Mega-cap Hyperscalers

Almost every app, website, and AI model you use runs on the machines of just three companies — Amazon (AWS), Microsoft (Azure), and Google Cloud. They're the "landlords" who rent out computing power to the whole world, and right now they're racing to invest at a scale business has never seen — nearly $725 billion in a single year — to build AI data centers fast enough to catch the biggest wave in tech history. This is the story of the oligopoly that props up the entire digital economy and all of AI.

Why is Mega-cap Hyperscalers moving?

Q2 2026
▲3▼1

AI spending boom lifts hyperscalers as new rivals and rules emerge

  • Record AI spending and cloud demand Hyperscalers are spending about $755B in 2026, up 84% from 2024. Cloud revenue and backlogs are surging (Google Cloud +63%, $462B backlog; Oracle $638B), showing demand still outruns supply.

It shows the core force behind the sector: massive AI-driven spending and demand.

  • Alphabet's record equity raise Alphabet raised a record $84.75B in equity, giving it huge firepower to fund AI expansion. This shows how aggressively hyperscalers are tapping markets to keep building.

It highlights a major new capital move that fuels the AI race.

  • New power deals ease energy limits Microsoft signed a 2.67GW gas plant deal, helping secure electricity for power-hungry AI data centers. Such deals reduce a key bottleneck for growth.

It addresses a critical supply constraint that could otherwise slow AI buildout.

  • Rising competition, costs, and regulation SpaceX and Meta are becoming well-funded cloud rivals, memory chip costs squeeze margins, and regulators loom (EU DMA probe, Google's €4.1B antitrust loss, tariff threats). Custom silicon helps margins but threatens Nvidia reliance.

It gives the real counterweight: risks that could pressure profits and growth.

Latest

AI demand stays hot, but debt, delays and war raise costs

  • Debt-funded buildout gets more expensive as yields hit 2007 highs Goldman Sachs went underweight hyperscaler AI debt, warning record issuance will reprice credit. Treasury yields hit their highest since 2007, raising borrowing costs for the $800B-$1.2T capex plans. Oracle's $18B Project Jupiter data-center debt traded at 89-91 cents on the dollar, and S&P already rates Oracle one notch above junk.

This is the main new counterweight: the AI buildout is increasingly funded by debt that is getting costlier and harder to sell.

  • Middle East war damages AWS and Oracle data centers Iranian drone strikes hit AWS data centers in Bahrain and the UAE and an Oracle facility in Dubai, the first known military disruption of American data centers. AWS still cannot restore one UAE zone months later. Microsoft's $15B UAE plan and the region's 13.8GW pipeline face delays and higher security costs.

A new geopolitical risk directly hits hyperscaler assets and future Middle East capacity plans.

  • AI demand commitments keep piling up for hyperscalers Anthropic's IPO filing shows $518B in cloud and infrastructure obligations, including $110B owed to AWS over a decade and 2.5GW of Nvidia capacity. Tencent leased 100,000 Oracle AI chips in Southeast Asia for about $7B. Barclays sees up to $30B upside to Nvidia's hyperscaler revenue, and Piper Sandler projects Google TPU sales of $104B by 2028.

These multi-year contracts are the core force behind hyperscaler revenue and show demand is still accelerating.

  • EU moves to regulate AWS and Azure under DMA The EU is set to designate AWS and Microsoft Azure under the Digital Markets Act as soon as November, which could force interoperability and limits on customer lock-ins. Google separately appealed a DMA order to share Gemini AI features and Search data with rivals. New rules could raise compliance costs and slow cloud growth in Europe.

Regulation is a fresh headwind that could change how the two biggest cloud providers operate in a key market.

Q3 2026
▲2▼2

AI demand booms, but cash burn and debt raise alarms

  • AI demand and cloud growth stay red-hot Nvidia's data-center revenue jumped 92%, cloud growth stayed strong (AWS 37%, Azure 43%, Google Cloud 82%), and backlogs ballooned (Oracle $664B, Azure $678B). Demand still outruns supply.

Shows the core force driving hyperscaler revenue and confidence this quarter.

  • Huge financing fuels expansion About $500B from Nvidia and Wall Street, plus record debt issuance, funded data-center buildouts. This shows how aggressively hyperscalers are tapping markets to keep building.

Explains the capital engine behind the AI expansion this quarter.

