AI Networking & Interconnect

Everyone talks about expensive GPUs. But here's the part people miss — training one AI takes tens of thousands of GPUs running at the same time, and every fraction of a second they have to "talk to each other" with enormous amounts of data. If the link between them is even a little slow, the most expensive GPUs in the world just sit there waiting. This lesson walks through the layer of cables and switches that ties a whole cluster of GPUs into one machine — and the hundred-billion-dollar fight between Nvidia and Broadcom that's heating up on top of it.

AI networking demand surges on hyperscaler capex; supply and competition risks build

  • Hyperscaler capex supercycle drives AI networking demand Goldman forecasts ~$755B hyperscaler spending in 2026, up 84% from 2024, and $5.3T through 2030. Broadcom's AI revenue hit $10.8B (+143%), Nvidia's networking revenue surged 199%, and Credo, Astera Labs, Marvell, and Cisco all posted strong growth.

This is the core demand driver behind the sector's boom, confirmed by company results.

  • Nvidia invests $2B each in Coherent, Lumentum, Marvell for optical Nvidia is investing $2B each in Coherent, Lumentum, and Marvell, plus a $5–10B telecom network project. This accelerates optical investment, crucial for faster data movement in AI networks.

It shows a major new capital commitment to optical technology, a key enabler for AI networking.

  • Supply constraints persist, especially indium-phosphide lasers Supply constraints persist, especially for indium-phosphide lasers, with Arista facing a 1–2 year crunch. This limits the ability to meet booming demand and could delay deployments.

It is a key counterweight to the positive demand story, highlighting a real bottleneck.

  • Nvidia's switching dominance and new competition pressure rivals Nvidia's switching dominance (192.7% growth) pressures Arista and Cisco, while new entrant Upscale AI ($500M) and Marvell's 102.4 Tbps switch intensify competition.

It shows competitive threats that could erode market share for incumbents.

AI networking demand broadens as Microsoft, Broadcom and optics suppliers lock in multi-year growth

  • Microsoft's 38GW data center plan triples AI interconnect footprint Microsoft reportedly plans to expand data center capacity to over 38 gigawatts by 2032, more than tripling its current footprint, with AI chips growing to roughly a third of that total. Dense GPU clusters at that scale require far more switches, fiber and optical links, locking in years of networking demand.

A massive multi-year capacity commitment directly expands the addressable market for AI networking and interconnect.

  • Broadcom, Arista, Credo and HPE post record AI networking results Broadcom guided Q4 to $34.8B and raised fiscal 2026 AI chip revenue to $58B, with $115B secured for 2027. Arista topped $3B quarterly revenue, Credo grew 115% and guided higher, and HPE hit a record on $3B+ networking orders. Broad demand is confirmed across switching, optics and systems.

Record results and raised guidance across the theme's core suppliers confirm demand is broad and accelerating.

  • New capital and orders fund the interconnect buildout Samsung and affiliates invested $1B in KKR's Helix AI infrastructure, which plans fiber-optic networks and connectivity. HPE won a $1.2B AMD Helios order from Vultr, Celestica eyes a 2027 1.6T networking ramp, and Amphenol orders jumped 94% with IT datacom up 89%.

Fresh capital and large orders show funding and demand are flowing into the physical interconnect layer.

  • China's Huawei-DeepSeek push and supply costs are the counterweights DeepSeek partnered with Huawei to build an alternative to Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem on Ascend chips, which could split supply chains and slow some networking demand. Meanwhile Arista's gross margin fell on tight supplies and rising component costs, a reminder that demand still strains supply and margins.

This is the real counterweight: a rival Chinese ecosystem and persistent supply-cost pressure that could cap the theme's upside.

AI networking demand surges on $2.4T capex, but valuation and supply risks build

  • Hyperscaler capex commitments hit $2.4T, 2026 spend near $830B Hyperscalers committed $2.4T to AI infrastructure, with 2026 spending near $830B and 2027 set to top $1T. This massive spending directly fuels demand for AI networking gear like switches and optical connections.

This is the core demand driver behind the quarter's AI networking strength.

  • Nvidia invests $13.5B in optical suppliers; Broadcom guides $230B AI revenue by 2028 Nvidia invested $5B, then $6.5B plus $2B in Coherent, to secure optical supply. Broadcom guided AI revenue to $230B by 2028. These moves show confidence and lock in critical components for faster AI networks.

Highlights major capital commitments and long-term revenue outlooks that underpin the sector's growth.

