Morgan Stanley expands wealth and crypto, but private credit and valuation risks weigh

  • Wealth management and crypto expansion Morgan Stanley is pushing deeper into wealth management, real estate, and crypto, aiming for $10 trillion in wealth assets. It also launched new crypto ETFs and benefited from the SpaceX IPO.

This shows the main growth initiatives that could drive future revenue and investor optimism.

  • Capital returns after stress test Morgan Stanley passed the Fed stress test, raised its dividend by 15%, and reauthorized a $20 billion buyback. Investment banking also boomed, and new PMAX funds broadened private-market access.

These actions directly reward shareholders and signal financial strength, supporting the stock price.

  • Private credit liquidity strain Its $7 billion private credit fund capped withdrawals amid liquidity strain, and OpenAI's IPO delay removed expected fees. Rising equity funding costs could also pressure prime brokerage and trading revenue.

These are concrete setbacks that hurt earnings and investor confidence.

  • Oppenheimer downgrade on valuation Oppenheimer downgraded Morgan Stanley to Underperform, citing valuation and late-cycle concerns. This adds a cautious analyst view that could weigh on the stock.

A downgrade from a major analyst can influence investor sentiment and price.

MS eyes UBS merger, prediction-market first, and rate-hike tailwind

  • Reported UBS merger talks reshape the story Morgan Stanley is reportedly exploring a merger with UBS under Swiss regulatory pressure. A deal would add a big European wealth footprint, but a larger, more complex balance sheet could strain capital and distract management. The report cuts both ways for the stock.

A potential mega-merger is the single biggest new force on MS's outlook this period.

  • First major bank in prediction markets Morgan Stanley became the first major Wall Street bank to formally partner with prediction market platform NEXTPredict, acting as a named institutional collaborator. It fits MS's AI and private-markets push and could create new fee-based products, though it is unclear yet whether clients will pay enough.

A first-mover move into a new asset class is a fresh strategic driver for MS.

  • Fed rate hike lifts Wealth Management income The Fed's September hike to 3.75-4.00% could raise yields on client cash and loans, boosting Wealth Management net interest income. MS already posted 15% revenue growth and record net new assets in the first half. Higher deposit costs and softer lending demand are the main offsets.

A direct monetary-policy tailwind to MS's largest earnings engine is new this period.

  • Investment-banking recovery confirmed by Jefferies Jefferies reported record Q3 investment-banking revenue of $1.33 billion, up 17%, with advisory and equity underwriting both strong. That is an early signal the dealmaking recovery is intact ahead of MS's own October 14 earnings, supporting fee expectations.

A peer's record results give fresh evidence on the dealmaking cycle that drives MS's fees.

Morgan Stanley hits records on AI boom, but valuation and AI risks build

  • Record earnings and capital returns Morgan Stanley posted record quarterly revenue of $21.35 billion and earnings per share of $3.46, pulled in $148 billion in new wealth assets, raised its dividend 15%, and reauthorized a $20 billion buyback.

This shows the core financial performance and shareholder returns that drove the stock higher.

  • AI financing and IPO leadership The bank led AI infrastructure financing, including a $15 billion loan for Anthropic and a $1.5 trillion innovation initiative, and helped take AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Nscale public.

This highlights a major new revenue driver and franchise strength in AI-related deals.

  • Valuation and AI debt concerns Oppenheimer downgraded the stock on stretched valuations (17.72 P/E), Moody's warned that AI debt lacks a playbook, and Morgan Stanley's own research flagged a widening AI financing gap, raising worries about sustainability.

These are key new risks that could pressure the stock and temper the AI-driven optimism.

  • Reputational and competitive threats An IPO data leak exposed over 100 confidential deals, AI-agent competition intensified, reported UBS merger talks surfaced, and higher deposit costs plus softer lending added pressure on reputation, capital, and future mandates.

These operational and competitive issues could undermine trust and profitability going forward.

Amazon Sets Up $8 Billion Vehicle for Nvidia Grace Blackwell Chips

Amazon has established an $8 billion special purpose vehicle to buy and lease back Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips to AWS clients, an off balance sheet financing tool for AI hardware as cloud capital demands rise. Morgan Stanley has reinstated Nvidia as a Top Pick, citing its view on AI data center demand and capacity expansion. The Amazon vehicle and the Morgan Stanley call both sit inside a wider Nvidia AI infrastructure story, alongside Nvidia's own US$500 billion ecosystem financing plans. The structure lets AWS keep building AI capacity without stacking all the hardware on its own balance sheet, pointing to new funding structures that can support large orders as AI factories become more capital intensive across cloud and sovereign projects. The clearest early signal on whether the model scales would be other hyperscalers or sovereign AI buyers setting up similar chip vehicles that explicitly name Nvidia hardware, with disclosed sizes and timelines.

