For a decade, "flying taxis" were always a story about the future. But 2025–2026 is when they started getting their first real flight approvals — EHang is already selling tickets in China, and Joby and Archer are flight-testing with the FAA. Yet for an "electric air network" to actually work, four things have to come together at once — the aircraft, the parts supply chain, and landing pads + airspace management. This lesson is the map that strings the 5 categories together: why you can't skip any one of them, and where the money (and the risk) sits — being honest that the whole field is still "burning cash" and almost nobody has revenue yet.
Drone delivery scales fast while air taxis inch toward certification
▲
Drone delivery goes mainstream Amazon will expand Prime Air to nearly 500 US cities by year-end, Walmart nears 2 million deliveries with 270+ new sites planned for 2027, and DoorDash launched its own FAA-approved drone service. This is real, paying demand for cargo drones — the fastest-commercializing corner of the theme.
Biggest genuinely new force this period: delivery giants committing to scale, not pilots.
▲
Joby pulls ahead on certification and revenue Joby raised 2026 revenue guidance to $115–125 million, is 20% through the FAA's final certification stage with five aircraft flying, and expects first commercial passengers this year. It also bought defense firm Resonant Sciences for $500 million, adding revenue while it burns cash.
Shows the leading passenger air taxi moving from promises toward actual certification and sales.
▲
Hybrid-electric propulsion proves out GE's hybrid-electric testbed completed a high-altitude transatlantic flight, and Pratt & Whitney Canada began ground-testing a hybrid-electric system for a 2027 regional demonstrator targeting 30% fuel savings. This validates electric propulsion at airline altitudes, lifting hybrid-electric aircraft makers and their suppliers.
Technology proof points that widen the theme beyond short-range air taxis.
◆
Cash burn and certification gaps still bite Archer still lacks an FAA-conforming aircraft and trails Joby, with analysts projecting just $10 million of 2026 revenue against a near-$1 billion loss. Vertical Aerospace is raising about $100 million to fund certification only by 2029. The theme still depends on outside money and slow regulators.
The real counterweight: even with progress, most eVTOL makers are far from revenue and need constant funding.

eVTOL advances via partnerships and tech, but cash burn and delays persist
▲
Manufacturing and tech partnerships accelerate Toyota and Joby formed a manufacturing joint venture, while Archer unveiled an autonomous hybrid eVTOL with Anduril and absorbed Boeing's Wisk, Insitu, and SkyGrid. These deals aim to speed production and autonomy.
Shows major corporate partnerships driving the sector forward.
▲
Certification and commercial progress Joby began FAA-conforming flights and raised revenue guidance. GE flew hybrid-electric aircraft above 30,000 feet. Charging consortia formed, and drone delivery scaled via Amazon, Walmart, Uber-Zipline, and DoorDash.
Highlights concrete steps toward certification and commercial operations.
▼
Financial losses and cash burn continue Archer posted a $172.5 million quarterly loss with roughly $600 million annual cash burn and no FAA-conforming aircraft. Vertical Aerospace needs about $100 million to certify only by 2029.
Shows the heavy capital requirements and financial strain on key players.
▼
Regulatory delays and setbacks in China EHang was downgraded twice amid China's delays and tighter airspace rules after a crash. The sector still depends heavily on outside capital and slow regulators.
Illustrates regulatory hurdles and dependence on external funding.

SkyDrive to Study Turning Osaka's 146 Rooftop Emergency Landing Sites into eVTOL Vertiports
SkyDrive Inc. announced it will launch a feasibility study to repurpose the 146 existing rooftop emergency landing sites in Osaka City as eVTOL vertiports, part of the Cabinet Office's Super City Initiative. The project will be conducted with partners including Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City, Osaka Metro, Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., Chodai Co. Ltd., and the Organization of Airport Facilitation, with Osaka Metro serving as leader and SkyDrive handling survey design and Civil Aeronautics Act compliance. The study will verify surrounding airspace and obstacle limitation surfaces, survey wind and noise impacts from surrounding buildings, assess floor load capacities and charging infrastructure for repurposing the sites into alternate vertiports, and draft coexistence rules with authorities including the Osaka Municipal Fire Department. The 146 rooftop sites, marked with an H and required on buildings over 100 meters tall under local fire safety regulations, are currently limited to emergency disaster relief, and securing commercial passenger transport permits for them remains a significant regulatory challenge. SkyDrive and Osaka Metro are working toward commercial launch of eVTOL services by approximately 2028 within Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City, areas designated as Super City National Strategic Special Zones.

