Advantest rides AI test boom, strong earnings, and record equipment demand

  • Strong earnings revive AI chip sentiment Advantest reported stronger-than-expected earnings, triggering renewed buying in AI-related stocks and lifting the Nikkei. The results eased fears that AI spending was slowing, showing test demand for AI chips remains robust and supporting the stock's price.

This is the period's biggest company-specific catalyst, directly driving Advantest shares and the market.

  • Alphabet capex lifts pick-and-shovel demand Alphabet raised its capital investment plan, boosting demand for semiconductor equipment and testing. Advantest gained as a pick-and-shovel stock, since more AI data-center spending means more chips and more testing equipment needed, supporting future revenue.

It explains a key demand driver behind Advantest's gains this period.

  • Equipment sales forecast to grow five years SEMI forecasts global chip equipment sales rising 23.2% in 2026 to $165.9 billion, with the semiconductor market breaking $1 trillion. Analysts cite Advantest's better-than-expected results as evidence the AI-driven upcycle continues, supporting the stock.

It gives the big-picture industry backdrop confirming Advantest's growth runway.

  • AI selloff and China model fears hit chips A broad AI and chip selloff hit Advantest, which fell about 7% in Japan as Kioxia and Tokyo Electron plunged. China's Moonshot unveiled a powerful open-weight AI model, reinforcing fears Chinese developers are advancing faster than expected, pressuring chip stocks.

It is the main counterweight this period, showing real risk to Advantest's rally.

Advantest gains on AI test demand, guidance raise; China and payback fears weigh

  • AI test demand and raised guidance Advantest benefits from strong demand for AI chip testing and raised its full-year net profit guidance to ¥660bn. The stock surged on robust earnings and SEMI's forecast of 23.2% equipment sales growth in 2026.

This is the main positive force behind the stock's performance in July.

  • Silicon photonics partnership and duopoly pricing power Advantest formed a silicon photonics partnership with OpenLight and holds duopoly pricing power with Teradyne, controlling 85–90% of the market. This strengthens its competitive position and pricing ability.

It highlights a new partnership and structural advantage supporting the stock.

  • AI-spending payback fears and China competition Fears that AI spending may not pay off triggered sharp selloffs, with the stock down 6–10% in July. China's chipmaking advances (Yuliangsheng, CXMT) threaten oversupply and competition, while Moonshot's open-weight AI model renewed concerns about faster Chinese progress.

These are the key risks that caused volatility and downward pressure.

  • Macro and cost pass-through worries Apple/Microsoft AI cost pass-through worries, Middle East tensions, and oil prices add further volatility. The stock remains highly sensitive to sentiment swings despite solid fundamentals.

These external factors contributed to price swings and investor uncertainty.

Japan Stocks Poised to Catch Up With Global AI Rally as Yen Steadies

Japanese stocks look set to catch up with a global AI-led rally when trading resumes Thursday, with Nikkei 225 futures in Osaka trading about 1.4% above Friday's settlement of the underlying gauge after the Silver Week holiday. Chip-equipment makers Tokyo Electron and Advantest are expected to be among the biggest winners, according to Hu You, a senior research analyst at iFast Financial in Singapore, who also flagged chip package substrate maker Ibiden and memory maker Kioxia Holdings. The yen traded around 157.28 per dollar in Tokyo after a four-day losing streak, its longest since late August, keeping traders alert to intervention risk following the Bank of Japan's Friday rate hike and its signal that further tightening remains possible. The BOJ move, which disappointed yen traders for its lack of clearer guidance, also leaves bond traders facing a volatile reopen, with iFast's Hu You saying the hike sets a higher floor for short-term rates and is fundamentally negative for front-end JGB prices. The global AI trade has gathered steam on early signs of success for Meta Platforms' new AI agent and Alibaba Group Holding's unveiling of what it calls China's most powerful AI chip, though overnight weakness in US equities and rising oil prices may temper the optimism.

Global semiconductor equipment sales set for five-year growth streak; sector surges in afternoon trading

On the afternoon of August 7, the semiconductor equipment sector saw a sudden surge. Xinqi Micro-Equipment hit the daily limit up, Lianxun Instruments soared over 7 percent, and Jingyi Equipment, Fuchuang Precision, and Helin Micro-Nano followed with gains. On the news front, SEMI forecasts that global semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales will grow for five consecutive years, reaching 165.9 billion US dollars in 2026, up 23.2 percent year-on-year, and potentially rising to 229.5 billion US dollars by 2028, an upward revision of nearly 30 percent from the end-2025 forecast. WSTS expects the global semiconductor market to reach 1.51 trillion US dollars in 2026, a staggering 90 percent year-on-year increase, breaking the trillion-dollar mark for the first time. Aijian Securities analysis suggests that AI capital expenditure is being transmitted along the industry chain to the equipment end. Lam Research estimates that every 100 billion US dollars in data center capital expenditure corresponds to roughly 9 to 10 billion US dollars in wafer fab equipment demand. Soochow Securities points out that HBM is driving a comprehensive upgrade in memory processes, with thin-film, etching, and metrology equipment together accounting for over 50 percent of memory equipment capital expenditure, and will fully benefit from this round of memory capacity expansion. South Korea's semiconductor exports in July surged 178.8 percent year-on-year to 41.01 billion US dollars, exceeding 40 billion US dollars for two consecutive months. GF Securities believes multiple clues confirm this high-boom cycle for semiconductor equipment, with test equipment giants like Teradyne and Advantest reporting better-than-expected results, further evidence that the AI-driven upcycle is likely to continue strengthening.