Berkshire Raises Lennar Stake to 11.2%, Buffett Back in World's Top 10 Billionaires

Berkshire Hathaway, under the leadership of Warren Buffett, has continued to increase its stake in Lennar Corporation, a major U.S. homebuilder and real estate developer, to 11.2%, a portfolio value of about 2.1 billion dollars, or roughly 75 billion baht. Documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission state that Berkshire bought 53.6 million dollars of Lennar Class A shares and 329,000 dollars of Class B shares, which carry extra-special voting rights, between Monday and Wednesday, bringing its total holding to 26.6 million shares, up from 5.4%, or 13.4 million shares worth 1.2 billion dollars, at the end of the second quarter. The pace of buying has begun to slow, averaging less than 18 million dollars a day through Wednesday, and no transactions are expected on Thursday. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley initiated coverage with an Underweight rating and a price target of 65 dollars per share, nearly 19% below the latest close of 79.81 dollars, amid 30-year fixed mortgage rates that have risen for six straight weeks to 7.30%, the highest since late 2023. On the wealth front, Warren Buffett has reclaimed his place as the world's 10th-richest person in Forbes magazine's rankings after overtaking Amancio Ortega, the founder of Inditex, the owner of the Zara brand. Forbes estimates Buffett's net worth at 143 billion dollars, above Ortega's 140 billion dollars, making Buffett the only person in the top 10 not from the technology sector. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranks them differently, estimating Ortega's fortune at 125 billion dollars in 15th place, with Jim Walton, a Walmart heir, in 11th place with 134 billion dollars.

Anthropic Invests $100 Million to Launch Claude Frontier Academy, Aiming to Train 10,000 AI Engineers

Anthropic announced a $100 million investment, or roughly 3.6 billion baht, to establish an artificial intelligence training institution called the Claude Frontier Academy, with the goal of cultivating 10,000 frontline hands-on engineers from companies in its Claude Partner Network and having them complete training by the end of 2027. The first group of participants includes software engineers from Accenture, Morgan Stanley, and Novo Nordisk. The curriculum begins with intensive simulations of enterprise technology deployments before moving into a residency program modeled on the teaching approach used in medical schools, and the first cohort of engineers is expected to receive official certification in early 2027. The move comes amid expectations that Anthropic will go public this year, with a target valuation of as much as $2 trillion, after Reuters previously reported, citing a leaked draft prospectus, that the company had revenue of nearly $4.6 billion last year but an operating loss of more than $8 billion.

Morgan Stanley Cuts Nike Price Target to 27 on Inventory Glut

Morgan Stanley cut its Nike price target to 27 from 31, with analyst Alex Straton saying the company's first quarter is likely this year's high watermark rather than the low. Straton, who went underweight on the stock late last year, said Nike's guidance embeds a high single digit sales decline and that reaching full-year targets requires both top-line and earnings trends to degrade from here. She attributed the pressure to excess inventory in North America and a similar dynamic in China, the two biggest sportswear markets in the world, compounded by a challenging macro backdrop. Straton flagged three problem areas for the company: Sportswear, which makes up almost two-thirds of the portfolio and roughly 30 billion dollars in revenue, the Jordan brand, and a material change in the China outlook. She said she has not seen the bottom in negative revisions and that Nike may face a shrink-to-grow story, with further de-rating possible if the company settles into a lower-growth, lower-margin multiple. Nike holds an investor day in November, where Straton said the company needs to clarify the right revenue size for Sportswear, Jordan and China before investors can gauge when growth and historical margins might return.

Nvidia Hits Record High on $150 Billion Buyback and Morgan Stanley Nod

Nvidia shares climbed more than 2.5% Friday to an intraday record, breaking above their previous all-time high as renewed optimism around artificial intelligence spending combined with the chipmaker's record share buyback authorization. The stock was last up 2.9% at $237.75, a fresh record for the first time since May, extending a rally that has lifted the shares roughly 27% this year. The move follows Nvidia's board authorization this week of an additional $150 billion for share repurchases, bringing its total remaining authorization to $235 billion through fiscal 2028, the largest such authorization in corporate history. Morgan Stanley reinforced the optimism Friday by reinstating Nvidia as its top semiconductor pick after meetings with CEO Jensen Huang and other executives, citing continued strength in AI demand and an expanding customer base. The firm also said the AI infrastructure bottleneck is shifting from semiconductor production toward data center land, power and financing, constraints it believes could favor Nvidia as customers seek to maximize computing output from limited electricity.

Fed Rate Hike May Lift Morgan Stanley Wealth Management NII

The Federal Reserve's September rate hike could provide another earnings tailwind for Morgan Stanley's Wealth Management business, with the 25-basis-point increase in the federal funds target range to 3.75-4.00% potentially supporting yields on client cash and lending balances and lifting net interest income. Morgan Stanley enters the higher-rate backdrop from a position of strength, as Wealth Management revenues rose 15% year over year to $17.4 billion in the first half of 2026 while net interest income increased 16% to $4.4 billion, and asset management revenues climbed 17% to $10.3 billion. Net new assets reached a record $266.5 billion during the period. Even before the Fed's September move, Morgan Stanley had expected a modest sequential rise in Wealth Management net interest income in the third quarter, with further improvement supported by loan growth and deposit mix. The benefits are unlikely to be entirely one-sided, however, since higher deposit costs could limit spread expansion and persistently elevated rates could soften lending demand and pressure equity and bond valuations. Among peers, JPMorgan's Asset & Wealth Management business posted first-half revenues up 15% year over year to $13.2 billion with assets under management of $5.14 trillion, up 18%, while Goldman Sachs' Asset & Wealth Management revenues rose 15% year over year to $8.7 billion even as private banking and lending revenues declined on a lower net interest margin tied to Marcus deposits.
MS · Monetary · Positive Fed's 25bp rate hike to 3.75-4.00% could support yields on client cash and lending balances, lifting Morgan Stanley Wealth Management net interest income.