Joby Aviation Completes First Fully Autonomous 3,199-Mile Cross-Country Flight
Joby Aviation reported that its autonomy-equipped converted Cessna Caravan completed the first-ever fully autonomous 3,199-mile flight across the United States, remotely supervised from up to 2,323 miles away while autonomously handling taxi, takeoff, routing, and landing and integrating into busy airports. The cross-country mission, part of Joby's 2026 Electric Skies tour, highlights how the company's mature autonomy stack could underpin future freight, medical, disaster-response, and defense logistics operations on already-certified airframes. The milestone does not directly change the near-term certification catalyst for piloted air taxis or the key risk around elevated cash use and potential dilution. The announcement most connected to the milestone is Joby's recent S-1 filing for up to US$750 million of new equity, which underscores the near-term financing question around supporting certification, manufacturing ramp, and a broader autonomy roadmap. Joby's narrative projects $718.3 million revenue and $44.9 million earnings by 2029, requiring 83.5% yearly revenue growth and a $923.1 million earnings increase from -$878.2 million today, while more cautious analysts assumed about 141.5% annual revenue growth to roughly US$319.0 million by 2029.

Beijing bans owning and flying recreational drones after small plane hits CITIC Tower
Beijing issued official aviation safety regulations and guidance on Sunday, September 13, banning the public from owning or keeping drones and drone parts starting November 15. Residents have until November 14 to move drones out of Beijing, and the government will run a buyback program with a maximum subsidy of 3,000 yuan, about 447 dollars, per device. The measure is one of the strictest drone controls in the world, coming after a two-seat light aircraft struck the 109-story CITIC Tower in June, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people. The crash site was only a few kilometers from the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party and the residences of senior leaders. The new rules designate all of Beijing's airspace as controlled airspace, ban all forms of recreational flying, and officials will tighten control of airspace in and around the capital within a 300-kilometer radius. Although commercial flights are not affected, aircraft must have backup tracking systems and maintain two-way communication with air traffic controllers at all times. Reports say the pilot in the CITIC Tower incident deliberately flew the plane into the building after deviating from the designated flight path, and it is highly likely he ignored contact from air traffic controllers. The aircraft also nearly collided with a commercial plane. Meanwhile, shares of companies tied to China's low-altitude aviation industry fell in trading today, September 14. The US tech giant began a limited number of flights in February, allowing customers within a 7.5-mile radius of its County Durham site to receive certain items by drone, after announcing in January that Darlington would be its UK test centre, the first time Prime Air had expanded outside the USA. Following more than 500 flights and deliveries, Amazon is now seeking approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to cover the entire town, with Carbon saying the firm expects permission very soon and ultimately aims to expand the service to the whole of the UK. Eligible customers in Darlington can currently receive items within two hours if the package weighs less than 5lb, and staff at the site said their best delivery time so far is 39 minutes. Carbon said the size and weight limitations make about 68% of items people order eligible for drone delivery, and that Prime Air is currently included with an Amazon Prime membership at no additional delivery fee, though this will be evaluated as the service expands.

Poseidon Aerospace raises $60M ahead of first pilotless test flight
Poseidon Aerospace has closed a $60 million Series A funding round ahead of the first test flight of its uncrewed cargo plane, Egret, expected by the end of this year. The round was led by TQ Ventures, with new investments from Hanwha Asset Management, G Squared, and JAWS, and participation from existing backers Starship Ventures, Draper Associates, and Drover Ventures. The startup, founded by CEO David Zagaynov and Parker Tenney, previously secured $11 million in seed funding last year. Poseidon is developing fixed-wing aircraft powered by combustion engines, avoiding vertical takeoff and landing and electric or hydrogen powertrains, to lower cargo transport costs. The company targets defense and regional commercial cargo markets, planning to operate its own air cargo service rather than sell aircraft, and has expanded into a Navy hangar in Alameda, California, to build its full-size, 50-foot-wingspan aircraft.

Elon Musk Cheers Heart Aerospace's $5 Electric Flight, Urges Autonomy
Elon Musk has applauded Heart Aerospace's first flight of its X1 battery-electric demonstrator, which flew for 27 minutes on roughly $5 of electricity, and said an important next step is making it autonomous. The piloted X1 flew on August 12 from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate, climbing to 1,100 feet and delivering more than one megawatt of electric propulsion power. Heart Aerospace calls the X1 the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown, and founder and CEO Anders Forslund said the test demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner. The X1 supports development of the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft targeting 200 kilometers of all-electric range and up to 800 kilometers in hybrid operation, with type certification planned for 2031. Heart says the ES-30 could cut aircraft operating costs by more than 40 percent, and the company has attracted a $107 million investment from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, while Air Canada has ordered 30 ES-30 aircraft and invested $5 million in Heart Aerospace. Musk's call for autonomy goes beyond Heart's current roadmap, as the X1 flight was piloted and the ES-30 is presented as a crewed aircraft, and certification remains a hurdle, with the FAA describing a seven-phase process.

