Every time a banking app freezes, a shopping site crashes mid-sale, or ChatGPT is slow to reply — behind the scenes there's a group of engineers who have to know instantly where it broke, inside a system made of thousands of parts all talking to each other. The tools that let them see a system too complex for any human brain to follow are called Observability. The tools that let them ship new code fast and safely are called DevOps — together, they're the engine room that keeps the entire software world running. And, without most people noticing, they've become a business that makes an enormous amount of money.

AI agents and cloud growth lift observability demand; software credit stress is a counterweight
▲
AI agents move into production, expanding observability demand Cisco research found 51% of enterprises now run AI agents in production, and 95% say their existing monitoring tools fall short. Atlassian launched tools to govern AI coding agents in Jira. This widens the market for monitoring and DevOps tools, because machine-run software needs more watching, not less.
Shows a new, concrete demand driver for the theme: agentic AI creating fresh monitoring needs.
▲
Cloud and DevOps spending stays strong, led by Microsoft and Datadog Microsoft's Azure passed $100 billion in annual revenue with a $678 billion backlog, and GitHub Copilot revenue accelerated over 60% quarter over quarter. Datadog kept full-year guidance at $4.45-$4.47 billion, 30% growth, with international at 27% of revenue. More cloud and coding activity means more demand for monitoring and DevOps tools.
Confirms the theme's core demand engine — cloud and developer tooling — is still growing fast.
▼
Software credit stress could squeeze smaller observability and DevOps vendors Credit pressure on business-development-company debt rose 25% from year-end 2025, and software is 36% of pressured debt, the largest share. Tighter financing can slow spending at smaller software firms and make it harder for weaker vendors to fund growth, a real drag on parts of the theme.
Provides the main counterweight: a capital-market risk that could slow demand and consolidation.
◆
New agent platforms from Tencent, UiPath and Cisco deepen competition Tencent Cloud launched DataBuddy, unifying DataOps, MLOps and AIOps; UiPath added agent governance and coding agents; Cisco pushed Splunk AI behind the firewall with token tracking. These validate the category but add well-funded rivals, which could pressure pricing for incumbents even as the overall market grows.
Shows competition intensifying from adjacent giants, a key force shaping the theme's pricing and share.

AI data-center demand lifted observability, but competition and credit stress weighed
▲
AI data-center demand boosts observability and DevOps Strong results and higher guidance from Datadog, Dynatrace, GitLab, Cisco, and Dell showed AI data-center spending is driving demand for observability and DevOps tools, with AI-agent observability becoming a new product category.
This is the main positive force behind the sector's performance in the quarter.
▲
Consolidation deepens moats Dynatrace's $915 million purchase of Arize and Datadog's expansion of multi-product accounts show vendors getting bigger to lock in customers, which can make it harder for smaller rivals to compete.
It explains how companies are strengthening their competitive positions through acquisitions and account growth.
▼
Competition and customer pullback pressure leaders Nvidia's Spectrum-X pressured Cisco and Arista, Datadog's largest customer cut usage, and rivals like Elastic, Temporal, Palo Alto, Cisco/Splunk, Tencent, and UiPath intensified competition, while weaker enterprise software spending and a 19% Datadog share drop signaled caution.
It captures the main counterweights that offset the positive demand trends.
▼
Credit stress threatens smaller vendors Software credit stress, with business development company debt up 25%, threatens smaller vendors' ability to fund growth, potentially limiting innovation and competition in the observability and DevOps space.
It highlights a financial risk that could constrain the sector's smaller players despite healthy demand.