Anthropic Study Says Robots Need 40 Years to Take 10% of Job Tasks

A new study from the AI company Anthropic suggests it will take 40 years for robots to replace just 10% of job tasks if robot prices decline along past trends, a timeline that clashes with the more bullish scenarios of Nvidia and Tesla. At CES in January 2026, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted a coming "ChatGPT moment" for robotics in the form of agents, self-driving cars, and humanoid robots, while Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company's Optimus robot will go on sale as early as next year and envisions a future where every household has a robot. A Morgan Stanley research report from 2025 forecasts that the market for humanoid robots could surpass $5 trillion by 2050, with adoption likely to accelerate in the late 2030s on improved tech, a friendlier regulatory environment, and popular support. The Anthropic report argues that beyond price, factors including capabilities, preferences, and regulations pose further barriers to robot automation, and Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk echoed that "even under aggressive projections, widespread physical labor displacement will take decades." The disparity underscores the tension between the rapid pace of software development and the slow progress of hardware, leaving open whether robots will become commoditized gadgets or premium products with constrained supply.

Microsoft stock surges 37.5%, best quarter in 28 years, adding $1 trillion in market value

Microsoft shares closed the July-September quarter up 37.5%, the biggest quarterly gain since 1998, adding $1 trillion to the company's market capitalization, according to Bloomberg. The main driver was the late-July earnings report, in which the Cloud business grew at its fastest pace in four years on strong demand for AI services, sending the stock up 16% in a single day, its best daily gain since October 2008, and adding about $450 billion to the company's market value. Among the big technology companies pouring money into AI, including Alphabet, Amazon and Meta Platforms, Microsoft is the only one whose free cash flow has not turned negative on an annualized basis. Meanwhile, of the 72 analysts tracked by Bloomberg, only 3 do not have a buy rating, and none recommend selling, with the average price target implying the stock could rise another 11% over the next 12 months. Adam Wood of Morgan Stanley estimates the stock could deliver a total return of about 20% over the coming year, and Wall Street expects revenue to rise about 18% in fiscal 2027 before accelerating to about 21% in fiscal 2029. Earnings per share are expected to rise about 11% in the current fiscal year, slowing from nearly 32% in fiscal 2026, before reaccelerating to nearly 19% in fiscal 2028 and about 21% in fiscal 2029.

Morgan Stanley Said to Explore Merger With UBS Under Swiss Pressure

Morgan Stanley is reportedly exploring a potential merger or combination with UBS AG under pressure from Swiss regulators, who are said to be urging UBS to reinforce its capital position and prompting discussions with several large foreign banks. Any Morgan Stanley and UBS tie-up would rank among the largest cross-border banking deals and could reshape global investment banking. Morgan Stanley, a US-based capital markets group with a market cap of about $304.1b, runs a securities and advisory franchise spanning the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and a UBS combination would add a deep European and cross-border wealth footprint that complements its existing US$10t in client assets. The report cuts both ways for the bank's Wealth Scale narrative: it reinforces the case for using surplus capital and regulatory headroom on selective acquisitions rather than only buybacks and organic projects, but a bigger, more complex balance sheet could pressure capital strength, invite fresh regulatory demands and distract from adviser retention amid poaching risk and fee pressure from passive products.
MS · Capital · Neutral Reported exploration of a merger/combination with UBS under Swiss regulatory pressure — a major M&A event that could reshape the bank but carries capital-strength and integration risks.

Morgan Stanley IM to Liquidate Calvert US Large-Cap Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Index ETF

Morgan Stanley Investment Management announced the upcoming liquidation of the Calvert US Large-Cap Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Index ETF, ticker CDEI, a series of Morgan Stanley ETF Trust, after the Trust's Board approved a Plan of Liquidation. Under the plan, the fund's assets will be liquidated, known or reasonably ascertainable liabilities satisfied or provided for, remaining proceeds distributed to shareholders, and all issued and outstanding shares redeemed, with the liquidation expected on or about November 2, 2026. Effective at the close of business on October 23, 2026, the fund will stop accepting orders for the purchase of Creation Units, and that date is expected to be its last full day of trading on NYSE Arca, where trading is expected to halt at market close. Shareholders may sell their shares on NYSE Arca until market close on October 23, 2026, or remain invested, but between that close and the liquidation date the shares will not trade on NYSE Arca and there is no assurance a market will exist for their purchase or sale. Before the liquidation date the fund will transition its assets to cash and cash equivalents, and during that period it may no longer pursue its investment objective or be managed consistent with its stated strategies, which is likely to impact performance. Shareholders still holding shares on the liquidation date will receive a liquidating distribution that may be greater or less than what they might receive by selling on NYSE Arca before market close on October 23, 2026, and may bear increased brokerage and other transaction expenses; sales or liquidations will generally be taxable events outside tax-deferred accounts.

