Insurance stocks fall across the board as floods drive claims higher; OIC orders payouts within 7 days
Insurance sector stocks fell across the board after flood conditions spread more widely in Bangkok, the surrounding provinces, and upcountry areas. Thai Wiwat Holdings, or TVH, dropped the most, down 7.02% to close at 10.60 baht, followed by Thai Reinsurance Life, or THREL, down 5.38% to close at 1.23 baht; Thai Reinsurance, or THRE, down 4.92% to close at 0.58 baht; Dhipaya Group Holdings, or TIPH, down 3.20% to close at 24.20 baht; and Muang Thai Insurance, or MTI, down 2.27% to close at 21.50 baht. Navakij Insurance, or NKI, rose 1.17% to close at 17.30 baht on turnover of just 10,000 baht, while BKI Holdings, or BKIH, closed at 386 baht, down 1 baht, or 0.26%. Dao Securities estimates that the floods will pressure claims liabilities in the fourth quarter of 2026, but will affect the SET Index only in the short term. CGS International Securities recommends delaying purchases and expects the situation to reach equilibrium within four to five days. At a meeting on September 28, 2026, the Office of the Insurance Commission, or OIC, represented by Deputy Secretary-General for Legal and Inspection Affairs Adisorn Phiphatworapong, together with the Thai General Insurance Association and the insurance business sector, resolved that companies must pay claims within seven days in cases of clear damage, including total loss. Microinsurance policies will pay the full sum insured of 10,000 baht; residential fire policies will pay an initial 20,000 baht, plus another 10,000 baht if flood coverage was purchased as an add-on. Shops with fire insurance or IAR policies that purchased additional flood coverage will receive an initial payment of 30,000 baht. Life insurance will extend the premium payment grace period by 60 days, and non-life insurance will extend the premium collection period by up to 90 to 180 days.