  • Cash flow turns negative as AI debt mounts Amazon and Alphabet turned cash-flow negative, AI-related debt neared $420B, and Nvidia's circular customer-lending model raised credit concerns. Goldman warned of repricing; Burry flagged $3T in off-balance-sheet commitments.

Highlights the key financial risk that emerged this quarter.

  • Power, costs, rules, and geopolitics squeeze Power constraints, memory costs, EU DMA scrutiny, a New York moratorium, and competition squeezed pricing. Middle East drone strikes damaged AWS and Oracle facilities, adding geopolitical risk.

Captures the mounting external pressures that could slow growth.

Alphabet Wins Two US Antitrust Cases, Backs AI Data Center Coalition

Alphabet reportedly won two separate US antitrust cases in late September, easing immediate legal pressure on Google. Google is helping form a cross industry coalition focused on AI data center development ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections, expected to address questions around power use, data sourcing and community impact from large scale AI computing hubs. The antitrust decisions support the view that Alphabet can keep rolling out AI powered features across Search, YouTube and Google Cloud without immediate structural remedies that break its distribution. The AI data center coalition cuts both ways, aligning with the potential to monetise AI infrastructure and long duration power contracts while spotlighting the risk that regulators and communities could still cap how far Alphabet can push energy hungry AI workloads. Analysts have already flagged regulatory pressure and high capital intensity as two of the biggest swing factors for the company.

Ellison's Oracle and Paramount Debt Binge Links Two Credits

Larry Ellison's dual role as backer of Paramount Skydance Corp. and controlling shareholder of Oracle Corp. is stirring concern on Wall Street as both companies pile on debt. Paramount took on $52 billion of additional debt this week to help pay for its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., while Oracle has nearly doubled its long-term debt to more than $160 billion over the past two years as it builds out AI computing capacity, making it the fifth-largest borrower in the US corporate bond market. The cost to insure the debt of both companies against default has converged and is increasingly moving in lock-step, a sign investors are beginning to treat the two credits as intertwined. Ellison, 82, is backstopping Paramount's takeover of Warner Bros., spearheaded by his son David, via a family trust that guaranteed a significant portion of the roughly $47 billion of equity financing for the deal, and the family pledged to take all necessary steps to bring leverage down in the coming years. His fortune has plummeted by almost $200 billion over the past year, though he is still worth roughly $192 billion, and he recently canceled a plan to sell billions of dollars worth of Oracle stock and disclosed he had increased the number of shares pledged as collateral for personal loans. S&P cut Oracle to BBB- in July and lowered Paramount's issuer credit rating to BB last month, and Oracle shares have fallen more than 50% over the past year.

Microsoft's $26.45 Billion Dividend Covered 2.5 Times by Fiscal 2026 Free Cash Flow

Microsoft generated $182.94 billion of fiscal 2026 operating cash flow and paid $115.95 billion for property and equipment, leaving $66.99 billion of simple free cash flow that covered its $26.45 billion annual dividend about 2.5 times. After dividends, roughly $40.54 billion remained before repurchases and other claims, and $22.27 billion of buybacks used part of that balance. In the fiscal fourth quarter, management reported $41 billion of capital expenditure including finance leases, compared with $35.8 billion of cash equipment spending, with the separately reported $5.6 billion finance-lease component creating future obligations rather than immediate cash outlays. Holding operating cash flow at $182.94 billion, an additional $20 billion of cash equipment spending would cut simple free cash flow to $46.99 billion and still leave roughly 1.8 times dividend coverage, while an additional $40 billion would leave $26.99 billion, close to the dividend bill before buybacks. At September 30's approximate $3.81 trillion market capitalization, the payout was less than 1% of equity value, and fiscal 2026 simple free cash flow implies approximately 57 times free cash flow. Insider Monkey's hedge fund database showed 273 Microsoft holders in Q2 2026, compared with 282 in Q1, with Fisher Asset Management increasing its share position 3% to 26,611,728.

Anthropic Owes Amazon $110 Billion in Cloud Deal, Draft IPO Filing Shows

Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus shows roughly $110 billion owed to Amazon Web Services over about the next decade, part of $518 billion in total cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations the AI company has planned. Amazon's share traces back to a pledge of more than $100 billion over 10 years and, like most of that total, is owed even if Anthropic's usage falls short, giving Amazon revenue visibility that ordinary pay-as-you-go cloud usage does not. Spread evenly, the AWS portion runs above $10 billion a year, while Anthropic reportedly spent $7.33 billion on all of its suppliers combined in 2025. Amazon has also invested $18 billion in Anthropic through convertible notes and nonvoting preferred stock, with up to $15 billion more available, and those holdings are now carried at about $190 billion, up from about $61 billion at the end of 2025. Second-quarter net income more than tripled to $62.6 billion, with $53.4 billion of pre-tax, non-operating income coming mostly from the Anthropic investments. Separately, Synopsys and AWS announced a multi-year deal worth more than $1 billion under which Amazon's cloud unit will license chip design blueprints, and AWS now offers Claude Sonnet 5.5 through Amazon Bedrock.