Morgan Stanley Sees 50% Oracle Upside But Keeps Equal Weight

Morgan Stanley sees roughly 50% upside in Oracle shares but is not recommending investors buy them, with analyst Sanjit Singh maintaining an Equal Weight rating and a $210 price target. The central concern is what Oracle gets back from its massive AI infrastructure spending, even as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure revenue rose 121% year over year in the fiscal first quarter. Singh said he wants to see further gross margin stabilization, though he noted promising signs including greater OCI capacity, higher renewal pricing and increasing profits, and he liked the company's reaffirmed annual capital expenditure projection of $90 billion to $95 billion. Oracle's financial analyst day on Oct. 28 is the next key driver, which Singh called a good starting point to see whether Oracle can clarify infrastructure deployment, profitability and application patterns. By contrast, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore keeps an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $505 price target, believing it will eventually capture more than 80% of serviceable markets with its custom-chip projects, even though he thinks 2027 AI revenue forecasts are too high.

Morgan Stanley Upgrades Julius Baer After FINMA Ends AML Enforcement Action

Morgan Stanley upgraded Swiss private bank Julius Baer to equal-weight from underweight and raised its price target to CHF 81 from CHF 67 after Swiss regulator FINMA ended enforcement action against the bank over anti-money laundering breaches. Morgan Stanley said it was not moving to overweight as it does not expect client flows to improve in the second half of 2026 and sees 2027 as an investment year as Julius Baer transitions to a new core banking system. FINMA has relaxed measures restricting Julius Baer's entry into new business relationships with politically exposed persons from high-risk countries and has partially or fully lifted measures covering capital and liquidity, though the regulator will continue to require reporting on risk, error and compliance culture through 2032, and FINMA approval remains necessary for dividends and share buybacks. Morgan Stanley moved its valuation basis to 2028 earnings from 2027 and cut its cost of equity assumption to 10.5% from 11%, putting the new price target at 12 times estimated 2028 earnings. Underlying earnings per share are now forecast at CHF 6.05 for 2026, CHF 6.20 for 2027 and CHF 6.78 for 2028, compared with previous estimates of CHF 6.14, CHF 6.15 and CHF 6.90, respectively, while Morgan Stanley assumes CHF 100 million of buybacks for the remainder of 2026 and CHF 600 million annually in 2027 and 2028.

China rolls out targeted stimulus with 1% annual subsidy on home loans

The Chinese government announced a new round of stimulus measures aimed at boosting lending liquidity for targeted sectors and subsidising housing loans, after markets closed on 29 September. It is the first major stimulus package since September 2024. The Ministry of Finance will allocate housing loan subsidies to eligible homebuyers starting 1 October. First-time homebuyers will receive a subsidy equivalent to 1% per year of their mortgage principal for a maximum of five years. Meanwhile, the central bank expanded the quota of its relending facility for lending to targeted economic sectors such as infrastructure, technology and small businesses by a further 200 billion yuan, or 28 billion dollars, bringing the total to 1.4 trillion yuan. It also raised the share of qualifying loans that can draw on the facility to 100% from 60%, and cut the one-year interest rate on the facility by 0.25% to 1.5%. China has set this year's economic growth target at 4.5-5%, while second-quarter growth slowed to 4.3%, below target. Duncan Rigley, chief China economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the measures would likely lift Chinese growth to the lower end of the target range but would not fix structural imbalances, including sluggish domestic demand and heavy reliance on exports. Analysts at Morgan Stanley said the modest stimulus would not be enough to change the scale of household and local government debt in China, and that the latest property support measures would benefit lower-tier cities but would not comprehensively fix or rescue the real estate market.

Morgan Stanley Sees $17 Billion Tesla Semi Software Opportunity by 2040

Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco estimates autonomous Tesla Semis could generate roughly $17 billion in annual software revenue by 2040, a scenario that assumes about 82,000 Semis operating by then and a 13.5% share of the autonomous trucking market. At that scale, the firm estimates Semi software could produce about $7.5 billion in EBIT, roughly 10% upside to its base case. Percoco estimates Tesla could charge roughly $0.85 to $1 per mile for autonomous Semi software, which at about 18,000 miles a month works out to approximately $12,000 to $18,000 in monthly software revenue per vehicle, far above the roughly $100 per month Tesla charges consumers for Full Self-Driving. Morgan Stanley views its 82,000-vehicle assumption as relatively modest against Tesla's manufacturing ambitions, with the company's 1.8 million-square-foot Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, designed to eventually produce about 50,000 trucks annually. Early Semi customers include PepsiCo, DHL and US Foods, while a recently announced shipper coalition has ordered 2,500 trucks; the $17 billion estimate covers software rather than Semi vehicle sales and excludes potential additional revenue from charging.

