Motorola's record Q2 and D-Fend deal lift growth outlook

  • Record Q2 earnings beat and raised 2026 guidance Motorola reported Q2 revenue of $3.13 billion (up 13%) and adjusted EPS of $4.41, both well above forecasts. Management raised full-year revenue to ~$12.98 billion and EPS to $17.62–$17.72. The strong results and higher outlook signal accelerating demand, pushing the stock up 8%.

This is the core new event that directly drove the stock's jump and improves future earnings expectations.

  • Record $15.6 billion backlog shows strong future demand Motorola's backlog hit a record $15.6 billion, up 11% from a year ago. A backlog is orders already booked but not yet delivered, so it gives clear visibility into future revenue. This supports the bullish case and reduces uncertainty about growth.

Backlog is a key forward-looking indicator that explains why investors are optimistic beyond the current quarter.

  • D-Fend acquisition adds counter-drone technology Motorola agreed to buy D-Fend Solutions for $1.5 billion, gaining counter-drone tech used in airports, stadiums, and borders. This expands its public-safety portfolio and opens cross-selling opportunities. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026.

This is a new strategic acquisition that broadens Motorola's product offerings and potential revenue streams.

  • Strong cash flow and shareholder returns Operating cash flow jumped to $469 million from $272 million, and free cash flow nearly doubled to $414 million. Motorola returned $527 million to shareholders via dividends and buybacks. Healthy cash generation supports future investments and shareholder value.

Cash flow strength underpins the company's ability to fund growth and return capital, reinforcing the positive investment case.

Motorola Solutions Adds $2 Billion to Share Buyback Program

Motorola Solutions announced on September 9 that its Board of Directors approved a $2 billion expansion of its share repurchase program, lifting the company's cumulative repurchase authorization since July 2011 to $20 billion. The increase builds on a previously authorized $18 billion buyback plan that had roughly $0.6 billion in remaining capacity at the end of Q2 2026, and the updated program carries no fixed expiration date. The company generated $469 million in operating cash flow in Q2 2026, up $197 million year over year, alongside $414 million in free cash flow, while revenue rose 13% to $3.1 billion and non-GAAP EPS grew 24% to $4.41. Motorola also agreed in Q2 2026 to acquire counter-drone technology firm D-Fend Solutions for $1.5 billion, adding integration expenses that could temporarily pressure profitability. Management retains flexibility to repurchase shares through open-market or privately negotiated transactions, though the buyback must compete with debt reduction, elevated memory and component costs, and acquisition integration.

Fed Study Finds Only 14.8% of Firms Plan to Cut Prices After Tariff Refunds

A Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta survey found that most U.S. companies are keeping their tariff refunds rather than passing them to consumers, with only 14.8% intending to lower prices and 17.2% planning consumer rebates. The U.S. Treasury had issued nearly $135 billion in tariff refunds by mid-September, out of $166 billion collected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection from 330,000 importers before the Supreme Court declared President Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariffs illegal. Walmart received a $2.9 billion refund, Apple $2.2 billion, Nike $986 million, Target $994 million, Home Depot $730 million, Amazon $600 million, General Motors $500 million, TJX $331 million, Lowe's $80 million and Motorola $60 million. The survey found 75.2% of companies plan to hold onto their refunds, with 52.5% planning to invest in research and development or capital projects, and the refunds represent an average 1.7% of annual revenues. Walmart has pledged to use its refund to cut prices, while FedEx set up a tariff refund portal for eligible customers and UPS is also offering refunds to customers. Consumers have launched class-action lawsuits against companies including Nike, and Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are pressing the Trump administration to include consumer relief and plan refunds if the court strikes down new tariffs, including up to 12.5% tariffs on imports from 86 countries and 50% tariffs on a variety of Canadian products.

Motorola Solutions Beats Q2 Estimates, Raises Guidance

Motorola Solutions reported second quarter 2026 non-GAAP earnings of $4.41 per share, up 24% year over year, with revenue growing 13% and full-year guidance raised. Despite the strong results and the planned $1.5 billion acquisition of counter-drone specialist D-Fend Solutions, the stock has eased 0.9% over the past day and 3.7% over the past week, following a 6.8% one-month and 14.1% three-month gain. The company's three-year total shareholder return stands at 71.2%, while the five-year return is 104.6%, though the one-year return is slightly negative at 1.2%. The most followed narrative places Motorola Solutions' fair value at $521.82, above the last close of $468.05, suggesting a 10.3% undervaluation, but the current P/E of 36.3x exceeds both the US Communications industry average of 33.9x and a fair ratio of 27.6x. The company's shift toward software and recurring services, including command center and video solutions, is driving operating leverage and margin expansion, supported by strong hardware attachment rates and growing international SaaS deployments.

Carl Icahn Accused BlackRock of Protecting Bad CEOs, Citing $9 Billion Motorola Loss

Activist investor Carl Icahn criticized BlackRock and CEO Larry Fink at a 2015 conference, accusing the firm of using its $4.8 trillion in assets to shield underperforming corporate management from shareholder accountability. Icahn pointed to Motorola Solutions, which he said lost $9 billion in value before activists intervened, and claimed BlackRock refused to support his campaign to overhaul the company. He argued that Fink's annual letters to CEOs served as a sales pitch encouraging debt and acquisitions that benefited BlackRock's assets under management while protecting entrenched executives. Icahn called BlackRock's voting practices very dangerous for U.S. capital markets, though he emphasized personal respect for Fink. The dispute dated back to Icahn's 2007–2008 activist campaign at Motorola, where he sought governance changes and later pushed for a split that led to Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2011.