  • Broad-based strength: record results and multi-year deals across networking Lumentum, Marvell, Ciena, Arista and others posted record results. Multi-year deals like Verizon-Corning and Qualcomm-Amazon confirmed demand is broad, not just from a few hyperscalers. This signals a healthy, expanding market.

Shows the demand surge is widespread and supported by long-term contracts, reinforcing the positive trend.

  • Risks mount: stretched valuations, negative free cash flow, supply and policy threats Arista trades at 54x earnings and Ciena at 61x, while Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta have negative free cash flow. Debt-funded capex, a possible US ban on Chinese optical transceivers, component shortages, tariffs, and AI-slowdown selloffs threaten the rally.

Provides the essential counterweight, showing real risks that could derail the positive momentum.

Meta Unveils Petal Subsea Cable Linking US and France

Meta announced Petal on Sept. 21, a roughly 4,300-mile subsea cable connecting the U.S. and France that is expected to enter service in 2029 and will be the first to deliver petabit-scale capacity across an ocean. The cable will carry 1 petabit per second, or about 125,000 gigabytes per second, double what today's most advanced transoceanic cables can handle, using two-core fiber that fits two light paths inside each strand. Petal is one piece of a much larger seafloor empire: Meta says it has invested in more than 20 subsea cable projects touching every continent except Antarctica, led by Project Waterworth, announced in February 2025, which will stretch more than 31,000 miles and connect the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, India, and other regions across five continents. Petal is being developed with Japan's NEC and Sumitomo Electric Industries, with French telecom Orange handling the landing on France's Atlantic coast, while Waterworth will be wholly owned by Meta, only its third solely owned cable according to telecom research firm TeleGeography. Meta has not disclosed what Petal or Waterworth will cost, but TechCrunch reported before Waterworth's announcement that the project could top $10 billion, a small slice of the company's expected capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion this year, nearly double the $72.2 billion it spent in 2025.

Volantis Raises $88M Series A for Photonic AI Inference System

Volantis, a semiconductor company building a new category of AI inference system, announced an $88 million Series A co-led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, with participation from John Doerr, VXI Capital, Triatomic and Susa Ventures, plus angel investors Dwarkesh Patel, Naveen Rao and Sholto Douglas. The company's first system, A-1, is being designed to run models exceeding 20 trillion parameters at up to 10,000 tokens per second per user while reducing inference cost per token. Volantis says A-1 will increase memory capacity and bandwidth simultaneously by nearly two orders of magnitude, using a photonic interconnect that connects compute chips to memory and aggregates the bandwidth of large numbers of memory chips into a unified pool. The architecture uses custom micro-VCSELs rather than external lasers, drawing on the existing gallium arsenide VCSEL supply chain and avoiding indium phosphide supply constraints, with end-to-end links consuming less than one picojoule per bit. The financing will support development and commercialization of A-1 and its photonic memory architecture, including expanding the engineering team, and Volantis plans to deliver its first integrated inference engines to customers in 2027.

Samsung and affiliates invest $1 billion in KKR's Helix AI infrastructure

Samsung Electronics and five affiliated companies will invest a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, an artificial intelligence infrastructure company established by KKR, as the Samsung group expands from semiconductors into data centers, power systems and connectivity networks. Samsung Electronics will invest $500 million, while the remaining $500 million will come from Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, which are investing together. Helix launched in June with plans to develop infrastructure across the entire AI chain, from large-scale data centers and power generation to power transmission and distribution and fiber-optic networks, and is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services. The company says power availability is one of the key bottlenecks in AI infrastructure, and it plans to secure electricity through direct investment and partnerships with power project developers, including Vistra, a US energy company. KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and Vistra are also founding investors in Helix. The investment also opens the way for Samsung's various businesses to combine their expertise: Samsung Electronics supplies semiconductor solutions, while the Device eXperience business provides cooling equipment for data centers through FläktGroup, which Samsung acquired in 2025. Samsung C&T takes on data center and energy projects as an engineering, procurement and construction contractor, Samsung SDS designs and operates data centers and has entered the GPU-as-a-service market, and Samsung SDI provides uninterruptible power supply systems and backup battery systems for data centers, with plans to explore further business opportunities in the sector.