EU Set to Place AWS and Microsoft Azure Under Digital Markets Act

Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure are expected to be designated under the European Union's Digital Markets Act, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the situation. EU regulators are preparing to release the results of an investigation into whether the cloud businesses meet the criteria to fall under the DMA, and sources indicated they do qualify, with a final decision set for issuance as soon as November. A statement from the European Commission said no final decision has been taken. If Azure and AWS receive the designation, they might have to meet new interoperability requirements and place protections against customer lock-ins or self-preferencing. The EU has previously fined Apple, Google and Meta, with Google's fine earlier this year the most substantial at about $1B, and U.S. President Donald Trump said in July the U.S. will launch a formal investigation into the EU's trade practices, specifically targeting the DMA.

Microsoft Joins New US Tech Coalition on AI Data Center Impacts

Microsoft and other large US tech firms have formed a new coalition focused on the environmental, energy grid, and local community impacts of AI data center buildouts across the United States. Member companies are preparing shared sustainability and job creation commitments ahead of key US political events. The group is meant to address local pushback on power use, water consumption, and grid stress that has become a real friction point for large AI facilities, and Microsoft is using it to protect its license to keep building the AI infrastructure its cloud and Copilot products rely on. Microsoft, a US software heavyweight with a US$3.8 trillion market cap, faces a key checkpoint in how it breaks out AI driven data center costs and Azure usage under its new FY27 reporting structure, with the first segment numbers due under Agents and Infra. The coalition lines up with an existing risk around heavy AI and cloud investment that raises financial and execution pressure, and coordinated work on permitting, grid access, and environmental rules may help manage that capital intensity without removing the exposure to very large, long dated infrastructure bets.

Google Cloud's $8.81 Billion Quarterly Profit Anchors Alphabet Sum-of-Parts Valuation

Google Cloud generated $24.77 billion of second-quarter revenue and $8.81 billion of operating income, an approximately 35.6% margin, with revenue growing 82% from a year earlier, according to an Insider Monkey analysis of Alphabet's valuation. Annualizing that quarter gives $35.26 billion of operating profit, which the analysis treats as a recent pace rather than a full-year forecast. At hypothetical multiples of 20, 30 and 40 times that operating-profit pace, Cloud would account for about $705 billion, $1.06 trillion and $1.41 trillion of enterprise value, leaving approximately $3.39 trillion, $3.03 trillion and $2.68 trillion of Alphabet's $4.09 trillion enterprise value for the remaining businesses, corporate costs and nonoperating assets. Alphabet's consolidated second-quarter operating income was $40.77 billion; removing Cloud's $8.81 billion leaves $31.96 billion, or a mechanically annualized $127.82 billion, implying roughly 26.5, 23.7 and 21 times that residual operating-profit pace before a separate investment-asset adjustment. The analysis warns that a lower Cloud margin changes the calculation quickly: at the same $24.77 billion quarterly revenue, a 25% margin would generate about $6.19 billion of quarterly operating profit, or $24.77 billion annualized, and at 30 times would imply about $743 billion of Cloud value, roughly $315 billion below the 35.6%-margin scenario and almost 8% of Alphabet's current enterprise value.

Oracle Shares Reverse Lower After Reported $7 Billion Tencent Data Center Lease

Oracle shares reversed an early gain and turned lower Thursday after the Financial Times reported that Tencent Holdings had locked in a five-year lease spanning several Oracle data centers across Southeast Asia. Under the reported terms, Tencent would gain access to about 100,000 cutting-edge AI chips it otherwise can't obtain inside China, with the arrangement said to be worth roughly $7 billion and close to a third of that due upfront. Neither company responded when asked to confirm the details. Oracle stock had jumped nearly 2% before Thursday's opening bell on the report, but the shares gave up that advance amid overall market weakness and were down 0.82% at $136.18 at the time of publication. The deal reflects a broader scramble among Chinese tech firms for overseas computing capacity as domestic chip supply stays tight and U.S. export restrictions persist.

