Quantum computing is the promise of solving problems that every supercomputer on Earth combined still can't — but as of 2026, it makes very little money, the machines break easily, and a "truly useful" one is still years away. This lesson is the map that strings the 6 categories of quantum together: who does what, who depends on whom, where the power (and the risk) sits — and why the one category that already makes money today isn't a quantum computer at all (each category has its own deep-dive chapter).
Government Backing and Commercial Proof Drive Quantum Gains
▲
Government Support Accelerates Trump's executive orders sped up federal quantum adoption and post-quantum cryptography migration. Illinois invested $500 million in a quantum hub, and France mandated quantum-safe encryption by 2030, boosting demand.
Government actions directly increase demand and funding for quantum technologies.
▲
Commercial Validation and Capital Inflows Quantinuum's IPO raised $1.68 billion, validating trapped-ion pure-plays. Photonic quantum attracted $2.1 billion in private capital, overtaking superconducting. IBM demonstrated practical quantum use in fusion materials.
These events show commercial viability and attract significant investment, driving sector growth.
▼
Investor Scrutiny Pressures Pure-Plays Investors increasingly distinguish commercial winners from science projects, pressuring pure-plays like Rigetti and D-Wave despite D-Wave's booking growth. Several quantum stocks trade at stretched valuations with falling revenue.
This highlights a key risk: market differentiation and valuation concerns that could hinder weaker players.
▼
Hyperscaler Dominance Risk Hyperscalers may capture most value regardless of which architecture wins, potentially limiting upside for pure-play quantum companies and concentrating benefits among large tech firms.
This structural risk could overshadow gains for smaller quantum firms, affecting competition and value distribution.

EU Financial Authorities Urge Early Action on Quantum Computers, Citing Major Risks to Cryptography
The European Banking Authority, the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, and the European Securities and Markets Authority published a joint risk report on September 23, warning that quantum computers pose a serious risk to the cryptography protecting communications, transactions, databases, and blockchains. They said the threat could materialize sooner than the commercialization of quantum technology, and called on financial institutions and market participants to prepare for the rapid development of quantum computers. In crypto assets, ownership is proven through digital signatures using public and private keys, but future quantum computers could derive a private key from a public key and impersonate the owner to move assets. CoinDesk, citing data from CryptoQuant, reported that roughly 6.9 million bitcoins could be exposed to quantum attacks. The EU has already set out a plan to migrate to post-quantum cryptography, asking member states to begin the transition by the end of 2026 and aiming to protect high-risk sectors by the end of 2030 at the latest. On September 10, Eigen Labs published research showing that the key computational processing required for a quantum attack on the cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum could be reduced by more than 50 percent in resource terms compared with previous estimates.

IBM Brings z17 Mainframe to Marist University AI Incubator
IBM has placed its z17 mainframe at Marist University's new Innovation Incubator, sending shares up about 2.2% to $236.55 Wednesday morning from Tuesday's $231.38 close. Marist plans to test autonomous marketing agents and explore AI applications in polling, and researchers are also scoping a project that would use quantum optimization to build portfolio allocations. IBM provided the machine for students and faculty to develop and test applications, and its announcement gives no dollar value for the system or revenue forecast for the collaboration. The stock still sat 2.59% below its $242.84 GF Value estimate, a gap that gives investors a valuation reference but that the campus project alone does not close. The investor case here takes patience, since getting future developers comfortable with IBM's technology could pay off if their work reaches enterprise customers, but the z17 at Marist shows where IBM wants its platform used rather than what customers will pay for the applications that emerge.