Nokia Shares Rise 3% After Google's €13 Billion Finland AI Investment

Nokia Oyj shares rose 3% to $10.98 on September 9 after Google announced a €13 billion investment to expand its AI infrastructure and cloud footprint in Hamina, Finland. Google said its Hamina site, part of a 43-region network, lets local entities like Nokia deliver high-performance, low-latency services and scale AI solutions, though the announcement is not a direct contract win for Nokia. In Q2 2026, Nokia recorded a 105% year-over-year surge in net sales to AI and Cloud customers, supported by €2.8 billion in AI and Cloud order intake, while its Network Infrastructure division grew 12%, led by a 20% jump in Optical Networks and a 16% rise in IP Networks. Nokia closed Q2 2026 with €2.8 billion in net cash and interest-bearing financial investments, but the quarter also brought a reported operating loss of €50 million, a negative 1.0% reported operating margin, and a 95% year-over-year decline in reported profit to €5 million. Management said supply remains the main industry constraint relative to strong demand, and Nokia must manage negative short-term free cash flow, restructuring costs, and optical supply limits to convert hyperscaler demand into sustainable earnings growth.

Nvidia Launches AI Agent Safety Platform, Shares Rise 3%

Nvidia launched a platform designed to keep autonomous AI agents within set limits, adding a security angle to its infrastructure business, and shares rose 3% to $231.88 at approximately 9:31 a.m. ET Monday. The platform gives companies two ways to stop an agent from going too far: OpenShell controls which files, networks and tools an agent can use, while Sentry runs separately on BlueField-4 hardware, watches for behavior outside those rules and can isolate the agent within milliseconds. Nvidia is pitching the combination across software, data centers and robotics. The investor case is that free security software could bring more customers into Nvidia's ecosystem and, over time, lift demand for its processors and networking hardware. Nvidia has given no separate revenue target for the platform, so investors still need evidence that adoption will turn into additional sales.

Microsoft Reportedly Plans Data Center Expansion to 38 Gigawatts by 2032

Microsoft plans to expand its global data center capacity to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032, more than tripling its current roughly 12-gigawatt footprint, according to Bloomberg News reporting cited by Reuters and attributed to people familiar with the plans. Only about 2 gigawatts of Microsoft's current capacity is dedicated to AI-specific chips, a share the company expects to grow to roughly one-third of the much larger 38-gigawatt total by 2032, though Microsoft has not confirmed the target in any public filing or statement. The reported roadmap rests on strong cloud demand: Azure and other cloud services revenue rose 43% year over year in fiscal Q4, Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion for the quarter and $214.4 billion for fiscal 2026, and commercial remaining performance obligations climbed 84% year over year to $678 billion, with roughly 30% expected to be recognized as revenue over the next 12 months. Funding the buildout will be costly, with Microsoft expecting more than $50 billion of capital expenditures in fiscal Q1 2027 and about $175 billion during calendar 2026 under its broader capex definition, after roughly $145 billion in fiscal 2026. Power and political hurdles could slow the plan, as Texas temporarily halted approvals for new data center grid connections and New York imposed a moratorium on large new data centers, even as Microsoft signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy tied to the restart of the 835-megawatt Three Mile Island Unit 1.

Credo Technology Adds 224G 1.6T Optical Transceivers to ZeroFlap Lineup

Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd has broadened its ZeroFlap optical transceiver offerings with a new 224G-based lineup targeting 1.6T port speeds for AI infrastructure. The new transceivers extend Credo's established 800G ZeroFlap reliability architecture to higher-speed 1.6T deployments across 2xDR4, 2xFR4, and DR8 form factors, and combine the company's 224G per lane optical DSP, its Kfir200 silicon photonics-based photonic integrated circuit, and its latest generation PILOT diagnostic and analytics platform. Credo is betting the lineup will capture a larger share of the AI data center interconnect segment, with experts projecting 1.6T optical transceiver shipments to expand through 2027. The company faces pricing pressure from rival optical transceiver and DSP providers chasing the same 1.6T opportunity, execution risk in scaling the integrated silicon photonics and DSP platform, and customer concentration, with its two largest customers accounting for 71% of fiscal Q1 2027 revenue. Institutional sentiment has strengthened, with 86 hedge funds holding positions by the end of Q2 2026 versus 59 in Q1 2026, while BlackRock is the largest institutional owner with 17.76 million shares, or 9.45% of outstanding shares, as of June 30.

Evercore ISI Upgrades Ciena to Outperform on AI Optical Demand

Evercore ISI upgraded Ciena Corporation to Outperform with a higher price target, citing the company's position as a dedicated optical systems provider for AI data centers. The upgrade came alongside a special call in which analysts highlighted Ciena's strong positioning in optical networking as artificial intelligence infrastructure expands across global data centers, and it was reinforced by upward earnings estimate revisions pointing to growing confidence that Ciena can capture rising demand for high-bandwidth AI connectivity. Ciena's narrative projects $11.1 billion in revenue and $1.8 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 25.8% yearly revenue growth and a $1.4 billion earnings increase from $438.3 million today, and yields a $551.86 fair value, a 55% upside to its current price. Some of the lowest ranked analysts were already assuming revenue of about US$10.3 billion and earnings of roughly US$1.5 billion by 2029, yet still see sharper risks from commoditization and hyperscaler bargaining power than the consensus does. The biggest risk remains Ciena's dependence on a small group of hyperscaler and telco customers, whose spending plans can shift quickly.