Tesla Opens Nevada Semi Factory, Begins Customer Deliveries

Tesla opened its dedicated Sparks, Nevada factory and began customer deliveries of its long-delayed Semi truck, a plant designed to eventually produce 50,000 Semis annually. The truck is offered with claimed ranges of 325 miles and 500 miles for the long-range version, and early customers include PepsiCo, DHL and US Foods, while a newly announced 2,500-truck order from a shipper coalition adds to potential demand. Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco wrote in a new note that Tesla can generate roughly $12,000 to $18,000 per month from its autonomous trucking software, based on a $0.85 to $1 per mile subscription fee across 18,000 miles driven per month, compared with about $100 per month for full self-driving on consumer vehicles today. Percoco calculated that if Tesla reaches 82,000 Semis on the road by 2040, a 13.5% share of the autonomous addressable market, that would represent $17 billion of software revenue and about $7.5 billion of incremental EBIT, a 10% upside to Morgan Stanley's base case, and he noted this excludes the upfront vehicle sale and incremental charging revenue. He added that Tesla originally outlined a manufacturing target of 50,000 Semi trucks per year, so assuming 80,000 will be deployed in total over the next roughly 15 years is a conservative starting point.

Morgan Stanley to Build $684M Dallas Hub With 3,800 Jobs

Morgan Stanley will establish a new U.S. financial hub in Dallas backed by a $684M capital investment, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday. The state awarded the bank a $43.8M Texas Enterprise Fund grant and a $40K Veteran Created Job Bonus, and the hub is expected to create more than 3,800 jobs. The move adds Morgan Stanley to a growing list of Wall Street firms putting down roots in the region known as Y'all Street, following NYSE Texas's opening in March, the Texas Stock Exchange's launch of trading in July, and Nasdaq's plans for a regional headquarters in Dallas. Morgan Stanley shares fell 1.5% in late morning trading after President Trump rejected Iran's cease-fire proposal.

Morgan Stanley Sees Market Breadth and S&P 500 Meeting in the Middle

Morgan Stanley strategist Michael Wilson said the gap between the S&P 500's performance and the market's weak breadth needs to close, and he expects the two to meet somewhere in the middle over the next month unless bond market volatility eases. In a note on Monday, Wilson wrote that the firm leans toward a meeting in the middle if bond volatility does not calm down. Morgan Stanley still sees the market in a classic mid-cycle phase, with strong earnings offsetting lower valuations and higher-quality stocks taking the lead. Wilson noted that more than half of Russell 3000 stocks have fallen at least 20% since June, while the S&P 500's P/E ratio is back near 19 times, its March low, and earnings growth for the median stock remains in the mid-teens. He added that market breadth improved through most of the summer even as energy prices and yields rose, and that the recent narrowing in breadth occurred after Jackson Hole as the market priced a more hawkish Fed path. If bond volatility persists, Morgan Stanley expects breadth and index prices to meet in the middle over the next month before a strong finish to the year; if volatility eases sooner, the bank believes breadth should catch up with the index, lifting both. Wilson continues to favor large-cap quality stocks, especially asset-light companies with rising earnings estimates, and would add riskier stocks over the next month if the index falls. Morgan Stanley also said companies making heavy use of AI are seeing stronger margins and earnings, and that consensus assumes those benefits fade in later years, leaving room for further upside.

Morgan Stanley Partners With NEXTPredict in First Prediction Market Move by Major Bank

Morgan Stanley has partnered with prediction market platform NEXTPredict as a publicly named institutional collaborator, the first time a major Wall Street bank has formally aligned with a prediction market initiative focused on this emerging asset class. The bank will act as a strategic partner at the upcoming NEXTPredict summit, leading discussions on institutional adoption of prediction markets. Morgan Stanley runs a global capital markets and advisory franchise serving governments, large institutions, and individual investors, and the firm's tech and data stack is seen as potentially lifting adviser productivity and creating new fee-based formats for retail and institutional clients. The partnership lines up with the firm's work on AI and private markets, where richer probability data can feed product design and risk management in ways rivals like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are also exploring. The unresolved piece is monetisation, as the move does not answer whether clients will pay enough for these tools to offset fee pressure, regulatory complexity and existing risks around dividends and insider selling that analysts already flag.

Morgan Stanley public finance co-head Zach Solomon joins TD Securities

Morgan Stanley co-head of public finance investment banking Zach Solomon has left the firm to join TD Securities, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Solomon departed Morgan Stanley this week and confirmed his departure Friday, declining further comment; a Morgan Stanley representative also declined to comment, and a TD Securities spokesperson did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment. At Morgan Stanley, Solomon served as lead banker on more than $5 billion of bond sales for Brightline, the privately owned Florida passenger railroad connecting Miami and Orlando. His move comes as TD Securities expands its municipal bond operations, adding sales employees from JPMorgan Chase and Cantor Fitzgerald and building its public finance banking presence in Texas. Solomon's departure also coincides with financial difficulties at Brightline, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday after years of revenue falling short of expectations left it unable to repay billions of dollars borrowed to finance its Florida railroad; the filing does not include Brightline's operating company, allowing its passenger trains to continue running during the restructuring.