SentinelOne Expands Wayfinder Threat Hunting to AWS, Azure and Google Cloud
SentinelOne announced that its Wayfinder Threat Hunting service now covers AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, extending AI-powered Singularity telemetry and expert human-led hunting across endpoints, identities, and cloud control planes to address threats such as IAM privilege escalation, unauthorized access, and data exfiltration. A key element of the launch is a unified, continuous hunting workflow that fuses SentinelOne and Google Threat Intelligence, giving security teams consolidated visibility and enriched Purple AI summaries across their entire hybrid cloud environment. The move follows the earlier expansion of Wayfinder Frontier AI Services, which added AI-powered code risk analysis and compromise assessments using advanced OpenAI models, and reinforces SentinelOne's push beyond endpoint security into AI, identity, and cloud. SentinelOne's narrative projects $1.8 billion in revenue and $213.5 million in earnings by 2029, yielding a $24.25 fair value, an 8% upside to its current price, while the most pessimistic analysts still saw only about 16.7% annual revenue growth and no profitability in three years. Investors are still watching the risk that hyperscaler partners eventually prioritize their own security stacks, and that higher compliance costs and rising localization demands could reshape both narratives once the announcement is fully reflected in forecasts.

Stifel Upgrades Microsoft to Buy, Lifts Price Target to $575 on Azure AI Growth
Stifel upgraded Microsoft to Buy from Hold and raised its price target to $575 from $530 in a September 23 research note, citing robust artificial intelligence growth and Azure's continued acceleration. The firm believes Microsoft can sustain revenue growth in the mid-to-upper teens while keeping operating margins relatively stable, and expects improving operational efficiencies to support strong cash flow and reduce the need for external financing. Azure's recent acceleration is expected to continue as additional data-center capacity comes online, with operational efficiencies and a growing revenue contribution from OpenAI also supporting growth, after CFO Amy Hood said efficiency gains are being monetized quickly and process improvements have shortened lead times for bringing CPU and GPU capacity online. Copilot seats reached roughly 30 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, while GitHub's shift toward consumption-based pricing offers another source of recurring growth. Microsoft still faces risks from high capital requirements for AI and data-center capacity, rapid advances in rival AI models that could pressure premium pricing for Azure AI and Copilot, and the challenge of converting Copilot's large user base into durable incremental revenue and profit. Hedge fund positioning weakened modestly between the first and second quarters, with the number of funds holding the stock falling from 282 to 273, though Arrowstreet Capital raised its stake by 14% to approximately $10.31 billion and Fisher Asset Management increased its position by 3% to roughly $9.92 billion; short interest declined to about 67.35 million shares as of September 15 from 68.54 million as of August 14, or about 0.91% of shares outstanding.

