Dollars running on a blockchain, government bonds turned into tokens, public companies that have become "bitcoin piggy banks," banks with not a single branch — these are all the same story: finance is moving onto programmable digital rails. This node is the map that ties the 8 categories of Digital Finance together — how they split into two big streams, who feeds whom, and where the real power and value actually pile up (each category has its own deep-dive chapter).

Why is Digital Finance & Tokenization moving?

Q2 2026
▼2▲1

Tokenization gains ground, but crypto market stress and competition bite

  • Tokenized securities gain real traction The SEC moved to allow tokenized US stocks, DTCC launched a pilot with BlackRock and Goldman, Securitize listed on the NYSE, and ICE-OKX built tokenized rails for 120 million users. This shows tokenization moving from concept to real-world use.

It highlights the main positive force driving digital finance forward this period.

  • Bitcoin slump triggers liquidations and treasury pain Bitcoin fell below $60,000, causing over $1 billion in forced selling and hurting companies that hold bitcoin as a treasury asset. Strategy sold bitcoin, faced a $13 billion unrealized loss, and diluted shareholders, undermining its 'never sell' promise.

It captures the major negative market force that pressured the sector.

  • Stablecoin leaders face new competition Circle and Tether, the top stablecoin issuers, are under threat from Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and the Open USD consortium. These new entrants could shift profits away from issuers to distributors, squeezing the incumbents' business model.

It shows a key competitive threat reshaping the stablecoin landscape.

  • Regulatory shifts create winners and losers EU MiCA rules forced unlicensed firms to wind down, risking Binance's Europe access, while CME sued the CFTC over perpetual futures. These moves show regulators tightening control, which could both legitimize and disrupt crypto businesses.

It reflects the regulatory forces that are both enabling and constraining the sector.

Regulators build tokenization rails as hacks and quantum risk weigh

  • Regulators build the rails for tokenized assets The ECB started Pontes, letting 13 banks settle tokenized assets in central-bank money, and the SEC proposed letting funds and advisers custody crypto. The Fed proposed full-reserve and capital rules for stablecoin issuers. Official plumbing, not pilots, is making tokenized markets investable.

Central-bank and SEC rulemaking is the period's biggest force pushing the theme up.

  • Tokenized stocks and stablecoin payments go live Coinbase's tokenized US stocks passed $1 billion of on-chain trading in a month, and Citi and Coinbase will let businesses accept stablecoin payments converted to fiat. Mastercard closed its BVNK purchase, and Open USD launched fee-free with 200-plus partners. Real usage is scaling.

Live volumes and bank partnerships show tokenization moving from promise to revenue.

  • Hacks and sanctions scrutiny erode trust September was 2026's worst month for crypto theft, over $766 million, led by Bitget's $388 million hack, which its CEO says is largely unrecoverable. A Senate report called Tether's USDT Iran's sanctions lifeline, and Kalshi and Polymarket face wash-trading scrutiny. Security and compliance risk still cap the theme.

Losses and enforcement risk are the main counterweight holding the theme back.

  • Quantum and Europe's payment politics add long-term risk EU watchdogs warned quantum computers could break blockchain cryptography, with about 6.9 million bitcoin exposed. Europe's banks and payment firms formed ENP to challenge Visa and Mastercard, and the digital euro pilot starts in 2027. These are slow-building threats to crypto security and card-rail economics.

New structural risks that could reshape security and competition in the theme.

Tokenization goes live, but US rules stall and hacks surge

  • Tokenization becomes real infrastructure SWIFT's 17-bank ledger, the UK's £33bn gilt push, and live projects from JPMorgan, DTCC, Visa and BlackRock show tokenization moving from tests to real-world use, with central bank plumbing from the ECB and Fed.

This is the core positive force: tokenization shifting from pilots to live infrastructure.

  • Regulation advances in Europe and Japan MiCA rules took effect, Japan legalized crypto ETFs, and Circle won OCC approval, giving digital assets clearer legal footing in major markets and opening the door to more mainstream investors.

Regulatory clarity is a key driver of institutional adoption and market legitimacy.

  • Bitcoin rally fades as treasury model cracks Bitcoin briefly topped $80,000 on ETF inflows, but then fell below $65,000. Strategy sold bitcoin, posted an $8.2bn loss, and paused buying, undermining the corporate treasury strategy that had supported prices.

This captures the major negative price and confidence shock during the quarter.