Barclays Sees Up to $30 Billion Upside in Nvidia Hyperscaler Revenue

Barclays said fresh data shared by Nvidia points to at least $30 billion of potential upside to the chipmaker's revenue from the top five cloud providers in both 2026 and 2027. Analyst Tom O'Malley noted that Nvidia disclosed its share of IT capital spending across the five largest cloud service providers in recent years, through the second quarter of 2026, along with an estimate of 44% for 2027. Using Barclays' internet team's assumption that cloud capital spending reaches about $1.1 trillion by 2027, with 80% going to IT, O'Malley calculated hyperscaler revenue of $237 billion in 2026 and $401 billion in 2027, above Barclays' current forecasts of $206 billion and $370 billion. In an upside scenario where historical ratios hold, he sees revenue reaching $246 billion and $417 billion in those years. O'Malley also noted that Nvidia's hyperscaler revenue includes SpaceX while the top five cloud provider figure does not, implying an even larger total, and said sentiment on the name can continue to improve amid solid numbers upside, increased buybacks and the Hugging Face acquisition.

Warren Demands Answers From Big Tech on $96B in Lost Federal Tax Revenue

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and fellow lawmakers sent letters this week to the CEOs of Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft demanding details on their tax breaks and their lobbying for incentives in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Warren pointed to Amazon, which paid $7.8 billion less in tax last year, while Meta received nearly $7 billion in tax relief in 2025, paying $2.8 billion in federal tax compared to $9.6 billion in 2024. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, Microsoft and Alphabet each qualified for tax cuts of nearly $19 billion last year. The breaks stem largely from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's 100% bonus depreciation, which lets companies write off qualifying capital investments such as AI data centers in their first year; Microsoft claimed nearly $12 billion in depreciation tax breaks, Amazon $6.5 billion, Meta $4.9 billion and Alphabet over $3.3 billion. Corporate tax revenues are down 23% this year, amounting to $96 billion in lost federal revenue, according to Politico, as federal debt has topped $40 trillion. Warren and her colleagues want data centers disqualified from bonus depreciation tax breaks, while White House spokesperson Kush Desai said the law's pro-growth provisions were driving historic job, investment and wage growth.

Oracle Unveils Fusion Claw Governed Agentic Runtime Powering 25 New AI Enterprise Apps

Oracle unveiled Fusion Claw, a governed agentic execution runtime that powers 25 new AI-driven enterprise applications along with new financial-crime compliance tools designed to automate complex workflows while preserving tight governance and auditability. The launch, disclosed in late September 2026, highlights Oracle's push to blend AI reasoning with deterministic enterprise computation, aiming to make "systems of outcomes" a core layer of its business software rather than just adding AI features at the edges. Fusion Claw is Oracle's attempt to turn AI into governed, auditable systems embedded in core ERP, finance, HR, and compliance workflows, strengthening the product story behind its aggressive pivot into AI infrastructure and agentic applications. Near-term catalysts remain OCI growth, conversion of Oracle's very large cloud backlog, and evidence that AI-driven Fusion apps can deepen wallet share, though the stock's sharp pullback and recent concerns around Project Jupiter and Wisconsin power delays have made funding, execution, and balance sheet risk more central to the narrative. Twenty Simply Wall St Community members see Oracle's fair value anywhere from about US$125 to nearly US$390, a spread that sits alongside mounting concerns about AI data center delays and funding.

Alibaba's AI Spending Ramps Up as Cloud Revenue Jumps 45%

Alibaba ramped up its artificial intelligence spending sharply in the June 2026 quarter, reporting RMB67.7 billion in capital expenditures, up 75% year over year, driven by AI infrastructure, higher CPU-compute capacity and rising chip-component prices. The outlay is part of a RMB380 billion three-year capital investment plan, of which RMB190 billion had already been spent by the end of the June quarter. The spending weighed on cash generation, with free cash flow deepening to an outflow of RMB44.7 billion from an RMB18.8 billion outflow a year earlier, while adjusted EBITA fell 30% and net income declined 75%. Early monetization offered an offset, as AI Cloud and Compute Services revenues rose 45% to RMB48.4 billion and adjusted EBITA for that business jumped 133% to RMB5.6 billion, and Alibaba expects AI-related capital expenditure to break even in roughly three years. The company carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell), and the Zacks Consensus Estimate for its fiscal 2027 EPS stands at $6.41, down from estimates issued 30 and 60 days ago but still implying 64.78% growth from the prior year.