Alphabet finished at $342.36, up 1.3%, following its collaboration with Experian to integrate Experian with Google Gemini for personalized credit insights via conversational AI, Microsoft closed at $497.93, down 0.5%, after teaming with Photonic on quantum resource estimation, and Oracle settled at $139.54, down 3.5%, after announcing new capabilities for its Digital Assets Data Nexus.
Datadog International Business Hits 27% of Revenue as Full-Year Guidance Set at $4.45-$4.47 Billion
Datadog is accelerating its international expansion across EMEA and APAC, with international markets contributing about 27% of total revenues in the first six months of 2026. The company maintains sales operations in Amsterdam, Dublin, London, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo, and says it is seeing growth acceleration across regions with particularly strong execution in LatAm. Management expects full-year 2026 revenues of $4.45-$4.47 billion, representing 30% year-over-year growth, though the company cautions that expansion efforts may hurt near-term operating results and carries risks from slower cloud adoption, regulatory and privacy rules, higher compliance costs, and currency fluctuations. Rivals are also widening their reach: Dynatrace posted a strong EMEA rebound in first-quarter fiscal 2027 and an eight-figure new-logo win from one of Latin America's largest financial institutions, while Cisco reported fiscal fourth-quarter product-order growth of 44% in the Americas, 25% in EMEA, and 19% in APJC. Datadog shares have surged 89% year to date, outpacing the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector's 21.8% return, and trade at a trailing 12-month price-to-sales ratio of 24.03 versus the Internet – Software industry average of 5.88. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Datadog's 2026 earnings stands at $2.52 per share, unchanged over the past 30 days but up 4.56% over the past 60 days, compared with $2.05 per share reported in 2025.
BDC Credit Stress Rises 25% as Software Drives 36% of Pressured Debt
Credit pressure on business development company debt investments is climbing, with software accounting for 36% of debt under pressure, the largest share by sector, according to LCD's analysis of more than 180 BDCs. The number of BDC-held companies showing some degree of credit pressure rose to 583 as of June 30, up 8% from March and 25% from year-end 2025, out of roughly 5,000 companies held by BDCs a year ago. Dollar exposure is growing faster than borrower count as larger, more consequential names show signs of stress, with the volume of first-lien term loan and unitranche investments under pressure rising 92% since the end of 2025 to $47 billion. Software's 36% share of investments at fair value as of Q2 is outsized relative to its 22% weight of the BDC universe overall. Most stressed borrowers are still paying cash, as roughly half of the 583 companies on the watchlist at the end of June did not use payment-in-kind interest in the last 12 months.
Cisco Research Finds Over Half of Enterprises Now Run Agentic AI in Production
Cisco released new research, conducted independently by Omdia, showing that 51% of enterprises now run agentic AI that acts in production, with 84% expecting an AI-led operating model within twelve months. The study surveyed 1,000 IT and network operations leaders at organizations with 500 or more employees across North America, Western Europe, and Asia-Pacific. It found that 95% of organizations say their existing, non-agentic AIOps tools fall short in one or more significant areas, while 86% say a single integrated platform is the most effective path forward and 69% require detailed explainability for agent-driven actions. The average organization generates about 4,100 monitoring alerts and events each day, more than half of them network related, a volume that would require roughly 100 IT specialists to clear manually. Cisco said its analysis of aggregated direct-to-AI network telemetry shows AI traffic is on a trajectory to double every six months, and its testing found that tasks performed by agents can generate up to 450% more total network traffic.

Arpio Launches First Automated Cloud Disaster Recovery for Agentic AI on Amazon Bedrock
Arpio announced the first automated cloud disaster recovery solution to include application state recovery for agentic AI workloads running on Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The Durham, NC-based disaster recovery platform said the new capabilities extend its full-application recovery approach to the specialized resources and dependencies that agentic AI applications introduce, which traditional disaster recovery solutions were not designed to protect. Arpio protects the agent itself along with interconnected AWS resources including runtimes, memory, identity, policies, guardrails, knowledge bases, data, and supporting infrastructure, and can restore a complete application environment in approximately 60 minutes or less, compared with an average of 21 days following a ransomware attack. The company cited KPMG's AI Pulse Survey finding that 54 percent of U.S. companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue are already deploying AI agents. CEO Doug Neumann said organizations need to recover AI agents instantaneously with the same confidence they expect from other critical applications, since downtime can mean lost time, lost revenue, disrupted operations, and damage to customer trust. The new Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore disaster recovery capabilities are available immediately for new and existing customers.

Atlassian Launches AI Agent Governance Tools for Jira
Atlassian Corporation rolled out a set of tools on September 10 built around managing AI agents working on codebases, spanning Jira and its DX platform. The new Code Context feature, built on Atlassian's Teamwork Graph, gives Rovo and other coding agents visibility into architecture, requirements, and multi-repository codebases, while Agent Context Controls let platform teams decide which Jira and Confluence spaces those agents can see. Agent loops in Jira now scan backlogs for well-defined, unassigned tickets, hand them to Jira's coding agent for execution and testing, and open pull requests ready for human review, with a new Standards feature letting platform teams set coding rules once and apply them everywhere agents work. Atlassian's 2026 AI SDLC study found that 94% of engineering leaders already use AI, but only 6% have systems in place to scale that work across the full development lifecycle. The company reported a GAAP operating margin of just 0.2% and a GAAP net loss of $54 million for fiscal 2026, even as non-GAAP operating margin came in at 30% and non-GAAP net income reached $1,526 million.