IOWN, the next-generation communications infrastructure using cutting-edge optical technology that NTT is researching and developing, is accelerating moves toward practical application. The technology replaces electrical signals with optical signals for information transmission and processing, achieving high capacity, low latency, and low power consumption, with full-scale adoption and social implementation targeted for around 2030. NTT Chief Executive Fellow and IOWN Global Forum Chairman Takehiko Kawazoe, who named the IOWN concept and heads the international promotion organization, pointed out that internet latency and the concentration of profits among a handful of giant IT companies create problems in fields such as autonomous driving, telemedicine, and national security, and expressed the view that 'AI sovereignty' must be protected through IOWN's characteristic ability to physically separate optical wavelengths by industry and by country. For broader adoption, the IOWN Global Forum, established in January 2020, now has nearly 175 member organizations, and NTT is pursuing collaboration with a diverse range of companies rather than going it alone. Kawazoe explained that the world's first invented optical transistor can theoretically operate on one-hundredth the energy of conventional technology, and even at the current stage can cut required energy to one-eighth, saying that delivering AI's value while curbing power consumption will lead to a sense of acceptance toward innovation.

Broadcom Sets $230 Billion AI Revenue Target for Fiscal 2028

Broadcom expects AI chip revenue of roughly $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028, according to Reuters, a target that doubles the delivery test for the custom AI chip and networking supplier. The company reported $16.7 billion in fiscal third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue, about 56% of its $29.59 billion total. Shares fell about 2% to $348.02 at 10.40am ET on Thursday morning as investors weighed the promise against execution risk. At that price, Broadcom trades 15.36% below the $411.18 GF Value cited by GuruFocus. Doubling AI sales in a year demands that chips be made, packaged and delivered on schedule, and any slip in supply or customer deployments would leave the revenue target offering little comfort.

Citi Stays Neutral on Fastly After 14% AI Surge, Backs Cloudflare Instead

Citi analyst Fatima Boolani remains neutral on Fastly, arguing the traffic boost from Meta's new AI assistant Muse will not translate into the profits needed to justify the stock's recent rally. Fastly shares fell 9% on Thursday, giving back part of the 14% surge they enjoyed on Wednesday after a Yahoo Finance report highlighted the company's role in powering Muse traffic. In a research note published Thursday, Boolani said Fastly charges customers per gigabyte of data transferred rather than per request, so the many small, quick requests generated by AI assistants earn the company far less than heavy streaming video traffic would. She also noted Fastly appears to be providing only basic, low-margin data delivery for Meta, with little evidence the company is selling its higher-margin security add-ons alongside that traffic. Citi instead prefers Cloudflare as the best way to invest in AI infrastructure, citing its more complete tool set and its head start in monetizing the AI boom, while competitor Akamai is seen as a mixed bag facing its own business hurdles. Boolani said Fastly's next earnings report will be the key test of whether its AI narrative turns into real revenue, and that a buy rating would require proof it can sell profitable security features alongside the Meta traffic and a surge in AI request volumes large enough to offset its unfavorable pricing structure.

Microsoft to invest 10 billion dollars in AI and cloud across Gulf states through 2030

Microsoft unveiled plans for a total investment of more than 10 billion US dollars across the Gulf states, namely the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait, spanning the period from now through 2030, aimed at expanding cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, alongside a digital resilience strategy to cope with uncertainty from regional war. Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft, told Reuters on Wednesday, September 23, that the funding reflects continued infrastructure building and expansion of operations in the Middle East, with the company proceeding with plans laid before the conflict and accelerating budget allocation more aggressively, alongside cooperation with Gulf state governments on crisis response and protection of critical data. The investment plan of more than 400 million US dollars to develop undersea cable networks and terrestrial networks across the Middle East region by 2030 is a sub-component of the total 10 billion US dollar investment plan. On the local partner front, Microsoft is also deepening cooperation with Abu Dhabi's G42, in which it acquired a minority stake worth 1.5 billion US dollars in 2024, which also brought Smith onto its board of directors, as well as working with Saudi Arabia's Humain and Qatar's Qai on major projects in each country, though there are no plans to inject joint investment funds into the latter two companies.