  • US crypto rules stall as hacks and sanctions bite The CLARITY Act failed 49-50, leaving US rules a patchwork until possibly 2030. September was 2026's worst hack month ($766M, led by Bitget), with Coldcard draining $100M, 100+ project shutdowns, North Korean hacks, and sanctions scrutiny on Binance and Tether.

This highlights the biggest regulatory setback and rising security/sanctions risks.

Metaplanet Ends Q3 With 44K BTC, Launches Net Interest Income Strategy

Metaplanet ended the third quarter with 44,000 Bitcoin after a net increase of 1,000 BTC, having sold 10,000 BTC and repurchased 11,000 crypto tokens during the period. The Japan-based crypto treasury company said the sale demonstrated its ability to convert Bitcoin into cash to meet financial obligations while keeping its long-term accumulation strategy intact. Under a revised capital allocation policy, Metaplanet plans to hold 85% to 90% of total assets in Bitcoin, with 10% to 15% allocated to strategic investments, and will use preferred stock, corporate bonds, and Bitcoin-collateralized financing while keeping crypto-related borrowing below roughly 10% of Bitcoin NAV. Its new net interest income strategy will invest in income-generating assets, including preferred securities issued by Bitcoin treasury companies, to fund further Bitcoin purchases. Metaplanet's Bitcoin income generation business produced ¥848 million, or $5.4 million, in third-quarter revenue, bringing nine-month revenue to ¥5.565 billion, or $35.4 million, with a third-quarter Bitcoin yield of 11.3% and an unchanged fiscal 2026 earnings forecast. Metaplanet stock traded about 3% higher at roughly $1.87, while Bitcoin traded near $86,000.

BACKSEAT Becomes First Domestic Crypto Exchange to Obtain SOC 2 Type 1 for Crypto Custody

Crypto asset exchange operator BACKSEAT announced on October 5 that it has obtained a SOC 2 Type 1 assurance report, dated the same day, following an independent third-party assessment of the security posture and internal controls of its custody business, which handles the safekeeping and management of crypto assets. According to the company, this is the first such acquisition by a domestic crypto asset exchange operator in Japan, and it described the move as part of preparations for the anticipated lifting of the ban on crypto asset ETFs in Japan. The assessment was based on the Trust Services Criteria, covering five areas: security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy. President Keiji Maeda explained that in the United States, Hong Kong, and elsewhere, major operators serving as custodians for ETFs have obtained SOC 2 reports, and said this acquisition marks a milestone in gaining objective third-party evaluation. The company said it has been preparing for the realization of domestic ETFs in anticipation of revisions to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act and other laws, and indicated it plans to provide custody services for a crypto asset market platform in which financial institutions and others will participate. Domestic crypto asset ETFs are expected to be permitted in January 2028.

AnyPay Achieves ISO/IEC 29110 Certification, Reinforcing Payment Technology Capabilities

AnyPay Co., Ltd., a fintech provider of electronic payment acceptance systems, has been certified under the ISO/IEC 29110-4-1:2018 standard. Santhawat Sinacharoen, Chairman of the Executive Board, stated that this marks another important step in elevating the organization's work processes and capabilities, particularly in the Payment Technology business, which must prioritize quality, accuracy, stability, and reliability of systems at every stage of service delivery. He noted that the standard is not merely a quality certification mark, but a guideline that helps establish a clear software development framework, covering planning, development, testing, management, and software delivery, while supporting systematic control and monitoring of work processes at each stage. Because the systems involve financial transactions and user data, adopting a software development process standard helps strengthen internal processes and supports building confidence among customers and business partners. Santhawat added that the company continues to develop its organizational standards continuously, alongside technology and security standards, in preparation for business expansion and to meet the demand for digital payments, which tends to grow steadily.

Tom Lee Predicts Ethereum Will Break $5,000 by Year-End, Eyes $60,000 Within a Few Years

Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat and chairman of Bitmine, said in an interview with Coinage that Ethereum will set a new all-time high and surge above $5,000 before the end of this year, and he sees the potential for it to reach $60,000 within the next few years, citing past price cycles in which it climbed from below $100 at the end of 2018 to nearly $4,900 in 2021. Lee noted that Ethereum has risen about 80% from its June low near $1,500 to around $2,700 by the end of September, even as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.25% on September 16, bringing the target range to 3.75%-4% by a 12-0 vote. On the institutional side, money has flowed in through spot Ether ETFs in the United States, with September 22 recording net inflows of $162.2 million, the third consecutive day of positive flows, as BlackRock's Ethereum fund took in $88.1 million and Fidelity's fund added $33.6 million. Lee also pointed to Robinhood's decision to build Robinhood Chain on Ethereum, which attracted as much as $2.1 billion in tokenized assets in its first two months, with $1.5 billion deposited into applications running on the network. At the same time, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued an innovation exemption on September 17 that allows certain tokenized versions of US-listed shares to trade on blockchain networks, after the draft Clarity Act failed to advance in the Senate by a vote of 49-50.