Dell Shares Rise 4% as Morgan Stanley Lifts Odds on $756 Bull Case

Dell Technologies shares climbed 4% Friday after Morgan Stanley raised the probability attached to its $756 bull-case scenario following a meeting with Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke, while leaving its Neutral rating and $511 target unchanged. The shift centers on whether AI spending represents another hardware replacement cycle or a broader expansion in infrastructure demand. Clarke told the brokerage that AI agents could drive inference-token usage 87 times higher by 2030, potentially creating additional demand for computing capacity. Morgan Stanley's unchanged base-case valuation means the note did not alter its formal recommendation, but the higher probability assigned to the more optimistic scenario gave investors another data point as they assess whether Dell's AI infrastructure growth can persist beyond the current spending cycle.

Anthropic Seeks Palantir-Style Founder Control Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion IPO

Anthropic is seeking shareholder approval for a governance structure that would give CEO Dario Amodei and his six co-founders a combined 50.1% of voting power ahead of a potential blockbuster IPO. The proposal would create a special class of shares giving the seven founders control over most corporate matters, provided at least three of them continue to hold a minimum number of shares, modeled on Palantir's founder-control system. The founders would not, however, control the election of Anthropic's board members, and the company also plans to give employees a separate class of stock that could serve as a tie-breaker on some corporate matters. The Claude maker is preparing for a potential public listing that could value it at around $2 trillion, potentially among the largest IPOs ever attempted, with Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs expected to play leading roles. Anthropic's IPO timing remains fluid, with recent reporting putting a potential launch around October or later.

Morgan Stanley Now Expects Two Quarterly BoE Hikes

Morgan Stanley has formally changed its Bank of England call to two rate hikes, in November and February, pointing to fiscal policy as the key potential catalyst for further tightening beyond that. Economists led by Bruna Skarica said they see the September meeting and Deputy Governor Lombardelli's remarks as "quite balanced," with the Monetary Policy Committee keen to stress that both the November hike and the broader path ahead remain uncertain. The bank said newsflow in commodity markets "is not improving," making it harder to justify a prolonged pause as its central scenario given recent developments in the Middle East, and it noted its call still looks dovish relative to roughly 100 basis points currently priced into the front end of the U.K. yield curve. Morgan Stanley estimates current fiscal headroom at approximately £8 billion, and said a £5 billion uplift to day-to-day spending to account for higher inflation could further reduce that buffer, meaning between £10 billion and £15 billion of revenue-raising measures may be needed to lift the budget surplus toward £15 billion without additional spending cuts. The bank also updated its gilt yield forecasts to reflect the new Bank Rate path, projecting two 25-basis-point hikes in November and February, and said attention is expected to increasingly shift toward the Budget, particularly the scale and front-loading of fiscal consolidation and its implications for near-term gilt supply.

Bualuang keeps DELTA target at 330 baht after Morgan Stanley revises AI power assumptions

Bualuang Securities says DELTA's growth outlook from AI and data centers has strengthened after Morgan Stanley raised its power assumptions for the Vera Rubin rack to 234kW from 149kW, and for Rubin Ultra to 600kW from 415kW, reflecting power demand that comes not only from GPUs but also from memory, networking, power delivery systems and cooling across the entire rack. As a result, Morgan Stanley now estimates global server and rack power demand in 2026 to 2028 at 18GW, 35GW and 52GW, compared with Bualuang's assumptions of 15GW, 20GW and 25GW respectively. Even after deducting US electricity constraints, this still equates to global installations of about 28GW per year, above Bualuang's assumption of 20GW per year. For DELTA, the higher power usage per rack supports both the value of power delivery systems and cooling systems per rack, while Morgan Stanley has raised its liquid cooling capex assumption by 30% and sees cooling as an increasingly essential infrastructure. In addition, the 800VDC architecture improves system efficiency by about 5%, cuts copper usage by about 45% and supports racks drawing more than 1MW. In the short term, component constraints look set to ease gradually in the third quarter of 2026, with Delta Taiwan's power electronics sales in July up 59% year on year and 17% month on month, before falling 9% month on month in August but still 40% above the same period last year. DELTA's third-quarter 2026 sales are expected at 2.2 billion US dollars, up 34% year on year and 10% quarter on quarter, with a gross margin of 29.2% and core profit of about 9 billion baht, up 21% year on year and 60% quarter on quarter, before the fourth quarter of 2026 has a chance to set a new record high on deliveries of orders backlogged from the second and third quarters of 2026. Bualuang maintains its Buy recommendation with a target price of 330 baht and keeps its weighting on the electronics sector at market weight.