Cisco Launches AI POD for Splunk to Capture Enterprise AI Spending
Cisco Systems introduced the Cisco AI POD for Splunk at the 2026 Splunk conference in Denver, a configuration that brings Splunk AI capabilities to customers running Splunk Enterprise in on-premises, private-cloud, and air-gapped environments by combining Cisco infrastructure with Nvidia accelerated computing. The move extends Cisco's push to capture more enterprise AI spending beyond hardware, and it comes alongside a multi-year agreement with AWS to co-develop Splunk-centered security products for AI-driven threats. Cisco took in $9.3 billion of AI infrastructure orders from hyperscalers in fiscal 2026, including $4 billion in the fourth quarter alone, and generated around $4 billion in AI infrastructure revenue during the year, a figure it expects to nearly double to $7.5 billion in fiscal 2027. The stress point is that infrastructure leads this growth and is exposed to competitive pricing and component cost inflation, while observability revenue grew just 6% in the fourth quarter, leaving open how quickly Cisco converts AI infrastructure into higher-value recurring software and security growth. Hedge fund positioning moved supportively before the Splunk announcement, with the number of funds holding Cisco rising to 101 in the second quarter from 97 in the first quarter and 77 in the fourth quarter, and short interest falling 5.77% from the prior reading to 55.5 million shares as of August 31.

Okta, IBM, Broadcom and Dataiku Ship Agent Governance Products as Category Decouples From Platforms
Four major infrastructure vendors have now shipped standalone agent governance products at general availability, a rush that has itself become the signal that agent governance is decoupling from individual platforms to become a category of its own. Okta pushed furthest into new territory with its July 2026 product innovations, shipping Agent-to-Agent Connections at general availability to enable secure multi-agent workflows through temporary runtime tokens that enforce which agents may invoke which others, alongside the Agent Gateway, available as a research release, which sits between agents and the systems they access without requiring code changes. IBM's Think 2026 announcement positioned next-generation watsonx Orchestrate as an agentic control plane, introduced in June on AWS and IBM Cloud, offering runtime policy management, credential health monitoring, and an Agent Access overview across an organization's entire agent estate. Broadcom embedded governance directly into the compute fabric with AgentMinder, unveiled at VMware Explore on August 31 and shipping at general availability bundled into the VMware Private AI Cloud, treating agents as enterprise-grade identities bound to a declared mission, permitted intents, approved tools, and authorized resources. Dataiku made a different architectural bet, with Dataiku Agent Management scanning agents across nine platforms including Microsoft Copilot Studio, Salesforce Agentforce, AWS Bedrock, and Google Vertex to provide a cross-platform control tower for discovery, certification, and audit-readiness. The urgency tracks to two numbers: Menlo Ventures found that 76 percent of AI applications are purchased rather than built internally, and the Cloud Security Alliance reported in February that 84 percent of organizations doubt they could pass a compliance audit focused on agent behavior or access controls.

Devicie Automates 1,500-Plus Apps Inside Microsoft Intune
Devicie announced a major expansion of the application management capabilities within its Intune management and automation platform, automating the operational work of keeping Windows and macOS applications current inside Microsoft Intune. The platform now automatically manages more than 1,500 Windows and macOS applications, alongside an organization's own line-of-business software at no additional charge, with new application versions typically made ready within Microsoft Intune within hours of publisher release. The company cited accelerating update pressure, noting that Microsoft's 8 September 2026 monthly security update addressed more than 950 vulnerabilities in a single release, while Jerry Gamblin's analysis of the CVE List records 1,255 Microsoft CVEs across the whole of 2025, and that Adobe moved from monthly to twice-monthly security bulletins in July 2026. Remediation deadlines have tightened as well, with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in June 2026 replacing its earlier fourteen-day deadline for known exploited vulnerabilities with a tiered directive whose fastest tier is three days. Chief Executive Officer Alex Hesterberg said enterprises cannot meet that pace by adding more manual work and that automation at this speed requires trust. The catalog spans widely used software including Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Chrome, Adobe Acrobat, Slack, Zoom Workplace and Mozilla Firefox, and Devicie said John Holland Group runs the enhanced application management in production across more than 60 worksites with $1.2 million in annual return, while Toyota Financial Services moved a 1,300-device fleet to modern management on Intune with Devicie, reducing device builds to 20 minutes.