Morgan Stanley Sees 50% Oracle Upside But Keeps Equal Weight

Morgan Stanley sees roughly 50% upside in Oracle shares but is not recommending investors buy them, with analyst Sanjit Singh maintaining an Equal Weight rating and a $210 price target. The central concern is what Oracle gets back from its massive AI infrastructure spending, even as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure revenue rose 121% year over year in the fiscal first quarter. Singh said he wants to see further gross margin stabilization, though he noted promising signs including greater OCI capacity, higher renewal pricing and increasing profits, and he liked the company's reaffirmed annual capital expenditure projection of $90 billion to $95 billion. Oracle's financial analyst day on Oct. 28 is the next key driver, which Singh called a good starting point to see whether Oracle can clarify infrastructure deployment, profitability and application patterns. By contrast, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore keeps an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $505 price target, believing it will eventually capture more than 80% of serviceable markets with its custom-chip projects, even though he thinks 2027 AI revenue forecasts are too high.

NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS Migrates Database Platform to Oracle Cloud, Cuts License Costs 43 Percent

NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS, Inc., formerly NTT Communications Corporation, has migrated its shared internal Oracle-based database platform to Oracle Autonomous AI Database on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, moving tens of terabytes of data off its on-premises environment and cutting database license costs by 43 percent. The shared platform hosts critical internal systems including network management, security, and service operations, and currently supports 12 critical internal systems connected to approximately 400 servers. Akihiro Ito, senior vice president of the Integrated Service Operations Division at NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS, said the flexible consumption model delivered the 43 percent license-cost reduction versus on-premises, while automation of patching, backups, and routine maintenance has significantly reduced day-to-day administrative work. To strengthen business continuity, the company implemented a disaster recovery architecture across two Oracle Cloud regions in Japan, which it says supports stable operations and faster recovery from disruptions. The company added that automated backups, patching, and maintenance have cut the time and effort needed to address security vulnerabilities and enabled faster responses to AI-enabled cyberattacks and emerging vulnerabilities.

That facility is a critical component of the broader Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure build-out, and the $18 billion in debt tied to the data center is already trading at stressed levels, though Oracle told CNBC that Project Jupiter remains on schedule and that it is fully committed to New Mexico.

Jefferies Reiterates Buy on Microsoft, Sees Copilot Expanding Enterprise AI Spend

Jefferies analyst Brent Thill reiterated a Buy rating and $575 price target on Microsoft, calling the company's revamped Copilot incrementally positive and supportive of the firm's Microsoft 365 thesis. The biggest change, according to Jefferies, is that Microsoft is pushing Copilot beyond simple AI assistance toward software that can perform longer, more complex work, with new features such as Cowork, Code and Autopilot potentially increasing both the number of tasks Copilot handles and how frequently customers pay for AI usage. Thill said Cowork bridges AI assistance to delegated, end-to-end work, while Autopilot extends this into proactive, persistent and recurring execution, a shift Jefferies believes could make AI consumption more tangible across Microsoft 365. Thill also compared the new Copilot app with Meta Platforms' Muse, arguing Microsoft may hold an important enterprise advantage because its AI tools are grounded in proprietary corporate data and workflows, and because it controls a much broader enterprise technology stack spanning productivity, collaboration, cloud infrastructure, data, identity, security, governance and compliance. Jefferies cautioned that better AI capabilities do not automatically guarantee stronger consumption, as enterprises closely monitor AI budgets and increasingly demand clear returns before expanding spending, meaning adoption could remain gradual; the key metric for investors will be whether these new agentic capabilities move from demonstrations into recurring production workflows.

NetApp and Oracle to Launch Fully Managed Cloud Storage Service on OCI

NetApp and Oracle announced a new fully managed storage service that brings enterprise-grade NetApp storage natively to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The service, called Oracle Cloud Infrastructure NetApp Storage Service, will bring NetApp ONTAP data management capabilities natively to OCI to help organizations simplify migration and management of critical AI and enterprise workloads in the cloud. It is designed to help enterprises migrate, run, protect, and modernize databases, enterprise applications, virtualized environments, EDA/HPC, regulated applications, and AI data pipelines while preserving familiar storage operations, and customers can manage it through the OCI Console and SDKs, ONTAP APIs, and familiar operational workflows. Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage and Services at NetApp, said customers want the flexibility to move AI and enterprise workloads to the cloud without giving up operational simplicity, data management, and reliability, while Konstantinos Papamiltiadis, Senior Vice President of Partnerships at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said enterprises shouldn't have to rebuild their data infrastructure to move to the cloud. Alvaro Celis, Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial, Partner and Ecosystem Officer at NetApp, said the partnership combines OCI's scale and performance with NetApp's enterprise data capabilities to help customers run mission-critical workloads, especially in regulated industries. OCI NetApp Storage Service is planned for general availability within the next 12 months.

