Government pushes ahead with national catastrophe insurance system, total premiums of 15.5 billion baht

The government is pushing ahead with a national catastrophe insurance system, with total premiums of 15.5 billion baht, covering approximately 30 million households. This breaks down into 15 billion baht for residential insurance and 500 million baht for group accident insurance. It marks a move to bring the public sector in as a major insurance buyer and significantly increases the total premium value generated, or premium pool, for the insurance industry. Coverage includes floods, windstorms, and earthquakes, up to 100,000 baht per event per household. In the case of death from an accident caused by a disaster, coverage is 2 million baht per person, and total permanent disability is 200,000 baht per person. Coverage begins on 1 October 2026 and runs to 1 October 2027. Companies directly linked to the scheme include Bangkok Insurance, Dhipaya Insurance, Muang Thai Insurance, and Thai Vivat Insurance. Meanwhile, KTB is indirectly linked through Krungthai Panich Insurance, and BBL has indirect exposure through its roughly 9.99% stake in BKIH. ASL Securities sees this as positive for the insurance sector in terms of premium growth and expanding insurance penetration, and recommends gradually accumulating TIPH, KTB, and BBL, with TIPH the standout stock benefiting directly from the catastrophe insurance theme.

Floods in 25 Provinces Send Insurance Stocks Tumbling Across the Board on Claims Surge Fears

Insurance stocks fell across the board this morning amid concerns that flooding in Thailand will cause claim payouts to surge. As of 10:28 a.m., THRE dropped 6.56%, down 0.04 baht to 0.57 baht, with trading value of 8.88 million baht. TIPH fell 4.40 baht, down 1.10 baht to 23.90 baht, with trading value of 25.98 million baht. TVH declined 4.39%, down 0.50 baht to 10.90 baht, with trading value of 578,000 baht. BKIH slipped 0.52%, down 2.00 baht to 385.00 baht, with trading value of 6.77 million baht. Dao Securities (Thailand) said the flood situation in Thailand still requires close monitoring, after heavy to very heavy rain and water masses from the North flowing into the Central region caused flooding in 25 provinces covering 128 districts. Bangkok and its vicinity faced continuous heavy rain from September 25–27, 2026, causing flooding in many areas and affecting travel. Recently, rainfall has tended to decrease but repeated rain still needs monitoring, and drainage will take about 1–2 days. The government therefore declared special public holidays in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan on September 28–29 to mitigate the impact and reduce public travel. Dao Securities assessed that the short-term impact on the SET Index comes from negative sentiment toward economic activity, but expects the impact on operating results to remain limited. Meanwhile, insurance stocks, namely TIPH, TVH, MTI, BKI, and AYUD, have been affected by flood-related claim payouts.

BKIH Wins Best Insurance Company Award for 2026, Tightens Risk Controls on EVs and War-Zone Waters

BKI Holdings, or BKIH, has won the Best Company of the Year 2026 award in the insurance and life insurance category at the Money & Banking Awards 2026. Its subsidiary, Bangkok Insurance, was a key driver of this achievement. Dr. Apisit Anantanatarat, director and chairman of the executive board, revealed that the company continues to employ a cautious underwriting strategy for electric vehicles, as the loss ratio for EVs is high to very high due to standard service center costs and high battery values. Additionally, the company has a policy of excluding coverage in waters highly vulnerable to war risks, such as the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Strait of Hormuz, to cope with geopolitical tensions. If operators wish to purchase additional coverage, premium rates will be adjusted upward according to the actual risk level. Winning the award for the third consecutive year reflects management in line with ESG principles and the creation of sustainable growth.
BKIH.BK · Demand · Positive Won Best Insurance Company award, enhancing brand reputation and likely attracting customers.
BKIH.BK · Supply · Negative Tightens risk controls on EVs and war-zone waters, potentially limiting underwriting volume and increasing costs.