Mastercard Adds Probability Score to Agentic Commerce Trust Framework

Mastercard announced a probability score for AI-initiated transactions on September 30, positioning the capability inside its Agentic Commerce Trust Framework alongside Cloudflare for web and payment signal feeds and Skyfire for Know Your Agent verification. The probability score adds a second layer to the trust stack that agent commerce requires, evaluating each AI-initiated transaction dynamically to produce a trust score at the moment of execution rather than asking whether a transaction is legitimate. It builds on Skyfire's Know Your Agent framework, which Mastercard integrated earlier this year and which issues credentials and verifies agent identity at the point of transaction, a foundation also pursued by Baselayer, which raised $35 million to build Know Your Agent infrastructure. With the probability score in place, the trust infrastructure for agent commerce now has four visible layers: Know Your Agent identity verification, transaction-level probability scoring, payment execution with guardrails such as Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite and Visa's Intelligent Commerce, and consumer protection signals that remain nascent and fragmented.

Clearpool Approves XRPL Move and CPOOL to CLEAR Token Migration

Clearpool's community has approved, with 97.16% voting in favor, an expansion onto the XRP Ledger and the full migration of its native CPOOL token to a new asset, CLEAR. The institutional credit marketplace is bringing infrastructure to XRPL for financing working capital in the real fintech sector, with the platform providing technology rails and smart contracts, credit manager Cicada Partners auditing borrowers and underwriting risk, and Ripple joining the pools as a limited partner. Financing will be conducted exclusively in the dollar stablecoin RLUSD, giving the coin its first organic circulation among institutional investors, while custody provider Hex Trust will provide additional security and compliance bridges. The 1:1 token migration is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the initial supply of the new CLEAR asset rising to 1.125 billion tokens from CPOOL's previous supply of one billion, and 70% of the new supply distributed to current holders at launch to protect against dilution. Half of all fees collected by the platform will go to the open market to buy back and permanently burn CLEAR, and the product relies on the ledger's native standards XLS-65 and XLS-66, which are still being tested on Devnet awaiting approval from 80% of validators before full deployment on the XRPL mainnet.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Cheers Citi Stablecoin Payments Partnership

Coinbase Global CEO Brian Armstrong said Citigroup has partnered with Coinbase to enable stablecoin payments for large institutional clients, calling the tie-up proof the crypto giant "has come a long way" since 2012. Under the partnership, Citi's institutional clients, including multinational corporations, will be able to accept stablecoin payments from customers at checkout through the bank's merchant-processing services, while Coinbase customers can use Citi's banking capabilities and automatically convert incoming cash into stablecoins. Armstrong recalled that getting a bank to work with Coinbase at its founding was "nearly impossible," and thanked Citi for the arrangement. Stablecoins are a key and rapidly growing revenue component for Coinbase, which shares interest income on reserve assets backing USDC with Circle Internet Group and monetizes customer balances on its platform; USDC held in Coinbase products hit an all-time high of $20 billion in the second quarter, more than 30% of all USDC in circulation. Hitachi Launches Money Laundering Monitoring Service for Crypto Assets and Stablecoins

Hitachi announced on October 5 that it began offering its Digital Asset AML Platform, a service that monitors money laundering risks in transactions involving crypto assets and stablecoins, on October 1. The service is intended for use by financial institutions and crypto asset-related businesses. In July, Hitachi published the results of a proof of concept conducted with 17 companies, including financial institutions and crypto asset-related businesses, and announced plans to offer the service starting in October. The new service combines information suspected of links to crime or sanctions targets with analysis powered by AI and machine learning to identify signs of suspicious transactions. It evaluates the counterparty's wallet before a transaction, continuously monitors after the transaction for newly emerging risks, and can also check the circulation status of stablecoins and other assets after issuance. Because crypto assets can be transferred across multiple wallets and exchanges, information held by a single company alone may make it difficult to grasp suspicious fund movements. The new service also uses risk information gathered by each business to help detect signs that would be hard for any one company to find on its own.