Morgan Stanley mistakenly sends email, leaking over 100 IPO deal details

Morgan Stanley employees accidentally sent an internal document containing information on more than 100 investment banking client deals out via email, exposing details of the bank's pending transactions. The document listed companies preparing to offer IPOs in China, South Korea and India, mostly in Asia, as well as in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It also named the private equity and pension funds backing these companies, along with deals that had been put on hold. Sources said the document listing the deals was emailed this week to some clients by Mohamed Atmani, head of Financial Sponsors for the Asia-Pacific region in the investment banking division, before he tried to recall the email. An Instagram account was also found to have posted a blurred copy of the document. Atmani had intended to send a version prepared for clients, which was mostly general updates on the private equity business and recent transactions, but instead accidentally sent the internal version, some of which contained information that could be highly material to share prices. Morgan Stanley said in a statement that it places the utmost importance on protecting client confidentiality and took immediate action to address the inadvertent disclosure, and that it continues to coordinate with the relevant parties. The incident is a damaging mistake for Morgan Stanley, long one of the top securities underwriters in the Hong Kong stock market and a mergers and acquisitions adviser in Asia. The leak of information about upcoming share offerings could anger clients doing block trades, especially with the details disclosed in advance, which could pressure share prices as investors learn ahead of time and anticipate additional stock coming to market, potentially leaving sellers with less proceeds and making the transactions harder for the bank to carry out.

Morgan Stanley Flags 33-GW US AI Power Shortfall Through 2028

Morgan Stanley has put a number on one of the AI boom's most awkward constraints: the United States could face a roughly 33-gigawatt power shortfall through 2028 even after accounting for onsite generation and other accelerated power solutions. The bank's September analysis points toward behind-the-meter generation and equipment suppliers as part of the bridge, with Bloom Energy Corporation able to place fuel-cell generation close to the load and GE Vernova Inc. selling the turbines and grid equipment needed to add large blocks of reliable power. Bloom's Q2 revenue topped $1 billion and management has guided to roughly $3.9 billion to $4.2 billion for the year, while GE Vernova's gas-turbine and electrification backlogs give it exposure to multi-year power investment rather than a single data-center technology. Hedge-fund ownership in GE Vernova fell to 106 funds in Q2 from 118 in Q1, and Insider Monkey counted 116 hedge funds holding Bloom in Q2 2026, up from 91 in Q1. A 33-gigawatt deficit is large enough for both approaches to work, but the better operating outcome will depend on whether AI campuses prioritize speed, long-run power cost, or both.

Morgan Stanley Raises Cipher Digital Target to $54 on Amazon AI Lease

Morgan Stanley raised its price target on Cipher Digital to $54 from $43.50 on September 18 while keeping an Overweight rating, citing the Bitcoin miner's pivot to AI infrastructure. The thesis rests on a 15-year lease worth roughly $5.5 billion at Cipher's Black Pearl site with Amazon.com, under which Cipher agreed to provide about 300 megawatts to Amazon Web Services. Cipher began delivering capacity in August 2026, two months ahead of schedule, and said rent had commenced, while a separate Barber Lake transaction backed by Google adds another hyperscaler validation point. The bear case is financing and execution, since a long lease only becomes valuable once the data center is built, commissioned and delivered on schedule, and Cipher's legacy mining exposure means investors are underwriting a business-model transition while new projects consume cash. Insider Monkey's database counted 72 hedge funds holding Cipher in Q2 2026, up from 49 in Q1, with D. E. Shaw's disclosed common-share position at about 14.51 million shares after a 12% decrease, while Amazon's hedge-fund count rose to 369 from 353 and Arrowstreet Capital increased its position about 24% to 40.35 million shares.

Analyst earnings downgrades for US companies dominate for first time in 23 weeks

Analysts' outlook for US corporate earnings has turned bearish, with the number of analysts cutting profit forecasts exceeding those raising them for the first time in 23 weeks. According to a Citigroup index, the streak of upward revisions dominating, which had been the longest since September 2021, has come to an end. Stefan Kemper, chief investment officer at BNP Paribas Wealth Management Germany, cited consumer-related sectors including both consumer staples and consumer discretionary, materials, and financials as the main sources of weakness, saying this is directly linked to the combined effects of rising living costs and higher energy prices. Morgan Stanley strategist Michael Wilson warned this week that if equity valuations continue to decline further and monetary policy is tightened by a further rise in energy prices, the S&P 500 could fall by as much as 7%. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said in a report on the 23rd that global inflation in 2027 is expected to run at a faster pace than anticipated, requiring further monetary tightening, and the US Federal Reserve raised its policy interest rate this month for the first time in three years to address inflationary pressures.

Accenture and Anthropic Form AI Safety Partnership With $1 Billion Each

Accenture plc and Anthropic have formed a partnership under which Accenture will embed evaluators inside Anthropic to red-team its models and test its safeguards, with each company expecting to invest at least $1 billion over five years. Accenture shares rose 6% in early post-market trading following the announcement. The embedded team will be led by the Faculty, Accenture's AI acquisition completed in March, and will carry out alignment assessments and safeguard testing with employee-level access. The arrangement is non-exclusive, and Anthropic is reportedly in talks with METR and other independent evaluators as it expands its approach to external oversight. Accenture's stock remains more than a third below its January 2026 high, and Morgan Stanley downgraded the company to Equal-weight from Overweight ahead of its third-quarter results, arguing that AI spending was crowding out traditional IT-services budgets rather than expanding overall technology spending.