Microsoft Expands Copilot Into Paid Workflow Super-App as Shares Slip 1.2%

Microsoft is pushing Copilot toward a single hub for AI work, folding three functions into one product, though shares fell about 1.2% to $503.32 around 10:10 a.m. ET Tuesday. The redesigned Copilot puts three jobs under one roof: Home helps people pick up work across their apps, Code turns instructions into software, and Autopilot handles longer-running tasks. As Reuters reported, Microsoft is moving Autopilot into private preview at the end of September. The stock's Friday rally on the announcement has given way to a tougher question of whether customers will pay enough for AI agents to make the extra computing costs worthwhile, with more paid use across Microsoft 365 and Azure needing to translate into profit after inference and support costs. The share price sits 14.47% below GuruFocus's $588.50 GF Value estimate.

Amazon's Bedrock Adds OpenAI GPT-6 Sol and Luna, Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5

Amazon expanded the model lineup on its Bedrock AI platform, adding OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and Luna alongside Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 as part of its September 28 AWS roundup. AWS also introduced CloudWatch Omni to monitor applications and AI agents, while its SageMaker HyperPod gateway can cut first-token latency by up to 82% in the mixed-hardware and bursty scenarios AWS tested. Shares of Amazon fell about 0.28% to $245.46 in Tuesday morning trading, a level roughly 1.7% below the $249.70 GF Value estimate. The launches give developers more ways to run AI on AWS, but investors are still waiting to see how much revenue that activity brings in, since cheaper models may drive more AI calls, computing and storage demand while earning less per call.

Google files EU court appeal against order to share AI and search data with rivals

Google appealed to the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg on Monday, September 28, to contest an order requiring the company to give rivals access to its artificial intelligence features and to share data from Google Search with other search engine providers. Earlier, the European Commission issued an order under the Digital Markets Act in July requiring Google to open services used with its Gemini AI model to other developers, including OpenAI, and to share data from Google Search with competing search engine providers. The order is due to take effect next year. Oliver Bethell, Google's senior director for competition, said the order could force the company to share users' personal search histories with insufficient anonymisation measures and could weaken security measures on Android devices. The European Commission confirmed that both measures include strict safeguards to protect user privacy, device integrity and security. Meanwhile, DuckDuckGo, the US technology company that offers a search engine focused on privacy protection, came out in support of the European Commission, stating that the EU's anonymisation framework has robust measures and that Google's appeal is merely a delay of enforcement of the order.

Alibaba Nears Chinese Approval to Buy Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 Chips

Alibaba Group Holding is expected to secure Chinese approval to purchase Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 chips under current export rules. Regulators in Beijing are reviewing the RTX PRO 5500 orders as a category of AI hardware seen as compliant with US curbs. The prospective approval would expand Alibaba's pool of Nvidia processors for use in its cloud services and in-house AI projects, supporting the company's RMB 380 billion AI and cloud buildout over three years alongside its Zhenwu V900 chips. The likely green light comes as Alibaba competes with Tencent and Huawei to serve enterprise AI workloads at scale, while analysts warn that relying on both in-house accelerators and imported Nvidia gear could keep capital intensity high and leave profitability under strain if usage lags capacity.

Crusoe Confirms It Is Developing Google Data Center Campus in Armstrong County, Texas

Crusoe announced it is the developer of Google's data center campus under construction in Armstrong County outside of Amarillo, Texas. The campus is engineered to provide capacity to power advanced AI and has a direct connection to Serena's adjacent Goodnight 1 wind farm, which at 265.5 MW is operational, and the Goodnight 2 wind farm, also 265.5 MW, which is under construction and was catalyzed by Crusoe's development at the site. When wind generation exceeds campus demand, surplus power is supplied back to the grid, benefiting local ratepayers and reducing curtailment of West Texas wind energy. Construction broke ground in June 2025 and is underway with more than 5,500 skilled laborers on-site daily, and the project will use a closed-loop, non-evaporative liquid cooling system designed to limit its water footprint primarily to domestic uses such as kitchens. The campus is part of Crusoe's growing West Texas portfolio, which includes two campuses under development in Abilene.