Ether Surges 70% to Outpace Bitcoin in Q3, but Liquidity Plunges to 35-45% of Bitcoin's

Data from CoinDesk shows that Ether, or ETH, which trades at 2,714.94 dollars, outperformed Bitcoin, or BTC, which trades at 86,063.87 dollars, in the third quarter. Ether's price jumped 70% this quarter, beating Bitcoin's 42% return, but it became harder to trade because liquidity thinned out. Between July 6 and September 30, Ether's median daily market depth was only 35% to 45% of Bitcoin's, according to a CoinGecko report, compared with at least 60% in the same period last year, which CoinGecko called a complete decline from last year's figures. Ether had depth of 13 million dollars to 14 million dollars within 0.15% of the market price, and CoinGecko noted that ETH still retains reasonably decent liquidity within this band, with most exchanges maintaining depth of more than 1 million dollars on each side. The shrinking liquidity is not unique to Ether, because Solana, or SOL, a major rival, has also seen its overall liquidity contract sharply since 2025, with depth within 2% of the market price falling from about 28 million dollars on each side of the order book last year to about 20 million dollars this year. Meanwhile XRP, a cryptocurrency focused on payments, held steady with total depth of about 30 million dollars, but its order book leans toward the buy side, with nearly 18 million dollars in buy orders against 14 million dollars in sell orders. And although XRP's market value is about 40% larger than SOL's, it has less depth within 2% of the price, because SOL still trades 25% more than XRP on a typical day, CoinGecko said.

Bitcoin recovered to hold above the $85,000 level, trading at $85,276, up 0.83% over 24 hours, but still below the $86,000 level it touched before the jobs numbers were released. Under the new designation, payments in Japan to Garantex and other sanctioned parties will in principle require prior authorization. Cryptocurrency transfers are also covered by the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, and domestic crypto asset exchange operators are required to confirm in advance that a transfer is not related to a sanctioned party. Garantex is a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2019 that has mainly operated in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In April 2022, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated the exchange for sanctions, saying that more than 100 million dollars of transactions identified on Garantex were linked to parties involved in illicit activity and darknet markets. Japan said the latest measure is intended to keep pace with the response of major countries in light of the situation in Ukraine and to contribute to international efforts.

The main revenue structure still comes from the debt management and debt purchase business at around 90%, followed by debt collection services at around 4-5% and the business of supplying workers to factories at around 3%. ICBA Sues OCC Over Trust Bank Charters for Crypto Firms

The Independent Community Bankers of America, which represents the nation's community banks, sued the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in federal court in Washington, D.C., on October 2. The ICBA argues that the OCC's decision to grant national trust bank charters to cryptocurrency companies exceeds the authority Congress gave the agency. The suit, brought under the Administrative Procedure Act, seeks a declaration that a charter rule published in March 2026 and Interpretive Letter 1176 from 2021 are unlawful, and asks that they be vacated. According to the complaint, the OCC approved or conditionally approved 21 companies under the Trump administration, at least 13 of which were cryptocurrency firms. The ICBA also seeks to overturn the conditional approval granted to Protego Holdings in February 2026. Rebeca Romero Rainey, chief executive of the ICBA, said Congress did not create the trust charter as a back door for cryptocurrency companies seeking the credibility of a federal bank charter without the obligations of the Community Reinvestment Act, capital and liquidity standards, or deposit insurance. The OCC conditionally approved trust bank charters for companies including Ripple and Paxos in December 2025, and the outcome of the lawsuit could shape the path for cryptocurrency firms seeking to enter banking.

NEAR Intents: Roughly $3.8 Million Stolen Fully Returned

The roughly $3.8 million in funds stolen in a security breach at the cross-chain swap service NEAR Intents has been returned in full. NEAR Intents general manager Alex Shevchenko disclosed this on X on October 2. NEAR Intents detected the security breach on October 1 and temporarily suspended its service, and a preliminary investigation found that a flaw in the integration between Omni's deposit and withdrawal infrastructure and NEAR Intents' smart contract had led to the loss of about $3.8 million in user funds. The vulnerability was subsequently fixed, and the project said it would fully compensate the affected assets. Shevchenko said he had identified the person involved in the breach, provided multiple addresses for the return of the funds, and demanded their return within 48 hours, calling it the last chance to be treated as a responsible disclosure if the demand was met. On October 2, he posted on X that the roughly $3.8 million in stolen funds had been returned in full, saying the investigation was closed and urging people to use the bug bounty program rather than disrupt the service. ZachXBT, known for on-chain investigations, had pointed out that funds related to the incident were sent to the crypto exchange KuCoin and then bridged to Bitcoin. Meanwhile, details of how user funds will be restored and compensation carried out following the full return are not clear at this point.

