before their period expires.

Seishun 18 Ticket sales plunge to 240,000 as rule changes accelerate user exodus

Sales of the Seishun 18 Ticket in fiscal 2025 fell to approximately 240,000, dropping below the pandemic-hit fiscal 2020 level, according to an inquiry with JR Kyushu. After recovering to 620,000 in fiscal 2023, sales plummeted to 420,000 in fiscal 2024 and 240,000 in fiscal 2025, with the drastic revision of usage conditions from winter 2024 seen as the main cause. The changes restricted use to five or three consecutive days and prohibited sharing among multiple people. JR East cited compatibility with automatic ticket gates as the reason, but user backlash has been strong. An online petition calling for a return to the previous system gathered 33,946 signatures, yet JR East refused to accept it. Economic journalist Izumi Kushida points to a gap between the needs perceived by the JR Group and actual user needs, warning that this could undermine the ticket's role in cultivating future rail passengers.

Shinkansen Gets Private Rooms for First Time in 23 Years, Top-Class 'Supreme Class' Debuts in October

Central Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company will begin offering top-class private rooms called 'Supreme Class' on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines starting in October. This marks the first introduction of private rooms on the Tokaido Shinkansen since the retirement of the 100 Series trains 23 years ago, aiming to provide a premium service that surpasses Green Car. Two-person private rooms will be installed in Car 7, featuring reclining seats and a sofa, with a space equivalent to three Green Car seats. A one-way fare between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka will be 60,790 yen per adult, which is 41,400 yen more than Green Car. Fully private single rooms will be set up in Car 10, equipped with an electronic lock door and offering drinks and snacks from along the railway line. The former 100 Series private rooms lacked adjustable lighting and air conditioning, but as travel demand diversifies in the wake of the pandemic, semi-private rooms are also planned for the next fiscal year. Senior researcher Kazuhiro Fukushima of the private think tank Sompo Institute Plus analyzes that this is an experiment to explore new roles for the Shinkansen as high-speed customers shift to the maglev Chuo Shinkansen after its opening. East Japan Railway Company is also moving to propose travel where the journey itself is the purpose, with plans to operate the limited express train 'Luna Azure' including nighttime runs from the next fiscal year.