Morgan Stanley Joins Accelevation's $720 Million AI IPO Underwriting Group

Morgan Stanley has landed a role in the underwriting group for Accelevation's planned $720 million initial public offering, sending its shares down approximately 3.4% to $199.14 Tuesday morning. Accelevation, an AI data-center infrastructure supplier that builds power-distribution, cooling and modular systems for compute-heavy facilities, plans to sell 30 million shares at $20 to $24 apiece, a deal that could value the company at $5.37 billion. At the proposed top price, the offering would represent about 13.4% of Accelevation's targeted valuation, creating a meaningful public float and a real test of investor appetite for AI infrastructure. The mandate arrives as Morgan Stanley's second-quarter equity-underwriting revenue surged 70.2% to $851 million, though the bank's exact payday from this deal remains unknown because several underwriters share the mandate. Morgan Stanley trades 11.71% above its $178.27 GF Value estimate.

Meta's Muse AI Agent Sparks Selloff in Banks, Insurers and Travel Stocks

Shares of major banks, insurers and online travel agencies slid on Tuesday as investors feared that tools like Meta Platforms Inc.'s personal AI agent could disrupt businesses that benefit from so-called consumer inertia. The S&P 500 Financials Index dropped as much as 2.4% to its lowest levels since July, with JPMorgan Chase & Co., Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo & Co. all declining more than 2.5%, while insurer Allstate Corp. and brokerage Charles Schwab Corp. fell more than 5%. Travel booking companies were also hit, with Expedia Group Inc. down 3.7% and Booking Holdings Inc. falling 3.9%, and in Europe telecommunications was the worst performing sector in the benchmark Stoxx 600 as France's Orange SA and British carrier BT Group Plc each dropped about 4%. The downturn came as Muse, Meta's new AI agent, rose to the top of Apple Inc.'s US app store, sending Meta shares up 11% on Monday. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s trading desk said telecoms, insurance and utilities are the industries to watch if AI agents make it easier and cheaper to switch service providers, naming AT&T Inc., T-Mobile US Inc., Allstate, Progressive Corp., Netflix Inc., Paramount Skydance Corp., Expedia and Booking among its basket of consumer inertia stocks at risk.

Goldman, Morgan Stanley Lead $17.2B China Tech Fundraising Boom

U.S. banks have helped arrange 19 Chinese high-tech share sales worth $17.2 billion this year, nearly 30% of the sector's total issuance, according to Reuters citing LSEG data. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are among the banks riding the boom, which spans AI, chips and data-center infrastructure, ahead of a Thursday meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping with AI expected on the agenda. Goldman, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup helped arrange optical-components maker Zhongji Innolight's $6.8 billion Hong Kong listing, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley also worked on offerings from AI developer MiniMax and chipmakers Montage Technology and Iluvatar CoreX. JPMorgan Chase helped bring Victory Giant Technology's roughly $2.6 billion share sale to market. Polymarket traders give the U.S. and China a 10% chance of agreeing to pace the AI frontier by Dec. 31, with about $36,000 traded, while mainland Chinese and Hong Kong investors now hold more than $750 billion in U.S. equities, up 23% over the past year.

Morgan Stanley Warns S&P 500 Could Fall 7% to 7,100

Morgan Stanley has warned that the S&P 500 could fall 7% to as low as 7,100 before the bull market resumes into year end, citing tightening financial conditions and materially higher energy prices. The firm said bond yields near 5% would make equities less attractive to investors, while rising oil prices would seep through much of the economy. Diesel prices are already feeding persistent inflation, and with 70% of U.S. freight moving by truck, that pressure is amplified. AI stocks face twin risks: a single major security breach or a pullback in corporate AI spending could erase the sector's market momentum. The firm said inflation is a more likely trigger for a selloff than an AI flameout, since capital for data centers remains available and AI demand momentum is unlikely to disappear in a quarter.
MS · · Neutral Morgan Stanley issues a bearish S&P 500 forecast; the article reports its market call, not a company-specific development affecting its own business.

Big Tech's $300 Billion AI Guarantees Conceal Off-Balance-Sheet Risk

Technology companies have provided as much as $300 billion in guarantees for AI data centers and chips over the past year, according to the Financial Times, creating a financing structure that could change how investors assess the risks behind the artificial intelligence spending boom. The guarantees establish minimum future values for computing equipment or data centers owned by special-purpose entities, and if those assets later sell or lease for less than the guaranteed amount, the technology company could be responsible for part of the shortfall. Broadcom has provided about $29 billion in backing for a vehicle that will purchase chips and lease them to Anthropic, while Nvidia has agreed to support as much as 25% of certain infrastructure financing packages and provided $105 billion in guarantees tied to an Ohio data center campus for OpenAI. Meta has also provided a $28 billion guarantee for a data center venture with Blue Owl, and Morgan Stanley estimates seven major cloud and chip companies have accumulated more than $3.1 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments and other credit support. Analysts generally view the underlying assets as sufficient collateral so far, but the equation could change if AI demand slows, equipment becomes obsolete faster or data-center capacity exceeds customer needs, leaving investors to watch whether AI infrastructure spending generates enough cash flow to support the financing structures behind the boom.
