Mitsui Chemicals' New President Satoshi Ichimura Discusses Petrochemical Restructuring and Growth Areas

Satoshi Ichimura, president of Mitsui Chemicals, has laid out a management policy centered on restructuring the petrochemical business and expanding growth areas in life and healthcare, mobility, and ICT. Ichimura, who took office as president in April 2026, said that after the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, the company set up an emergency response meeting in March, switched naphtha procurement to regions outside the Middle East, and kept operations going with information provided by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In petrochemicals, the company will consolidate ethylene production at a single plant in Chiba Prefecture in eastern Japan together with Idemitsu Kosan in 2027, and in western Japan will consolidate the plants of Asahi Kasei and Mitsubishi Chemical at its Osaka works into one. Overseas sales account for about half of the total, and roughly 70 percent of sales in the growth areas. In dental materials, the company decided in June to acquire Ultradent, a U.S. dental materials maker that is the world leader in whitening, for about 140 billion yen.

Idemitsu Kosan President Confirms Start of Saudi Crude Procurement via Suez Detour Route

Idemitsu Kosan President Noriaki Sakai confirmed on the 18th that the company has begun transporting Saudi Arabian crude oil via a detour route through Suez, as passage through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become difficult. Previously, shipments arrived in Japan in about 20 days, but the new route is said to take 50 to 60 days. While acknowledging higher costs, Sakai stressed, "We are confident that we can properly procure what is needed. There will be no major disruption on the procurement front." Idemitsu has not disclosed details of the alternative route, but supplier Saudi Aramco has since July been increasing supplies on a route from the Saudi port of Yanbu northward through the Red Sea, across the Mediterranean, and around the Cape of Good Hope. Sakai also said the company will expand use of North American crude, but he was negative about sharply reducing dependence on the Middle East, pointing out that Japanese refineries are equipped to process Middle Eastern crude, and that significantly increasing imports of US crude with different properties would require investment in refining facility upgrades. Regarding the 500 million dollar investment in MidOcean Energy, a British LNG business under US investment firm EIG announced in March, he said LNG was an important missing piece in the business portfolio and indicated a policy of entering the LNG sales business mainly in Japan. He also explained that there is interest from companies other than automakers in the commercialization of solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries being pursued jointly with Toyota Motor, and expressed a view that advances in drones and robots such as humanoids will drive replacement with solid-state batteries.

Japan's top three oil refiners swing to large profits in April–June quarter on Middle East conflict-driven crude price surge

The consolidated earnings for the April–June 2026 quarter are in for Japan's three major oil refiners, and all three posted substantial net profits. The effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the Middle East conflict that began in late February pushed up crude oil prices at the time of sale compared with procurement, boosting profits, and also generated inventory valuation gains. ENEOS Holdings and Cosmo Energy Holdings swung from net losses a year earlier to large net profits, while Idemitsu Kosan's net profit surged eightfold year on year.

Quaise Energy secures $134m for Project Obsidian

Quaise Energy has raised $134 million in the first close of its Series B financing to support construction of Project Obsidian, a commercial superhot geothermal power plant in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest expected to deliver electricity to the grid by 2030. The round was led by Prelude Ventures with strategic investments from Japanese energy companies JERA Co. and Idemitsu Kosan, and most existing investors including Safar Partners also participated. Project Obsidian, located on federal geothermal leases, is described as having gigawatt-scale potential and aims to help meet rising energy demand and transmission constraints in the Pacific Northwest. Quaise Energy develops utility-scale superhot geothermal energy using a millimetre wave drilling system originally developed at MIT, which can ablate rock at greater depths and temperatures than conventional equipment, potentially accessing subterranean temperatures between 300°C and 500°C worldwide. The technology was demonstrated in 2025 at a Texas field site where it drilled more than 100 meters through granite, and the company reports it is close to reaching a depth of 1 kilometer, which would be the deepest penetration ever achieved using millimetre wave or any non-contact drilling method. Quaise Energy expects to secure further equity and debt capital soon, alongside additional project-level financing being raised in parallel, and has secured $230 million in total funding to date.

Equinor submits environmental plan for Norway’s largest undeveloped oil discovery

Equinor has submitted a proposed environmental impact assessment program for the Wisting field in the Barents Sea, advancing the largest oil discovery on the Norwegian continental shelf yet to be developed. The field holds estimated recoverable volumes of nearly 500 million barrels of oil equivalent. The partners, including Aker BP, Petoro, and INPEX Idemitsu, have selected a floating production, storage and offloading vessel as the preferred development concept and will evaluate carbon capture and storage to reduce emissions. Plans to electrify the project from shore were dropped due to high costs and technical complexity. Further progress toward a potential final investment decision by year-end 2027 depends on improving the project's commercial viability.