Seoul and Tokyo lead Asian plunge as tech stocks suffer fresh rout

South Korean and Japanese chip stocks led a sharp sell-off across Asian markets on Tuesday after a report that China's Shanghai Yuliangsheng had started mass production of a chipmaking technology long dominated by Dutch firm ASML. Seoul-listed SK hynix and Samsung each lost around a tenth of their value, dragging the Kospi index down more than eight percent and triggering a 20-minute circuit breaker, while Tokyo's Nikkei tanked more than four percent as Kioxia shed 15 percent and Advantest and Tokyo Electron dived 10 percent. The losses extended a global tech rout that saw the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index drop 2.2 percent overnight, with Sandisk down 11 percent and AMD and Nvidia off around five percent. The AI trade was already under pressure from concerns over massive investments and stretched valuations, though demand for high-bandwidth memory remains strong and hyperscalers have not yet cut capital expenditure plans. The sell-off overshadowed renewed optimism over the US-Iran crisis, where hopes for a diplomatic deal sent oil prices sharply lower, with Brent losing more than eight percent on Monday.

Nikkei 225 and KOSPI correlation strengthens, driven by shared AI and semiconductor themes

The correlation between the Nikkei 225 and South Korea's KOSPI index has been strengthening. Both indices share a common feature in that AI and semiconductor stocks, particularly memory-related names, carry significant weight. KOSPI is structured in such a way that it could almost be called a semiconductor memory index, as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix alone account for more than half of its total market capitalization. The Nikkei 225 is also heavily influenced by semiconductor-related stocks such as Kioxia Holdings, Tokyo Electron, and Advantest, making it increasingly susceptible to KOSPI's price movements. Recently, KOSPI's decline has been exacerbated by selling after SK Hynix's ADR listing, concerns over next-generation HBM4 shipments, caution about future oversupply, as well as the unwinding of margin trading and leveraged ETFs in the Korean market, leading to frequent circuit breaker triggers. The Nikkei 225 has been caught up in this rough price action driven by supply and demand factors to some extent, but as the earnings season gets into full swing and attention shifts to fundamentals, stock selection is expected to progress. In the short term, this presents a buying opportunity on dips for AI and semiconductor stocks, but many remain cautious, and the current phase calls for flexible diversification combining high-dividend stocks, domestic demand and infrastructure plays, and TOPIX ETFs.

Japanese Stocks Rebound, Supported by US Semiconductor Gains; Bonds Fall on Higher Oil Prices, Yen Edges Up

Japanese stocks rebounded on the 9th, with buying dominating as investors took heart from the previous day's rally in US semiconductor shares. Tokyo Electron and Advantest were among those attracting purchases. Takashi Ito, senior strategist at Nomura Securities, noted that while there is caution over the Middle East situation, the market is not in a phase of wholesale retreat from equities, and the logic of continuing to invest in AI and semiconductors, which offer high long-term returns, is at work. Meanwhile, bonds fell under pressure from higher crude oil prices and rising long-term US interest rates, with the yield on newly issued 10-year Japanese government bonds climbing to 2.88%, marking a fresh multi-day high not seen since 1996. The yen edged up slightly against the dollar to the lower 162 range, as wariness of yen-buying intervention by the currency authorities prompted short-covering with the dollar-yen pair nearing the 162.84 level hit on the 1st, its weakest in about 40 years.

Nikkei Rebounds After Four Days, AI and Semiconductor Stocks Bought Back

The Nikkei Stock Average rebounded after four days, closing at 67,743.85 yen, up 1.38% from the previous trading day. Following the firm performance of semiconductor-related stocks in the U.S. market the day before, AI and semiconductor-related shares such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron attracted buying and led the market higher. Reports that China plans to allow limited purchases of Nvidia's AI semiconductor H200, along with Meta Platforms' plan to build a large-scale data center in Canada, provided support. On the other hand, some cyclical stocks such as automobiles and rubber products were weak amid caution over the Middle East situation and higher crude oil prices, with 20 of the 33 sectors on the Tokyo Stock Exchange declining. Additionally, the Nikkei's gains stalled after an initial round of buying due to caution over selling to raise cash for ETF distributions scheduled for tomorrow.

Advantest Stock Appears Fairly Valued After Five-Year Run

Advantest stock appears roughly fairly valued after a five-year run that returned approximately 12.9 times, with shares around ¥32,000. The company trades at about 61.8 times earnings, above the semiconductor industry average of roughly 27.1 times and a peer group average around 55.3 times, but only modestly above a fair P/E of 57.7 times. A new partnership with OpenLight on silicon photonics test solutions supports expectations around AI and high-performance computing demand, though high growth assumptions leave little room if adoption slows. Broader valuation checks score 0 out of 6, suggesting no clear bargain, while community views diverge between a bull case seeing 22% upside and a bear case flagging 39% overvaluation risk tied to rapid capacity expansion.

Teradyne seen as AI infrastructure compounder with duopoly pricing power

A bullish thesis on Teradyne, Inc. argues the company is being re-rated from a cyclical capital equipment business to an AI infrastructure compounder, driven by rising test intensity per chip and expanding semiconductor complexity. AI-related revenue now represents nearly 70 percent of total sales, with the company delivering its strongest quarter in history at $1.28 billion revenue and 87 percent year-over-year growth. Teradyne operates in a structurally consolidated automated test equipment duopoly with Advantest, collectively controlling roughly 85 to 90 percent of the market, which supports strong pricing power and high returns on capital. Growth is supported by multi-vector exposure across custom ASICs, HBM memory testing, merchant GPU dual sourcing, and silicon photonics, all of which structurally increase test intensity per wafer. The Robotics segment and industrial automation exposure provide additional optionality, while a healthy balance sheet and active share repurchases reinforce long-term shareholder value creation.