Intel CEO Touts Quantum-CPU Hybrid as IonQ Tests Error-Correction Decoder
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said at Splunk's .conf26 conference that CPUs, GPUs and quantum processors will likely work together across different applications, citing error correction as an area where the technology still needs to advance. Days later, IonQ said it had tested a real-time quantum error-correction decoder running on a single standard CPU, with the system tested on simulated workloads representing up to 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million operations. IonQ said the decoder added as little as 0.02% to execution time under standard operating-noise assumptions, though the research used simulated workloads rather than a quantum computer operating with 408 logical qubits, so it does not establish that the technology is ready for commercial-scale deployment. Still, the test illustrates how conventional computing could handle error correction while quantum processors perform specialized calculations. INTC shares rose 1.7% Tuesday to $123.86, while IonQ has drawn renewed attention from investors following the milestone, and the next catalyst is whether IonQ can demonstrate the decoder on increasingly large, real quantum systems.

Coinbase to Build Quantum-Resistant Crypto Custody System
Crypto exchange Coinbase revealed by September 22 that it is developing a crypto custody system capable of supporting any post-quantum signature scheme blockchains may adopt in the future, in preparation for the risk of quantum computers cracking encryption. Yehuda Lindell, the company's head of cryptography, explained this in a video interview with the Mara Foundation. The company is upgrading its current custody infrastructure, which uses multi-party computation, so that it can withstand attacks by quantum computers, and is also considering an alternative approach using specialized devices called hardware security modules in case a signature scheme is adopted that multi-party computation cannot handle. According to the Mara Foundation, the company protects roughly 250 billion dollars' worth of digital assets centered on this system. On July 23, Coinbase explained on its official blog that its current key management system, CoreKMS, protects about 99.9 percent of its custodied assets, and that it is also developing a quantum-resistant version, PQ-CoreKMS, with plans to build an automated infrastructure within one year that can securely sign while distributing keys across multiple locations. Over the following two to three years, it aims to develop multi-party computation that does not require generating a complete private key even for quantum-resistant signatures.

B. Riley's thesis is sector-wide, but the report provides no fresh revenue forecasts, cash-flow estimates, technical milestones or new valuation work behind the three price targets, leaving the stocks dependent on long-term expectations rather than near-term financial evidence.
Rigetti Says Coherence Time, Not Qubit Count, Is Its Key Hurdle
Rigetti Computing said in its latest technology update that the biggest challenge in its quantum roadmap is no longer adding more qubits but improving the performance of its flagship 108-qubit Cepheus system. During the second quarter of 2026 earnings call, management acknowledged that coherence time has become the primary bottleneck limiting two-qubit gate fidelity, even as Cepheus-1-108Q stands among only three generally available gate-based quantum computers with more than 100 qubits. The system currently operates with coherence times of roughly 25-30 microseconds, a level that constrains the reliability of quantum operations. Rigetti is directing engineering efforts toward chip redesigns, fabrication process improvements and new materials, including tantalum-capped superconducting contacts, and management expects these initiatives to gradually double or even triple coherence times over the next several years. In peer updates, Quantum Computing Inc. signed a three-year Framework Agreement with Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar covering quantum computing, sensing and communications, while IonQ secured an $8.18 million commercial agreement with Congruity360 to integrate quantum-safe networking into its enterprise data management platform.

Kevin O'Leary Says Bitcoin Hits $1 Million Only If Quantum Risk Is Solved
Kevin O'Leary said Bitcoin will reach $1 million, but only if the crypto industry resolves the quantum-computing threat known as Q-Day, the point at which a quantum computer could forge the signatures securing every Bitcoin wallet. Speaking at Avalanche Summit, O'Leary said no such machine exists and estimates for when one arrives run from the early 2030s to never, but that the doubt alone is why large funds cap Bitcoin exposure near 3%, treating it as a sliver of gold rather than a core holding. He also reversed his Ethereum thesis, saying his eighteen-month-old view that owning Bitcoin and Ethereum captured 97% of crypto's upside did not pan out, and that he now expects entire industries to pick their own chain, with whichever blockchain the first major exchange adopts for tokenization seeing that token soar. The interview came after the SEC approved its Innovation Exemption for tokenized stocks last week and as ICE evaluates Avalanche as the settlement layer for the NYSE's in-development trading system. O'Leary frames crypto as becoming the twelfth sector of the S&P because it services the other eleven.