Nokia Shares Rise 3% After Google's €13 Billion Finland AI Investment

Nokia Oyj shares rose 3% to $10.98 on September 9 after Google announced a €13 billion investment to expand its AI infrastructure and cloud footprint in Hamina, Finland. Google said its Hamina site, part of a 43-region network, lets local entities like Nokia deliver high-performance, low-latency services and scale AI solutions, though the announcement is not a direct contract win for Nokia. In Q2 2026, Nokia recorded a 105% year-over-year surge in net sales to AI and Cloud customers, supported by €2.8 billion in AI and Cloud order intake, while its Network Infrastructure division grew 12%, led by a 20% jump in Optical Networks and a 16% rise in IP Networks. Nokia closed Q2 2026 with €2.8 billion in net cash and interest-bearing financial investments, but the quarter also brought a reported operating loss of €50 million, a negative 1.0% reported operating margin, and a 95% year-over-year decline in reported profit to €5 million. Management said supply remains the main industry constraint relative to strong demand, and Nokia must manage negative short-term free cash flow, restructuring costs, and optical supply limits to convert hyperscaler demand into sustainable earnings growth.

Oracle's Project Jupiter 26% Complete as Stifel Reiterates Buy Rating

Stifel estimates Oracle's 2.5-gigawatt Project Jupiter AI data center campus is approximately 26% complete, with its associated microgrid about 10% complete, and has reiterated its Buy rating and $200 price target on Oracle stock. The firm views a force majeure notice involving the Blue Owl unit working on the project as a precautionary measure to preserve contractual rights rather than evidence of cancellation, though Oracle shares fell about 3% after the notice appeared amid regulatory and air-quality permitting challenges and permitting setbacks for the pipeline expected to supply the project's power system. Oracle's first-quarter fiscal 2027 results showed Cloud Infrastructure revenue up 121% year over year, more than $30 billion in AI-related contracts signed, and remaining performance obligations of approximately $664 billion. The company generated approximately $32 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2026 but posted negative free cash flow of $23.7 billion as it continued investing in cloud growth. Hedge fund interest strengthened, with 119 funds holding Oracle shares in the second quarter versus 115 in the first, while short interest rose to approximately 50.84 million shares as of September 15 from 47.77 million as of August 14, about 2.73% of the float.

Meta Plans C$13 Billion Alberta Data Center, Its First in Canada

Meta Platforms is planning a C$13 billion data center in Alberta, its first in Canada, a 1-gigawatt facility that could eventually scale to 1.8 gigawatts to support its growing AI operations. Capital Power will initially supply 250 megawatts, while Meta has a long-term agreement with Pembina Pipeline's planned natural gas-fired Greenlight Electricity Centre, expected to enter service in late 2030. Capital Power CEO Avik Dey told Reuters that several other prospective data-center developers are discussing electricity supply with the company, and he expects more U.S. hyperscalers to eventually build large facilities in Alberta, where more than 100 data-center projects have been proposed. Meta's second-quarter revenue rose 28% year over year to $60.8 billion, while advertising revenue grew 27%, but capital expenditures reached $31.08 billion in the quarter alone and the company now expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capex for 2026, leaving free cash flow at just $784 million versus $8.55 billion a year earlier. A Pembina Institute report cited by Reuters warned that letting data centers use Alberta's grid before their own generating capacity is operating could strain supply and raise consumer costs, and a July Angus Reid poll found 68% of Canadians would oppose a large data center near their home.

Alibaba Unveils 10-Trillion-Parameter AI Model and Zhenwu V900 Chip

Alibaba Group laid out plans for a five trillion to ten trillion parameter model and a new Zhenwu V900 chip at its September 22 conference. The V900 delivers three times the performance of its predecessor and can power clusters of up to 500,000 chips, while CEO Eddie Wu set a target for Alibaba Cloud to operate more than 20 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2032. Reuters reported that the announcement lifted Alibaba shares on September 22, but the U.S. shares slipped about 0.1% to $109.63 at 11.10am ET on September 28, showing that early excitement has since cooled. The investment case rests on turning that computing scale into paying cloud demand, since building its own models and chips could give Alibaba more control over costs but a 20 gigawatt buildout raises the stakes for spending and utilization. The shares sit $11.86 below the $121.49 GF Value estimate, a 9.76% gap that will matter only if the expansion earns an adequate return.