Russia's Finance Ministry Makes First Salary Payments in Digital Rubles

Russia's Finance Ministry has begun paying staff salaries using the central bank digital currency known as the digital ruble. According to the ministry, some employees received their salaries in digital rubles for the first time on October 1, after opening digital ruble accounts on the Bank of Russia's platform. Whether to receive salaries in digital rubles is a voluntary choice made by each individual, and the ministry has not disclosed the number of employees involved or the total amount paid. In 2025, the Finance Ministry and the Federal Treasury piloted the use of the digital ruble for federal budget expenditures in Russia, making payments for salaries and scholarships and settling some government contracts, with total transactions amounting to just under 16 million rubles. From January 2026, digital ruble spending in the federal budget will no longer be limited to specific purposes, and the Bank of Russia and the Finance Ministry are jointly advancing its introduction into the budget process. The Bank of Russia positions the digital ruble as a "third form" of the national currency alongside cash and non-cash rubles. It began development in 2021, launched a pilot with real transactions in August 2023, and from September 1, 2026, broad use through major banks and retail companies got under way. Meanwhile, in April the European Union introduced measures as part of sanctions against Russia that prohibit involvement in transactions involving CBDCs such as the digital ruble and support for the development of related projects.

ECB Presents Three Models for Linking Central Bank Money to Tokenized Markets

The European Central Bank has set out three models for connecting central bank money to tokenized finance. ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel explained them on October 1 at "The Future of Money" conference in London, hosted by the Bank of England and others. The first model has the central bank directly issuing tokenized reserve deposits on a programmable ledger, making central bank money itself a native asset on a distributed ledger and using it to settle transactions in tokenized financial assets. The second model keeps existing central bank settlement systems in place while connecting to distributed ledger platforms through bridges or synchronization functions; the reserve deposits themselves are not tokenized, and funding and settlement of transactions on the ledger are carried out with conventional central bank money. In the third model, private intermediaries issue on-chain settlement tokens backed by reserve deposits held in an omnibus account at the central bank, and these tokens represent a claim on a private entity rather than a direct claim on the central bank. Schnabel outlined a vision in which tokenized finance preserves the current two-tier structure, keeping central bank money at the core of final settlement between financial institutions while commercial banks provide money and financial services to customers. On September 21, the ECB launched Pontes, which connects distributed ledger platforms with the existing TARGET Services to settle tokenized asset transactions in central bank money, and its long-term Appia project is examining future architectures for tokenized markets, including a unified ledger and multiple interconnected ledgers.

Franklin Templeton's Benji Fund Shares Approved as Bybit Collateral

Bybit announced a collaboration with Franklin Templeton that lets eligible traders use Benji-issued money market fund shares as off-exchange collateral on the crypto platform, extending the asset manager's push into tokenized finance. Franklin Templeton shares trade at US$32.81, with a year to date share price return of 37.86% and a 1-year total shareholder return of 44.68%, while shorter-term momentum has faded with the 30-day share price return down 5.53% and the 90-day share price return down 4.73%. The company is building on its earlier tokenized funds and blockchain enabled products, including the BENJI tokenized money fund, by adding 3.2b of digital asset AUM and acquiring 250 Digital, and by embedding tokenized funds into partner wallets such as MoonPay and Payward. A widely followed narrative pegs fair value at $35.50, above the last close of $32.81, while the stock trades at 22x earnings, below the US Capital Markets industry on 39.7x and peers at 35.9x but above the fair ratio of 12.8x. Franklin Templeton's story could still shift if fee pressure from large platforms intensifies or if integration across its expanded credit and digital franchises stumbles.