Copado Launches Agentia Headless for Salesforce Developers
Copado announced Agentia Headless, a new developer experience that brings governed AI agents directly into the IDE and terminal used by Salesforce developers. The tool, now part of the recently announced Agentia by Copado platform, lets developers operate Copado pipelines, trigger tests and apply existing organizational controls without switching interfaces or becoming AI experts. Copado said one customer had calculated 216 hours of manual pre and post-deployment steps per year across the work of just two release managers before deploying Agentia, while another spent two full weeks on manual regression testing before a single change could reach production, and a CPQ team required 10 days to validate 2,000 product configurations per release. The company said Agentia embeds continuous governance and testing directly into the pipeline, enabling enterprise teams to achieve up to 70% faster releases while reducing production defects. Agentia Headless will be available directly through Copado and its global partner network starting November 2026.
Datadog and Dynatrace Race to Own AI-Agent Observability Market
Datadog and Dynatrace are racing to own the emerging market for AI-agent observability, as AI coding agents threaten to generate more software changes and production failures to monitor. Datadog told the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 10 that monetization of AI-agent observability has begun, with thousands of customers using the capability, describing an emerging inference economy in which more AI applications and agents mean more activity to monitor. One day later, Dynatrace launched a verified Cursor Marketplace plugin that gives coding agents access to live production context through MCP and 30 Dynatrace skills. Datadog's second-quarter revenue rose 36% to $1.12 billion, and customers generating at least $100,000 of annual recurring revenue increased 23% to roughly 4,720, while Dynatrace's latest quarterly ARR grew 17% to $2.136 billion and annualized log-consumption reached $200 million after almost doubling over the previous two quarters. Dynatrace also faces execution and integration risk from its planned $915 million Arize acquisition, and the deciding question is whether autonomous agents prevent enough problems to reduce monitoring or create enough software activity to make observability a larger machine-to-machine market.

Microsoft Plans 38GW Data Center Buildout by 2032 to Ease AI Capacity Crunch
Microsoft is planning to expand its global data-center footprint to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032, up from about 12 gigawatts today, according to a Bloomberg report. That is more than a threefold increase, and the company says it does not have enough computing capacity to meet demand. Server shortages have reportedly forced Microsoft to turn away some cloud and AI customers, and Temu moved a major cloud deal to Oracle after Microsoft could not provide enough capacity in the regions it wanted. The strain has also hit existing services: GitHub suffered an eight-hour outage in August tied to server constraints, and Microsoft has placed limits on Xbox cloud-gaming usage. Microsoft currently has about 2 gigawatts dedicated to AI, and by 2032 AI capacity is expected to represent roughly one-third of the planned 38-gigawatt footprint.

China Merchants Bank Wins CNCF Contest for AI Platform
China Merchants Bank, one of China's leading commercial banks, has won the CNCF End User Case Study Contest for KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenInfra Summit + PyTorch Conference China 2026, recognizing its unified Kubernetes control plane that lets AI training, fine-tuning, and online inference share nearly 10,000 heterogeneous accelerator cards. The bank brought 99% of its accelerator compute resources under this framework, lifting average utilization from 35% to more than 60% and cutting the cost of processing 1 million tokens by more than 60%. Built with Kueue, KEDA, Prometheus, HAMi, and Fluid, the platform decouples runtimes while sharing infrastructure, and its in-house Twinkle training framework lets five LoRA tenants share one base model instance by default, cutting accelerator resource usage for that setup by 80% and increasing training density fivefold. CNCF CTO Chris Aniszczyk praised the approach as a clear example of composable, vendor-neutral infrastructure delivering measurable efficiency at scale. The bank plans to extend KEDA toward serverless inference that can scale to zero and broaden HAMi-based support for heterogeneous accelerators.