Oracle Invokes Force Majeure on Multibillion Dollar Project Jupiter Data Center

Oracle has invoked force majeure on its multibillion dollar Project Jupiter data center, citing permitting delays. The force majeure notice affects a single large-scale Project Jupiter site that underpins part of Oracle's AI and cloud buildout, one of the physical anchors for the company's AI backlog. Bondholders tied to Project Jupiter financing are assessing how the delay could influence risk assumptions for Oracle's future capital projects. Oracle reaffirmed that its spending plans remain intact, supporting its intent to convert its very large remaining performance obligations into usage rather than trimming its AI ambition to ease CapEx pressure. The deeper concern is whether a series of such execution issues, combined with already high debt and non-cash earnings, could leave Oracle with underutilised assets and weaker free cash flow if AI consumption proves lumpier than expected.

IREN Falls 3% as Jones Trading Starts Coverage With Hold Rating

IREN Limited fell 3% in premarket trade after Jones Trading launched coverage with a Hold recommendation, citing obstacles to the AI cloud company's growth story despite robust computer capacity demand. Analyst Kevin Dede called IREN "polarizing," pointing to its vast customer base and its only investment-grade customer, Microsoft. The cautious call comes despite IREN winning major AI business this year, including a $3.4 billion cloud services contract and a $2.1 billion share repurchase arrangement with Nvidia in May for up to $5.5 billion. Dede estimates that 45% of IREN's shares are held by retail investors, and he criticized the board's June grants of 9.1 million restricted stock units apiece to co-founders and co-CEOs William and Daniel Roberts, calling them "lavish stock award." Other Wall Street experts are more hopeful: according to TipRanks, IREN has eight Buy and three Hold recommendations in the past three months, with an average analyst price estimate of $76, 72% higher than its report price.

Sir Martin Sorrell Says AI Reshapes Advertising as Four Platforms Dominate

Sir Martin Sorrell, founder and executive chairman of S4Capital, told Yahoo Finance that AI's real impact on advertising lies in media planning and buying rather than creative, and that the market is increasingly concentrated among a handful of platforms. Digital now accounts for 75% of total advertising spend of 1.2 trillion, Sorrell said, and this year spend will be about 1.35 trillion, with digital crossing 1 trillion for the first time. He put Google at 350 billion, Meta at 250 billion, Amazon at around 80-85 billion of ad revenues, and TikTok outside China at about 60 billion, meaning those four platforms alone are more than half the market and more than two-thirds of digital, a segment growing by 15 to 20%. Sorrell said the top four hyperscalers — Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta and Amazon — are each going to spend a trillion dollars a year for the next five years, at least 5 trillion in total, and that this year going into Q2 the anticipated CAPEX by those four hyperscalers was about 630 million, rising after Q2 to about 830, with next year's forecast at 1.1 trillion, of which they will have to find 530 billion in debt. He noted that Q2 was the first quarter in which Meta and Google went cash flow negative, creating a very different, more leveraged and capital-heavy world in which the hyperscalers are spending to entrench their positions.

Piper Sandler Projects Google TPU Sales to Reach $104 Billion by 2028

Piper Sandler analyst Thomas Champion is projecting that Google's newly disclosed external chip business will generate $104 billion in TPU hardware revenue by 2028, a forecast the firm says the broader Street has yet to price in. Champion published the note after Google disclosed external hardware sales for the first time in its second-quarter 2026 earnings report, a milestone that triggered a formal reassessment of the revenue opportunity. The firm's model has TPU sales climbing from approximately $8 billion in 2026, or roughly 240,000 chips, to $51 billion in 2027, or approximately 2.4 million chips, and then to $104 billion in 2028, anchored to a facilities and power-capacity build-out of 3 gigawatts of run-rate capacity by the end of 2027 and 6GW by the end of 2028. Piper Sandler raised its price target on Alphabet to $400 from $395 and reiterated its Overweight rating, with its 2027 and 2028 Cloud revenue estimates now 15% and 17% above consensus and its Cloud EBIT estimates 18-19% above consensus. Champion also flagged that even these estimates may prove conservative, noting that Broadcom management recently spoke to 5GW of Anthropic demand in 2027 and 10GW in 2028, which Piper Sandler estimates as $105 billion and $210 billion in revenue if that capacity is achieved.