Corpay Adds AI Agents to Corpay Complete Platform

Corpay has expanded its Corpay Complete platform with several new AI agents that automate expense analysis, voice driven expense creation, virtual card issuance, and transaction coding across corporate, fleet, and vendor payments. The new tools are being rolled out to eligible Corpay Complete customers this month and are designed to centralize spend data, strengthen finance grade controls, and streamline workflows for finance teams. The rollout lands on top of earlier product updates in April and July, and comes as Corpay has raised its 2026 cash EPS guidance to $27.35 and plans to use divestiture proceeds for repurchases, alongside roughly $15b of available capital for buybacks and targeted corporate payments deals. Corpay closed at $394.60, while the most followed narrative pegs fair value at $461.00, implying 14.4% undervaluation, though on a P/E lens CPAY trades at 22.9x versus a US Diversified Financial industry average of 16.6x, a peer average of 16.9x, and a fair ratio of 16.8x. The company also faces pressure if the proposed US$100m U.S. Vehicle Payments settlement reshapes fuel card pricing or if organic growth underperforms current analyst assumptions.

US Senate Report: Over $34.6 Million in USDT Flowed Out of Iran-Linked Wallets

Democratic staff of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) of the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee published a report on September 28 examining Iran-linked funding networks. According to the report, of 39 wallets that Israel's National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF) designated for seizure in June 2023 as being tied to a figure involved in Hezbollah money laundering, Tether, the issuer of USDT, failed to freeze 34 of them until March 2024, and more than $34.6 million in crypto assets flowed out during that period. The investigation analyzed 846 wallets that US and Israeli authorities had identified as linked to the Iranian government or its proxy forces, and found that 84 percent of them transacted solely or almost solely in USDT. The report noted that relying only on freezes after designation cannot adequately prevent the outflow of funds, and called on stablecoin issuers to continuously monitor high-risk transactions by counterparties and their customers.

SEC Approves First 3x Leveraged Crypto ETPs as Bitcoin Holds Near $85,000

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday approved a Cboe BZX rule change allowing the exchange to list six triple-leveraged exchange-traded products from Volatility Shares, a first-of-its-kind step that could expand leveraged exposure to the world's largest cryptocurrency. The products target three times the daily performance of bitcoin, ether, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas, with the bitcoin and ether products providing leveraged exposure through futures rather than directly holding the cryptocurrencies. The decision does not mean the products are immediately available for trading, as registration requirements must still be completed before shares can be publicly offered. Bitcoin traded at $84,860.5 as of 01:29 ET, little changed over the past 24 hours, after briefly climbing above $87,000 earlier in the week. The approval adds another potential route for investors seeking cryptocurrency exposure after the SEC separately proposed changes to crypto custody rules this week, a proposal that was a major focus for Bitcoin markets on Friday.

DTCC Launches Tokenization Service as Wall Street Settlement Moves On-Chain

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation announced the DTCC tokenization service on May 4, 2026, a platform designed to bring Russell 1000 components, ETFs, and US Treasuries onto distributed ledgers. With over 50 firms including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Circle, Ondo, and Nasdaq participating, the service moved into limited production in July 2026 following a December 2025 SEC No-Action Letter. DTCC CEO Frank La Salla said tokenization will significantly change how markets operate by bringing new levels of liquidity, transparency, and efficiency to investors, while Brian Steele of the DTCC added that the service is designed to provide systemic scale where deep liquidity already lives. The infrastructure shift extends beyond the DTCC: Nasdaq secured SEC approval on March 18, 2026, under Release 34-105047, to facilitate tokenized settlement on the same order book, ticker, and CUSIP as traditional assets, NYSE Arca followed with rule change SR-NYSEARCA-2026-45 effective April 29, 2026, and the broader NYSE received approval for its own related filings on April 17, 2026. The SEC issued a five-year conditional innovation exemption on September 17, 2026, specifically for tokenized NMS stocks, while the CFTC clarified through Staff Letter 25-39 and an updated FAQ on September 24, 2026, that tokenized collateral may be used for derivatives margin. The tokenized asset market tracked by rwa.xyz stood at approximately $38.6 billion as of late September 2026, up from $2 billion in 2022, with tokenized Treasuries accounting for $14.7 billion to $15.65 billion of that total, led by BlackRock's BUIDL at $2.70 billion, Circle's USYC at $2.60 billion, and Ondo's USDY at $2.23 billion. A June 1, 2026, Citi report estimates a base case of $5.5 trillion in tokenized assets and $1.9 trillion in stablecoins by 2030, though it warns of a messy period in which tokenized and legacy systems operate side by side.

