Smart Buildings & Connected Lighting

Buildings worldwide eat nearly a third of all the energy on Earth, yet most of them are still "dumb" — running the AC for a whole floor when three people are sitting there, leaving the lights on in empty rooms. This lesson is about giving a building "senses" and a "brain": sensors all over the ceiling plus a building management system (BMS) that tells the lights and AC to adjust themselves to people and sunlight — cutting the power bill in half, and turning every light bulb into a data point for the building.

Siemens ranks energy efficiency first as a global corporate infrastructure goal

Siemens has released the Siemens Infrastructure Transition Monitor 2025, an in-depth edition focused on buildings, titled Inside Smarter Buildings, which surveyed the views of 1,400 executives from leading organizations across a wide range of industries worldwide. The findings show that energy efficiency in buildings has jumped from seventh place in 2023 to first place in 2025, amid persistent cost concerns that remain a major obstacle. The report states that more than half of organizations plan to increase investment in energy efficiency, 57%, smart building technology, 55%, and the shift to electrification, 54%. Meanwhile, as many as 60% of executives in the commercial real estate sector consider decarbonization too costly, higher than the overall average across all sectors of 49%, and only 33% of executives in the real estate sector say their organizations have sufficient access to funding for decarbonization, below the overall average of 47%. On retrofitting existing buildings, the current global rate remains below 1% per year, far from the more than 2% per year that the International Energy Agency's Net Zero by 2050 plan says is necessary. The Energy-as-a-Service model is becoming a solution that helps convert large capital budgets, or CapEx, into usage-based expenses, or OpEx. Digitalization also remains a key mechanism, with more than half of respondents believing digital tools have high potential to reduce costs, 56%, and cut greenhouse gas emissions, 53%, while 54% say their organizations are ready to adopt automation systems in buildings.

LTS eyes 60 million baht backlog, full recognition this year

Light Up Total Solution Public Company Limited, or LTS, expects to fully recognise 100% of its backlog, worth approximately 60 million baht, within this year, according to Chief Executive Officer Phat Trasophosit. Third-quarter 2026 results remained steady from the second quarter, when the company posted a profit of 7.5 million baht and revenue of 132 million baht, because the third quarter was mainly a preparation period. The company is preparing to bid on three to four new projects with a combined value in the hundreds of millions of baht, with contracts expected to be signed in the fourth quarter of 2026 and some revenue, roughly 40 million baht, potentially recognised then. The remainder will begin to be recognised in the first or second quarter of 2027. The company puts its chances of winning the work at about 70%, citing its expertise and ready qualifications, and therefore expects 2027 results to grow by leaps and bounds, driven by government funding to accelerate the switch to energy-saving LED lighting in public areas. The company is also looking at one or two opportunities related to data centres, both in the form of equipment leasing and system testing work, though there is no clear timeline yet because it must wait for contracts with clients and several items of equipment are in short supply. At the same time, it plans to expand into AI Cloud rental services through the establishment of a joint venture, Noventrix Company Limited, in which the company will hold about 40%. The establishment has been pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2026 from an earlier target of completion within September, due to product supply shortages.

China unveils eight-agency action plan to boost smart homes with 250 billion yuan injection

China has launched an action plan to promote consumption of smart home products, aiming to increase the diversity of usage scenarios and expand the supply of high-quality goods. The plan was issued by eight government agencies, including the Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It sets out seven major measures covering the expansion of high-quality smart home supply, improvement of the standards system, support for consumption, development of products suited to the elderly, organisation of recycling service chains for used household goods, optimisation of community services, and strengthening of financial and budgetary support. The plan also calls for supporting the retrofitting of homes for the elderly and the upgrading of old homes into smart homes. Under the 2026 trade-in policy for consumer goods, local governments have been given greater flexibility in designing subsidy programmes, with the central government planning to allocate 250 billion yuan, or 36.93 billion US dollars, from ultra-long special treasury bonds to support such projects nationwide.

Interior Ministry proposes 75 billion baht loan for rooftop solar on 1.5 million households

The Ministry of Interior submitted its household rooftop solar installation programme for consideration by the committee vetting spending under the emergency loan decree yesterday, September 11, with Lavaron Sangsnit, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance, chairing the committee. Deputy Interior Minister Phonphir Souvannachavi said the programme will provide a subsidy of 50,000 baht per household for rooftop solar installation, covering 1.5 million households, up from an initial target of 1 million households, and is expected to use a credit line of up to 75 billion baht. On power purchases, no more than 5 kilowatts per household will be bought, after the electricity authority completes the switch to smart meters and two-way grid connections. Phonphir insisted the programme will involve no collusion or locking of specifications to favour any company, since it must go through the systems of the Provincial Electricity Authority and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority. Currently more than 2,300 companies are listed as certified installation specialists, and the electricity authority can handle roughly 300,000 to 400,000 rooftops itself, with private companies brought in to help install the rest.

Additionally, FPT is working with Amata Corporation to develop smart manufacturing and smart city systems in Amata's industrial estates in Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos, while also teaming up with SCG to develop next-generation AI for SCG's technology platform to reduce costs and boost factory efficiency across Southeast Asia. Trials have already begun in the cement business, with discussions underway to expand into chemicals and packaging. Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator Awards $750,000 to Four Energy Pilot Projects

The Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator, a $56 million technology program funded by Wells Fargo and co-administered by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratory of the Rockies, announced $750,000 in philanthropic funding for four organizations as part of its second Scalable Tech Track. The recipients are Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, National Grid, WinnCompanies, and Tucson Electric Power, each selected for pilot projects that address affordable housing and electrical grid demands with expert support from laboratory researchers. Habitat LA will integrate three technologies to streamline planning and building for wildfire-impacted communities, while National Grid will test an automated connection study tool to speed up grid connections. WinnCompanies will implement networked building controls to lower utility costs in multifamily affordable housing, and Tucson Electric Power will partner with the City of Tucson to build a microgrid-powered cooling center using artificial intelligence tools. The pilots are set to launch within six months, and five other cohort organizations that did not receive funding will join an adoption-ready network of Energy Champions.

Smart Building Data Drives Efficiency and Better Workplaces, Cisco Says

Cisco highlights that smart buildings can leverage workplace data to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance employee experience. Buildings accounted for about 28% of global energy consumption and 37% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2024, according to a 2026 UN Environment Programme report. Cisco worked with the U.S. General Services Administration on a Workplace Innovation Lab in Washington, D.C., where a renovated space was 73% more energy efficient than an unrenovated area and avoided five metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over one year. The company also points to its London office, designed with neuro-inclusivity in mind, as an example of using technology to support a more inclusive environment. Cisco emphasizes that connecting data from systems like HVAC, lighting, and collaboration tools enables better decisions about energy use, real estate, and employee experience.