China Declares Low-Altitude Economy a National Strategy, Opening a New Investment Arena
China has declared the low-altitude economy a national strategy under the concept of New Productive Forces. By 2026, cargo drones, agricultural drones, and flying taxis (eVTOL) will begin commercial services in several provinces, creating enormous economic value from the supply chain in airspace below 1,000 meters. Two standout case studies are EHang Holdings, the first Chinese company to receive a Type Certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for commercial eVTOL, and Sichuan Jiuzhou, a state-owned enterprise that produces radar and ADS-B systems and controls air traffic infrastructure. Both companies have strong business moats in terms of regulation and national security. While the world is focused on the EV price war, a new battleground over China's skies has opened, and the winners will be those who secure licenses and infrastructure first.

EHang Holdings reported second-quarter revenue of RMB 77.9 million, down 31% year over year but up 203% sequentially, and withdrew its previous 2026 revenue guidance of RMB 600 million due to uncertainty over domestic passenger-carrying commercial approvals. The company delivered 35 EH216-S aircraft and one VT-35 during the quarter, with a gross margin of 61.2%, and held RMB 929.4 million in cash and investments as of June 30. Regulatory approval for passenger-carrying operations in Hefei has been delayed following a June accident involving a piloted light sport aircraft that was unrelated to EHang, prompting a more cautious approach from Chinese regulators. EHang expanded its footprint to 23 countries, is pursuing commercial operations in Thailand and Hong Kong, and expects non-passenger businesses such as aerial media, logistics, and firefighting to contribute more revenue in the second half. Adjusted operating loss narrowed to RMB 62 million from RMB 77.1 million in the first quarter, while adjusted net loss narrowed to RMB 58.5 million from RMB 75.6 million.
Boeing announced plans to sell three of its aerospace and electric vertical takeoff and landing businesses to Archer Aviation. In exchange for the businesses and a $55 million equity investment, Boeing will receive newly issued shares and warrants in Archer, giving it nearly 20% ownership after the deal closes later this year. Boeing retains rights to use Wisk's autonomous flight technology for its commercial and defense aircraft. The divestiture removes a distraction as Boeing works to restore its commercial aircraft business, recently marked by FAA approval of the 737 MAX 7. Boeing trades at about 77 times trailing earnings, a premium to GE Aerospace's 40 times, and management targets $10 billion in annual free cash flow, below the $14 billion generated in 2018.
Retail drone delivery shifts from pilots to hybrid fulfilment
Drone delivery is moving from pilot projects toward a credible role in retail fulfilment, with Amazon planning to expand Prime Air to nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026 and Walmart having completed more than one million drone deliveries. Walmart is working with Wing on a network of more than 270 locations planned for 2027, while DoorDash received FAA Part 135 air-carrier certification in July and launched DoorDash Air, and Uber has agreed to introduce Zipline drone delivery through Uber Eats with a target of one million drone deliveries a day by the end of 2029. The future is likely a hybrid model in which drones handle small, lightweight, time-sensitive purchases in selected suburban and metropolitan areas, while vans and couriers continue to serve larger or consolidated orders. Regulation remains a key gateway, with the FAA proposing a Beyond Visual Line of Sight framework in 2025 and the UK Civil Aviation Authority aiming to enable routine BVLOS operations through 2027, but cost competitiveness will depend heavily on utilisation, delivery density, and increasing autonomy.
EHang misses Q2 estimates and suspends 2026 revenue outlook
EHang reported second-quarter results that missed analyst expectations and withdrew its full-year 2026 revenue guidance. The company posted a GAAP loss of $0.24 per American depositary share, wider than the $0.13 loss analysts had forecast, while revenue fell 43.9% year over year to $11.5 million, missing estimates by $8.13 million. Deliveries included 36 eVTOL aircraft, down from 52 units a year earlier but up sharply from 4 units in the first quarter of 2026, along with 520 formation drones versus 1,000 in the prior quarter. Gross margin held relatively steady at 61.2%, and adjusted net loss widened to RMB58.5 million from RMB12.5 million a year ago. Citing recent industry safety incidents and a more cautious regulatory approach that has increased uncertainty around passenger commercial service approvals in China, EHang said it is suspending its previously issued full-year revenue outlook and will not provide replacement guidance at this time.