SoFi Migrates US$25 Billion Card Portfolio to Bank-Issued Stablecoin SoFiUSD

SoFi Technologies and Mastercard announced that stablecoin settlement went live across SoFi Bank, N.A.'s debit and credit card program, migrating its entire US$25.00 billion card portfolio to SoFiUSD. SoFiUSD is the first stablecoin issued by a nationally chartered bank on Mastercard's global network, positioning bank-issued stablecoins as an operational bridge between traditional payment rails and blockchain infrastructure. The move connects to SoFi's April 2026 launch of Big Business Banking, which lets enterprises manage fiat and crypto, mint and burn SoFiUSD, and access real time payments in a single bank interface. SoFi's narrative projects $7.7 billion revenue and $1.6 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 21.6% yearly revenue growth and an earnings increase of about $1.0 billion from $636.3 million today, while the most pessimistic analysts saw SoFi reaching only about US$6.0 billion revenue and US$1.0 billion earnings by 2029.

In addition to operating Kraken, Payward provides infrastructure through its Payward Services business for financial institutions, giving banks and exchanges the foundation to embed trading and settlement functions into their own services. BNY Mellon handles custody, administration and clearing for institutional investors, and on January 9 announced the launch of a tokenized deposit feature that reflects customer deposit balances on a blockchain. Payward announced a partnership with Nasdaq on March 9 to connect regulated stock markets with blockchain-based markets, and on September 10 it announced an expanded partnership including a $100 million investment agreement by Nasdaq's investment arm. According to CoinDesk, the proposed partnership with BNY may include elements similar to the infrastructure collaboration in Payward's recent agreement with Nasdaq, but the specific services and start date have not been disclosed.

Block's Cash App Launches Bitcoin Bonus Feature, Dorsey Urges Users to Opt In

Block CEO Jack Dorsey urged users on Wednesday to opt in to Cash App's new Bitcoin bonus feature, writing "turn it on" while quoting the platform's announcement. The feature lets users earn weekly rewards of up to 2% in BTC annually simply by holding Bitcoin in the app, with rewards funded directly and no lockup, lending, staking, or moving of users' BTC, keeping holdings available for withdrawal at any time. The bonuses are taxable, and users must opt in through the Bitcoin tab in the app to become eligible. Cash App serves as Block's primary consumer-focused ecosystem, and its second-quarter volume grew 17% year over year to $56.5 billion, driven by the Visa-powered Cash App Card and buy-now-pay-later credit, while Consumer Lending origination volume grew 59% year over year to $18.9 billion. Block has also placed a significant bet on Bitcoin's utility as a medium of exchange, deploying payment capabilities within its Square point-of-sale system.

Bitcoin Exchange Reserve Falls to 2023 Lows as Price Reclaims $87,000

Bitcoin exchange reserves have dropped to their lowest level since 2023, a decline driven by the asset's recent sharp price rally. After a brief recovery, Bitcoin reclaimed its previous high around $87,000, and that move has fueled demand for the asset. The shrinking reserve balance points to investors pulling coins off exchanges, a shift that tightens the supply available for trading.

Tether-backed Utexo to issue USDT on Bitcoin in October

CoinDesk reported on October 2 that Tether-backed Utexo plans to issue the US dollar-pegged stablecoin USDT on the Bitcoin network within October. The company's co-founder told CoinDesk that it has obtained a commercial license covering the issuance of USDT and the use of Tether's trademark. USDT was born on Bitcoin in 2014, but its main circulation base has since shifted to Ethereum and Tron, and this plan marks an effort to expand its use on Bitcoin again after more than a decade. Utexo is building a mechanism that allows USDT to be sent without disclosing transaction details, and plans to support direct exchange between Bitcoin and USDT as well as loans collateralized by Bitcoin, enabling exchanges, wallets, and payment providers to handle USDT on Bitcoin. The technology underpinning this mechanism is RGB, which handles assets on Bitcoin; it transmits and receives without placing transaction details on a public ledger, with the parties involved verifying them, which differs from Ethereum and Tron, where balance changes and transaction contents are recorded on a public ledger. Its approach to illicit use also differs from USDT on Ethereum: the co-founder explained that freezing assets in the same way is technically impossible, so the company will blacklist assets linked to sanctioned entities or illegal activity and share that information with exchanges and others, and blacklisted assets cannot be withdrawn as USDT to Ethereum or Tron. After issuance, the company plans to move forward with support for the Lightning Network.
