Denso profit miss and quake supply hit outweigh Micron deal

  • April–June profit falls 14%, full-year forecast misses estimates Denso's quarterly net profit dropped 14.4% to 67.8 billion yen as higher material costs and growth spending squeezed margins. Revenue rose on electrification and smart products, but the unchanged full-year profit forecast of 382 billion yen badly missed the 424.6 billion yen analysts expected. The earnings miss is the main reason the stock plunged on July 31.

This is the single biggest new company-specific event and directly explains the stock's sharp fall.

  • Kumamoto earthquake forces Toyota plant halts, Denso checks suppliers Toyota will stop its Tahara plant from August 3–7 and extend shutdowns at three Fukuoka plants after the Kumamoto earthquake damaged Aisin Kyushu's factory. Denso is investigating damage at its own suppliers. Multi-tier supply chains take time to assess, so production cuts at major customers threaten Denso's near-term sales and parts deliveries.

A fresh supply-chain disruption that can reduce Denso's production and revenue in coming weeks.

  • Micron multi-year AI memory deals include Denso as partner Micron completed long-term Strategic Customer Agreements with seven automotive suppliers, including Denso, securing advanced memory and storage for AI-enabled vehicles. For Denso, this locks in supply visibility and pricing certainty for key electronics, supporting its intelligent-product roadmap. The deals are a modest positive but not enough to offset the profit miss.

A new partnership that supports Denso's technology and supply outlook, though smaller than the earnings hit.

Niterra Cancels Acquisition of Denso's Spark Plug Business

Niterra announced on the 2nd that it has decided to cancel its acquisition of Denso's spark plug and exhaust sensor businesses, including oxygen sensors and air-fuel ratio sensors, and to sign an agreement terminating the contract. Denso requested the cancellation, citing changes in the market environment and a review of its policy regarding the businesses in question, and Niterra accepted the request. The acquisition had been announced on September 1, 2025, and the company had continued discussions toward completing it, but it judged that prolonged negotiations would increase uncertainty over the businesses' future prospects, affect the formulation of integration plans, and reduce the benefits of the acquisition. The full-year earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027 had incorporated preparation costs for the acquisition, but the company says the impact of the cancellation on its results will be minor. As for the Medium-Term Management Plan 2030 announced in November 2025, the company plans to re-examine its business plan, including capital allocation for growth investments, and announce it at a later date.

Denso Launches Battery Passport Service

Denso, a major auto parts manufacturer, announced on August 25 that it has begun offering a battery passport service utilizing blockchain technology, called the "DENSO Digital Product Passport Solution for Battery." Against the backdrop of the European Battery Regulation mandating the introduction of battery passports for electric vehicle batteries, light transport batteries, and industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh from February 18, 2027, the service supports automakers and battery manufacturers in regulatory compliance and ensuring traceability. Based on the data model developed by the European Battery Passport Readiness Consortium, the service generates a passport for each battery product, allowing businesses to collect information from their core systems and suppliers, and users to verify information via QR codes. It also features the ability to control the information viewed according to the user's role, with data reliability ensured by blockchain technology that Denso has been researching and developing since 2017. In June, a joint verification was conducted using actual data from AESC's stationary energy storage system batteries, and third-party certification body TÜV Rheinland Japan confirmed compliance with the European Battery Regulation and practicality.

Trump's 50% Tariff on Canadian Goods Hits Japanese Automakers

President Trump's announcement of a 50% tariff on Canadian-made vehicles and parts is expected to hit Japanese automakers. Major companies have built supply chains spanning the US, Canada, and Mexico to produce for the US market, and with the review of the USMCA, which is the basis for this, dragging on, the deteriorating US-Canada relationship is making it difficult for them to respond. Toyota produces Lexus and RAV4 models at its Canadian plant, while Denso and Aisin also export parts. Honda exports about 300,000 units of models like the Civic annually. With an additional 25% tariff already in effect, the industry is crying out that 'businesses will become unviable.' Companies are pushing to strengthen local production, but the conditions for restructuring their supply chains are not in place, leaving them in a bind.

Micron Secures Automotive Deals and AI Demand to Offset Cyclical Pressures

Micron Technology has completed strategic customer agreements with a group of automotive Tier 1 suppliers, including Qualcomm, Visteon, HARMAN, JOYNEXT, DENSO, Astemo and Hyundai Mobis, giving the company greater visibility into future memory and storage orders as vehicles add more advanced driver assistance and in-cabin computing power. The bigger driver remains AI, with Amazon lifting its 2026 outlay target to $220 billion and Alphabet planning a $200 billion budget, money that keeps flowing toward the memory chips inside AI servers. In the nine months ended May 28, the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, Micron's revenue reached $79 billion, a 203% jump from the same stretch a year earlier, while net income hit $47 billion, a 60% net margin, versus just $5 billion the year before. Analysts expect revenue to grow 247% this fiscal year and another 85% in fiscal 2027, and Micron has pushed customers toward five-year price agreements instead of the one-year contracts that once left it exposed to sudden price swings. However, the stock has fallen about 30% since peaking in June after a nearly 690% climb over the prior twelve months, reflecting investor caution tied to historical memory chip cycles and potential new supply from rivals including Samsung, SK Hynix and ChangXin Memory Technologies.

Japanese Companies Wary of Side Effects from Weak Yen, Do Not Expect Return to Appropriate Level of 120 Yen Range

As Japanese companies announce their earnings, the weak yen is boosting performance, but there is growing caution about side effects such as higher raw material costs and sluggish consumption. Mitsubishi Electric CFO Fujimoto noted that the assumed exchange rate of 150 yen is stronger than the post-intervention level, leaving room for further upside, while Toyota Motor and Mitsui & Co. also raised their earnings forecasts, citing the weak yen as a tailwind. However, Denso and Sharp were forced to report profit declines or downward revisions due to soaring component costs, and Yoshinoya Holdings and Kagome also pointed to the impact of rising costs and slowing domestic sales. Companies have also voiced concerns about rapid currency fluctuations, with Itochu and Toyota calling for stable exchange rates. Regarding the appropriate level, CFOs at Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co. expect the trend of a strong dollar and weak yen to continue, while Mitsubishi Electric CFO Fujimoto indicated that the company does not anticipate a return to the 120 yen range.

Toyota to halt Tahara plant from August 3 to 7 due to Kumamoto earthquake, extends stoppages at three Fukuoka plants

Toyota Motor announced on the 31st that it will suspend operations at its Tahara plant in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, which produces luxury Lexus vehicles, from August 3 to 7 due to parts supply disruptions caused by the Kumamoto earthquake. It also extended the shutdown at three plants in Fukuoka Prefecture until the 5th, while Daihatsu Motor and Nissan Motor are also prolonging production halts at their Kyushu plants, spreading the impact further. Aisin Kyushu, a Toyota-affiliated parts supplier, has halted operations at its Kumamoto plant after it was damaged, and because it produces critical components for car doors, the disruption could affect customers beyond Toyota. The multi-tiered structure of the auto industry means it is taking time to assess the situation at smaller parts makers with no direct transactions, and Denso is also investigating the damage status of its own suppliers.

Micron Inks Long-Term Auto Supply Deals and Plans $250 Billion US Fab Build-Out

Micron Technology has completed Strategic Customer Agreements with major automotive suppliers Qualcomm, DENSO, and Hyundai Mobis, and is accelerating more than US$250.00 billion of US fab and technology investments through 2035 to support long-term demand for advanced memory and storage. The company aims for 40% of its DRAM output to be produced in the US, a move that ties directly into AI and automotive contracts while reinforcing its role in premium memory. These long-horizon supply pacts and capacity plans highlight Micron's push to lock in critical end markets like AI-enabled vehicles and reshape the geography and resilience of its manufacturing base. The developments reinforce the existing AI-driven investment narrative, with AI and data center memory remaining the core profit engine, while newer end markets like autos make earnings less lumpy. However, investors should weigh how increased Chinese DRAM capacity and potential future pricing pressure could affect Micron's long-term margins and cash generation.

Micron stock falls despite TSMC growth and new automotive supply deals

Micron Technology shares fell 3.2% Thursday morning, extending a two-day sell-off even as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported a 77% year-over-year profit jump and Micron announced new automotive chip supply agreements. TSMC’s warning that capital investment will rise to over $60 billion this year, up from a prior forecast of about $54 billion, weighed on its own stock and appeared to drag Micron lower, despite the fact that increased TSMC production of AI chips should boost demand for Micron’s HBM memory. Separately, Micron disclosed Strategic Customer Agreements with seven Tier 1 automotive suppliers—Qualcomm, Visteon, HARMAN, JOYNEXT, DENSO, Astemo, and Hyundai Mobis—providing certainty on future orders and pricing.
